Union Min to inaugurate BIMSTEC ports conclave in Vizag today
Focusing on the theme 'navigating the future: blue economy, innovation and sustainable partnerships', the two-day conclave will bring together ministerial delegations, port authorities, maritime experts, and business leaders from BIMSTEC member countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand on to a platform.
The conclave will be inaugurated by Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal. The Union Minister will inaugurate several developmental projects at Visakhapatnam Port and lay the foundation stone for ensuing infrastructure works in the presence of Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur and chairperson of VPA M. Angamuthu, among others.
BIMSTEC plays a pivotal role in creating a prosperous, secure and resilient Indo-Pacific in line with India's Act East Policy, Neighbourhood First, and SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision.
As part of the BIMSTEC Ports conclave's first edition, the theme centred on 'the blue seas synergy summit'. The second edition to focus on unlocking private investment and infrastructure partnerships across BIMSTEC ports, including fast-tracking of Kaladan Multimodal Transit Corridor and associated logistics networks, identifying and promoting coastal tourism circuits and heritage cruise lines, upskilling port workforce and developing future-ready talent pools, advancing the Blue Economy through green energy adoption, sustainable logistics, and digital transformation. Aligned with Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, the conclave will feature deliberations on Harit Sagar (green ports) and shore-to-ship power supply and green hydrogen integration and decarbonisation pathways, smart logistics corridors, SEZs, and port-linked industrialisation.
Ministers of Transport and Ports from BIMSTEC countries, senior officials from Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, delegates from shipping corporations, port trusts, logistics companies and experts from UNESCAP, ADB, BIMSTEC Secretariat, and international think tanks to participate in the conclave.

India has "always stood" by its partners in the region as the first responder in times of crisis, and the BIMSTEC disaster management exercise further strengthened cooperation in the Bay of Bengal region towards disaster preparedness, response and resilience, the MEA said on Wednesday. India hosted the 4th BIMSTEC Disaster Management Exercise virtually on July 14-15. The exercise organised by the National Disaster Management Authority, as a tabletop exercise, witnessed the participation of disaster management professionals from BIMSTEC Member States to assess and enhance regional preparedness for cyclones and floods. "The participants presented details of national disaster management architectures, engaged in simulated scenarios, evaluated response frameworks and shared best practices to strengthen coordination for disaster response across the region," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement. "India has always stood by its partners in the region as the first responder in times of crisis. The Exercise further strengthened cooperation in the Bay of Bengal region towards disaster preparedness, response and resilience," it said. India also hosted the 2nd BIMSTEC Ports Conclave in Visakhapatnam on July 14-15. The theme of the conclave was 'Navigating the Future: Blue Economy, Innovation and Sustainable Partnerships'. The conclave was inaugurated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and saw participation of delegations of the BIMSTEC member States, comprising officials, maritime experts, port authorities, private sector leaders, and regional development partners. "The Conclave discussed diverse issues such as harmonising customs procedures and enhancing logistical links to boost intra-regional trade, port-linked industrial zones, cruise tourism, digital integration, upskilling maritime workforce, industry-academia ties, green shipping," the MEA said in another statement on Wednesday. This initiative by India, in line with its Neighbourhood First policy, will "further strengthen maritime cooperation in the Bay of Bengal region," it said. The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional organisation that was established in 1997 with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration. Initially known as BIST-EC (Bangladesh-India-Sri Lanka-Thailand Economic Cooperation), the organisation is now known as BIMSTEC, comprises seven Member States with the admission of Myanmar later in 1997, and Bhutan and Nepal in 2004.

The session focused on the need to streamline customs procedures, eliminate regulatory bottlenecks, and address gaps in logistics infrastructure to facilitate seamless cargo movement and regional port efficiency. The following session highlighted the vast potential for cruise tourism in the BIMSTEC region, enriched by vibrant coastal ecosystems, rich cultural heritage, and diverse marine biodiversity. The platform focused on strategising future roadmaps for BIMSTEC port collaboration, synthesising insights from earlier sessions and outlining long-term frameworks for sustainable and efficient port development aligned with global standards and innovation goals. The final technical session of the day emphasised the importance of upskilling the maritime workforce, stressing public-private partnerships in maritime education, shipyard development, and port management to foster a competitive and future-ready talent pool. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal visited Hindustan Shipyard Limited and later reviewed Dredging Corporation issues along with VPA chairperson M. Angamuthu.
