All-new Mitsubishi Pajero caught testing overseas: Can it challenge the Toyota Fortuner?

The next generation of the Mitsubishi Pajero has been spotted testing in Southern Europe. (autoevolution) Notify me
The Mitsubishi Pajero was one of the most iconic nameplates in the full-size SUV space, and it appears to be making a comeback after being discontinued for nearly half a decade. A heavily camouflaged test mule has been spotted on the roads in Southern Europe, and it is expected to bring back the moniker in a revamped package with an updated design, fresh interiors, and several powertrain options.
Mitsubishi introduced the Pajero to the Indian market around 2002 as part of a joint venture with Hindustan Motors, which was responsible for its assembly on our shores. In 2012, the joint venture brought in the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, a mid-size version of the SUV. Despite its popularity among enthusiasts, Mitsubishi discontinued the ladder-frame SUV in India in 2020 due to increasingly stringent emissions regulations. In 2021, the Pajero was taken off the global market altogether.

The Japanese manufacturer is now gearing up to roll out the next-gen Pajero, and it will likely arrive in India, taking up competition with the Toyota Fortuner. The test mule seems to be nearly production-ready, and the final model is expected to debut before the end of 2025. Mitsubishi Pajero: Design The next-gen Pajero retains the characteristic boxy profile with a tall stance and an upright front end.
The next-gen Pajero retains its boxy silhouette from the previous models while carrying forward a range of exterior design tweaks. The latest spy shots showcase a tall stance with an upright front end that features vertically stacked LED DRLs flanking a wide grille. The SUV further features a large skid plate, a clamshell bonnet design, and updated bumpers.
The new Pajero will ride on a revamped set of alloys, which are likely to be 19-inch or 20-inch options. The rear end is reminiscent of the Nissan Patrol with a slim, rectangular rear window, connected LED taillights, and an oversized skid plate that doubles up as the rear diffuser.

The interior details have not been revealed yet, but the Pajero is expected to bring a modern, updated cabin with new upholstery and a broad range of creature comforts. Features may include ventilated seats, a larger infotainment and gauge cluster setup. Mitsubishi is additionally expected to equip the upcoming SUV with an ADAS suite of safety features. Mitsubishi Pajero: Engine and performance Mitsubishi may offer the upcoming Pajero with a range of engine options, including turbo-diesel and plug-in hybrid units.
The choice of powertrain offered within the next-gen Mitsubishi Pajero may likely come down to the SUV's platform. If it returns in its ladder-frame guise, it is likely to be built on the Mitsubishi Triton's chassis and will carry the 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine that makes up to 201 bhp. Few reports suggest that the upcoming Pajero may be based on the Outlander's CMF-C/D monocoque architecture. In this case, the SUV is likely to be equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, delivering up to 302 bhp.

So far, we have numbers coming in from a lot of players and so far, the only thing that we seeing below estimates as of now is the M&M tractor segment and what has beaten estimates is M&M Auto, Ashok Leyland, TVS Motors, and Tata Motors CV. So, largely mixed set of numbers coming in so far because a lot of them are in line as well. What is your take on the kind of auto sales numbers we have seen and how have they fared versus your expectations? ET Now: Why we are talking about pharma, Sharan just said that Trump is actually doing everything he has promised and earlier he has also at least warned the street about a 200% of tariff. To what extent do you think that could actually turn to fruition, anything that can happen on that front, where are you seeing the impact on our pharma sector back home? Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Group Chairman, Inditrade Capital , says the small cars as well as two-wheeler there is a challenge, and we know that, there was a demand constraints and everybody was talking about that. We are hoping that festive season, post monsoon things will pretty much it is in line with the expectation I would say, at least that is what we were pencilling in. We were reasonably sure that the commercial vehicle numbers would be in line and better and improving and that is pretty much what the Ashok Leyland numbers shows. Even if you look at Eicher Motors , their commercial vehicle part does show promise and improvement. As far as domestic two-wheeler sales are concerned, obviously, it is subdued. Look at the Bajaj numbers. They are really bad. Of course, Bajaj has a fantastic export performance which takes care and that is why the overall numbers for Bajaj still looks better. But the small cars as well as two-wheeler there is a challenge, and we know that, there was a demand constraints and everybody was talking about that. We are hoping that festive season, post monsoon things will improve. We will have to wait and watch, that is pretty much what it is. As things stand today, there is a problem as far as demand for small cars as well as two one thing is very sure that as long as Mr Trump is the president, volatility is the order of the day and we have to be bracing ourselves for that. Every day there is something new and some new tweet comes in or some communication, an interview comes in which kind of rattles the market and that is the order of the day. As far as pharma is concerned, putting a tariff 200% or otherwise is not a viable proposition for us and the consumers which Trump is trying to protect. So, he will not venture there. But yesterday's and today's initiative where he has written to the pharma company CEOs to bring down the prices in US, that is a threat definitely and some of the Indian companies who have large business in US definitely will be impacted. If he carries out some other measure, some other punitive measure, or some other steps he takes to ensure that his communication is adhered to, that is a matter of big concern and worry. So, under these circumstances, and this view I have been maintaining for some time, it is better to be a little careful about companies having significant exposure in the US market and focus on companies who have less or no exposure as far as US markets are concerned. So, we were just talking about Mankind Pharma , that is one company which has got 95% of the sales in India and results were decent. So, one can focus on companies like this who have got a significant domestic presence and limited US presence.

US tariff hike puts Indian auto parts and tyre exporters at disadvantage: ICRA

The Indian automotive component and tyre industry could face significant headwinds following the United States' decision to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all Indian imports starting August 7, ratings agency ICRA has cautioned. With the US accounting for a substantial share — 27 per cent — of India's auto component exports and 17 per cent of tyre exports, the move puts domestic manufacturers at a strategic disadvantage compared to peers from countries like Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia, which enjoy lower or preferential tariff structures. 'The imposition of the tariff has raised concerns across India's automotive and tyre sectors, both of which have sizeable exposure to the US market,' ICRA noted in its analysis released on Saturday. The higher tariffs are expected to erode the competitiveness of Indian suppliers, particularly in segments such as off-highway vehicles and replacement tyres. Indian tyre makers, who earlier held a pricing advantage over Chinese exporters, may now lose ground to Southeast Asian rivals benefiting from better trade terms. What are the solutions? To mitigate the impact, ICRA expects Indian exporters to explore new geographies and double down on cost optimisation efforts. However, near-term margin pressures are likely, especially for firms with high dependence on US-bound shipments. India's auto components industry recorded a turnover of $80.2 billion (₹6.73 lakh crore) in FY25, registering a 10 per cent growth over the previous year. Exports during the same period rose by 8 per cent to $22.9 billion (₹1.92 lakh crore). Despite this growth, the new tariff regime threatens to slow momentum in the export-driven segments of the sector unless favourable trade negotiations or alternate market strategies are implemented quickly.
