Guv: Agri education must be in sync with rural requirements
2
Lucknow: Urging researchers to ensure that agricultural education is in sync with rural requirements, governor Anandiben Patel said even as the state had five agricultural universities in order to provide meaningful education these must understand the needs, problems, and priorities of rural India.
Addressing students and faculty at the 11th convocation of the IVRI in Bareilly on Monday, Patel called for greater engagement between universities and nearby villages, stating that such outreach reflects the true purpose of education.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for quality education, Patel said that universities must strive to meet global standards. As part of that vision, she said, the Agricultural University in Ayodhya had earned an A+ grade from NAAC while Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Agricultural University in Meerut had secured an A grade.
"Agriculture and animal husbandry are employment-generating sectors. Full utilisation of schemes and budgets related to these areas can help fulfil the needs of farmers, women, and livestock owners," she said. Giving the example of Gujarat's 2003 Krishi Rath Yatra, she said direct engagement with farmers forms the basis of transformation. "During that journey, scientists, professors, and researchers personally interacted with farmers, understood their challenges, and brought revolutionary reforms in agricultural system," she said.

President Murmu launches 7-day ‘Van Mahotsav', plants ‘rudraksha' sapling
1 2 Gorakhpur/Lucknow: President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday launched the week-long Van Mahotsav at the Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University in Gorakhpur. The mega plantation drive will be carried out from July 1-7 across the country. The President planted a 'Rudraksha' sapling under the 'One Tree for Mother' campaign and emphasised the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable practices. Murmu interacted with local public representatives and took a tour of the exhibition on traditional medicine systems. Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were also present. Governor Anandiben Patel also participated in the tree plantation campaign at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University. A statement issued on the Governor's visit on the first day of this year's Van Mahotsav said that she ceremonially planted saplings of 'rudraksha' and red sandalwood as plants "symbolise harmony between environmental conservation and familial values". Addressing those gathered for the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, Governor said trees are not just protectors of the environment but also life. "The campaign 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' is an expression of our reverence for both nature and motherhood," Patel said. She also directed the university administration to plant saplings of the same species at one location to ensure their scientific and aesthetic development. Praful Patel Tightens Grip on Gondia-Bhandara, Deals Twin Blows to Nana Patole in Cooperative Polls
Nagpur: In a political setback, senior Congress leader and former MPCC president Nana Patole lost control of the Gondia District Central Cooperative Bank (DCCB) to a BJP-NCP alliance led by NCP working president Praful Patel, deepening the long-standing rivalry between the two Vidarbha powerhouses. Patel's 'Sahakar Vikas Panel' secured 11 out of 18 board seats in the DCCB elections held on June 29, while Patole's 'Parivartan Panel', backed by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), managed only seven, with two seats going to independents. The result comes on the heels of another defeat for Patole's faction in the Bhandara Milk Union polls a day earlier, where Patel's side won six seats, Patole's panel got four, and two went to independents. Patole, however, downplayed the defeat. "We gave them a tough fight in both polls. They were three against one. Still, we managed to defeat many of their key players," he told TOI from Mumbai. The bank polls saw two candidates elected unopposed, while the remaining 16 seats witnessed a fierce triangular contest between the BJP-NCP-led Sahakar Panel, the MVA-backed Parivartan Panel, and independents. The outcome further consolidates Patel's growing influence across the cooperative sector in the Gondia-Bhandara belt — a region where Patole's recent electoral victories have not translated into institutional control. Despite defeating Patel in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and narrowly retaining his seat in the 2024 assembly election — winning by just over 200 votes through postal ballots after trailing in the EVM count — Patole has struggled to assert dominance in the cooperative domain, according to party insiders. Meanwhile, Patel has steadily expanded his hold by forging strong alliances with BJP leaders such as Parinay Fuke. Patole accused both Patel and Fuke of "misusing official machinery" and politicising cooperative institutions. At a press conference in Nagpur on June 20, Patole alleged that Patel was involved in aviation sector irregularities during his 2011–12 tenure as Union civil aviation minister in the UPA government under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Patel dismissed the allegations, calling Patole a "chillar neta" (petty leader), further intensifying the political acrimony. In an effort to counter Patel's growing clout, Patole aligned with Shiv Sena MLA Narendra Bhondekar in the Milk Union elections. Though the alliance failed to yield results, Bhondekar later continued to support Patole in the DCCB elections. The rivalry also played out publicly between Fuke and Bhondekar. Fuke accused Bhondekar of forgetting the political support he received, prompting Bhondekar to hit back in the presence of deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde in Bhandara. "We won't back down if challenged. I won on personal merit," he said. These back-to-back electoral setbacks come at a crucial juncture for Patole, raising questions about his influence within the Congress and the MVA, especially as Maharashtra gears up for local body elections. For Patel, the results mark a strategic consolidation of cooperative power ahead of broader political contests in eastern Maharashtra. Govt's Gurjar quota panel meets without stakeholders
Jaipur: The first meeting of the newly formed cabinet sub-committee on Gurjar quota demands was held Tuesday at the state secretariat but notably absent were representatives from the Gurjar Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti, the primary organisation leading the movement for Constitutional protection for their 5% MBC reservation in education and govt jobs. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The three-member panel, headed by parliamentary affairs minister Jogaram Patel, convened to discuss the possibility of including the 5% Most Backward Classes (MBC) quota for Gurjars in the Constitution's Ninth Schedule. The committee includes social justice minister Avinash Gehlot and minister of state for home Jawahar Singh Bedam. Speaking to TOI, Patel said, "Samiti members were invited yesterday (Monday) to attend the meeting but somehow nobody turned up today. I'm sure they will join the next meeting, which will be scheduled soon." The samiti members' absence raised concerns about the consultation process. A samiti representative, speaking on condition of anonymity, cited last minute notice as the reason for their non-attendance. "Most of our members are spread across the state. Such short notice made it logistically impossible to attend the meeting," the samiti member said. "With the Aug 8 deadline approaching, we expect better coordination," the representative said, warning of "indefinite protests" if the deadline is missed. The deadline stems from a June 8 Gurjar Mahapanchayat, where the state govt promised to address the community's demands within two months. Patel, however, downplayed timeline concerns, stating, "What matters is that the process has been initiated."
