Code of Silence viewers were all in agreement as they watched Rose Ayling-Ellis' new drama on ITV on Sunday night
Viewers of the gripping new ITV drama Code of Silence were unanimous in their praise for Rose Ayling-Ellis, who rose to fame as a deaf Strictly Come Dancing champion and actress on EastEnders.
The compelling series kicked off its premiere on Sunday evening (May 18), showcasing Ayling-Ellis's latest role since leaving Albert Square.
In her portrayal of Alison Brooks in Code of Silence, Rose plays a police canteen worker whose years of lip-reading come to the fore when she is brought onto a case involving a major heist plotted by a notorious gang.
As the narrative escalates, the central character finds herself becoming entangled with one of the people under investigation.
Ahead of the show's launch, ITV announced a significant alteration to their advertising approach for the evening, which was relayed via their social media platforms, reports the Manchester Evening News.
A statement given by an ITV representative revealed: "Tonight's episode of Code of Silence will feature a silent ad break, where all adverts will be signed and/or subtitled and run without sound."
This creative move aimed at boosting awareness around deafness saw advertisements from The National Lottery, Virgin Atlantic, Boots Hearingcare, Ikea, Walkers and Aldi broadcast silently, accompanied only by subtitles.
Audiences took to X, previously known as Twitter, to express their thoughts on the innovative ad campaign and the compelling nature of the new drama.
@KDCunliffe applauded: "Bravo @ITV. The advert break is genius. So thought provoking. Brilliant work."
@lornawatts echoed the sentiments with: "ITV airing silent ads during the ad break of the show is a really nice touch. #CodeOfSilence."
The innovation spurred @RyanSoapKing25 to comment: "I hope this raise much needed awareness within the deaf community through this drama and the silent ads moment."
Meanwhile, @putasinghonit was deeply impressed: "ITV turning down the sound for the adverts during #CodeOfSilence and including subtitles and interpreters is a big, big WOW! ! !"
Engagement with the portrayal of the deaf community continued as @J13Bally shared: "I enjoyed Code of Silence last night. I also thought that was a touching and respectful gesture to deaf people to turn the sound off and just add subtitles in one of the ad breaks."
The novel approach resonated with @kirbyhazard who shared: "Watching #CodeOfSilence and I like that ITV are choosing to play silent ads that's are withered signed or subtitled."
In the run-up to the first episode, Andy Kyriacou, controller of ITV Channels, ITV Commercial, hailed Code of Silence as 'groundbreaking', highlighting its critical role in representing the deaf community.
"I'm really pleased to be also bringing this into our commercial airtime. We've worked closely with the brands involved in this innovative ad break to introduce something different that captures viewers' attention and aligns with the drama's theme," he enthused.

A tricky maths question has been leaving people scratching their heads as only 15% can answer it correctly, but it actually has a simple solution. Can you solve it? You'll need to be one of the smartest 15% in the country to answer this maths question correctly. Brainteasers and other puzzles are a fantastic way to make sure you keep your mind in tip-top shape, which can boost cognitive function and help keep degenerative diseases such as dementia at bay. There is a wide array of puzzles that work different areas of your brain, and as much as it's a disliked subject by many, maths is a great way to exercise several areas at once. Recently, a maths question was posed on the ITV game show The 1% Club, where it was claimed only 15% of people would be able to answer it correctly. In the TV show, contestants must answer questions that get increasingly harder as they drop in percentage. They begin with questions that 90% of people should get right, and descend all the way down to the fiendishly difficult 1% question. This particular maths puzzle, which was shared on TikTok, was the 15% question on a recent episode and left many people confused as they struggled to work out the answer. Do you think you've got what it takes to solve it? The question, as posed by host Lee Mack, was this: "What three consecutive numbers add up to 3,000?" While it might seem like a simple maths sum, there's more to it than that. The puzzle asks for consecutive numbers, which means you can't just pick three random numbers, and you can't use the same number twice. For example, the answer isn't "1,000 + 1,500 + 500", as although that does equal 3,000, the numbers are not consecutive. All three numbers must follow one another in order for the answer to be correct, such as 1 + 2 + 3 = 6. Have you worked it out yet? If not, here's a hint for you: Think about the most obvious way you'd get to 3,000 using three digits if they could all be the same. Is there anything you can change about those digits to get you to the right answer? If you're still working it out, don't scroll any further, as we're about to give you the solution. Answer If all your digits were allowed to be the same, then the most obvious solution would be 1,000 + 1,000 + 1,000, right? These are not consecutive numbers, but you can make them consecutive by changing just one thing. Taking one away from the first 1,000 and adding it to the last 1,000 gives you the correct answer: 999 + 1,000 + 1,001. This is the only way to get to 3,000 using three consecutive numbers. Commenters on the TikTok video were left baffled by the puzzle. Some claimed it was "easy" for a 15% question, while others said it left them stumped - and some even gave completely wrong answers. One person confidently said: "900, 1,000, and 11,000. Come on people, it's got to add up to 3,000." Their incorrect answer prompted someone else to respond: "At first, I was confused as to why this was only a 15% question, but after reading through the comment section, I understand now."

She joined the BBC in 1990, a year after Margaret Thatcher got the keys to 10 Downing Street, and was one of a new wave of female news anchors. But Jan Leeming, 83, has taken a swipe at the current generation of newsreaders, criticising their pronunciation, mumbled speech and heavy accents. She wrote on X earlier this month: 'Am I just showing my age being so picky, but surely a national newsreader should be aware of correct pronunciation. 'Just heard "grievious" twice from an ITV newsreader. The word is grievous. The other is mischievious - it's mischievous - three syllables not four. 'We had spelling tests every week. I suppose today one doesn't have to bother. AI and predictive texting will do it all for you. 'You still have to speak with correct pronunciation and clarity. Have given up on mumbled speech and heavy accents and hope I'll get the gist eventually. '"Ss" for the presenters and newsreaders who cannot pronounce fifth and sixth - even some of my favourites. Oh, don't forget February and jewellery. 'If you aren't taught and corrected, then you perpetuate the incorrect pronunciation. Her post comes after crossbench peer Lord Jones, of Birmingham criticised BBC Olympics presenter Alex Scott for spoiling coverage of the 2020 Games with her accent. 'Enough! I can't stand it anymore!' he wrote on X. 'Alex Scott spoils a good presentational job on the BBC Olympics Team with her very noticeable inability to pronounce her "g"s at the end of a word. 'Can't someone give these people elocution lessons? I fear that it may be aped by youngsters along the lines of the use of the moronic interrogative originally caused by "Neighbours"; on behalf of the English Language ... Help!' Responding to a tweet which said: 'If it's good enough for the Dep PM - nucleer - then it must be okay,' she replied: 'Please don't go down that road. I could be locked up for my opinion of that person.' Leeming, voted TV personality of the year after she presented the 1982 Eurovision Song Contest, sparked outrage last year after she complained she no longer got work because she was too 'old', spoke RP and didn't tick 'modern boxes'. She later clarified on GB News that she didn't mean that she was too posh for TV. 'I'm not posh,' she said. 'I grew up in Southeast London - Woolwich. My father had had a wonderful education in India and he spoke beautifully. 'He sounded a little bit like Richard Burton. And when I started sort of, you know, "talking like that", he sent me to speech and drama lessons. Thank you very much, father, because I've earned my living. 'What this follower was saying was basically that he could understand me; I enunciate. I'm not against accents, not at all. In fact, some of them are very endearing. 'I mean, I love Eamonn Holmes, and you know Gloria Hunniford, when she started 40 odd years ago, had a very strong Northern Ireland accent and she moderated it.'
