Meta faces Italian investigation over AI tool on WhatsApp
The watchdog said Meta may have violated European Union competition rules by integrating its Meta AI assistant into WhatsApp without user consent.
Italian representatives from Meta were not immediately available for comment.
Meta AI, which provides chatbot-style responses and virtual assistant functions, has been part of WhatsApp's interface since March 2025, and included in the app's search bar, the authority said.
The regulator said inclusion could unfairly steer users toward Meta's AI services, potentially harming competitors and locking users into the platform.

"I am extremely optimistic that superintelligence will help humanity accelerate our pace of progress. But perhaps even more important is that superintelligence has the potential to begin a new era of personal empowerment where people will have greater agency to improve the world in the directions they choose," he added. According to The New York Times, Mark Zuckerberg told investors that superintelligence is more advanced than the human brain and will enhance nearly every aspect of daily life. He explained that AI is already helping Meta's advertising by making social media feeds more engaging, keeping users on the platform longer. Additionally, he said AI will act as a personal assistant for users, ushering in "a new era of individual empowerment." The main way people will interact with superintelligence will be through Meta's smart glasses, which have cameras and software that can shoot and process videos, Mr Zuckerberg said. "I think that if history is a guide, then an even more important role will be how superintelligence empowers people to be more creative, develop culture and communities, connect with each other, and lead more fulfilling lives," he said. Mr Zuckerberg's comments came as Meta reported revenue of $47.5 billion for the second quarter, up 22 percent from a year earlier and above Wall Street estimates of $44.8 billion, according to data compiled by FactSet. Profit was $18.3 billion, up 36 percent from a year earlier and surpassing estimates of $15.1 billion.

Meta Stock Soars 12% After Crushing Earnings and Unveiling Huge AI Plans
Meta Platforms Inc (META) shares surged 12% on Thursday morning after the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings and gave an optimistic outlook for the third quarter, according to a news release by the social media giant. For Q2, Meta posted earnings per share (EPS) of $7.14 and revenue of $47.5 billion. Analysts had expected EPS of $5.89 and revenue of $44.83 billion. This marks a strong improvement from the same period last year, when the company reported EPS of $5.16 and revenue of $39.07 billion. As per the company's report, Meta's advertising revenue reached $46.5 billion, surpassing the forecast of $44.07 billion. Meanwhile, its Reality Labs division, which focuses on virtual and augmented reality, reported a loss of $4.5 billion, slightly better than the expected $4.8 billion loss. Looking ahead, Meta expects third-quarter revenue between $47.5 billion and $50.5 billion, higher than Wall Street's projection of $46.2 billion. The strong earnings come as Meta increases investment in artificial intelligence. CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently appointed Shengjia Zhao, a former OpenAI researcher, as the head of its new Superintelligence Lab. Meta has also made major hires from companies like GitHub, Safe Superintelligence, Apple, and Scale AI-where it invested $14.3 billion and recruited CEO Alexandr Wang. Additionally, Meta is heavily investing in AI infrastructure.
