All arrangements in place for ‘Vanamahotsavam' in Andhra's Amaravati
As part of the Vanamahotsavam, air-purifying and ornamental trees—including Cassia fistula, Tecoma argentina, Bignonia, Plumeria, Neem, and Ravi—will be planted to enhance biodiversity. In collaboration with the AP Forest Department and the Central Pollution Control Board, the event will see 1,000 saplings planted within the park, while across the State, an ambitious one crore seedlings will take root on June 5 alone.
Over the entire monsoon season, a staggering 5.58 crore trees will be planted, covering native species and mangroves to support ecosystems and combat climate change.
Nearly 1,500 attendees are expected at Anantavaram Park, where preparations are in full swing. On Wednesday, Guntur district in-charge Collector A Bhargav Tej, SP Satish Kumar, APMIDC Chairman Degala Prabhakar, and Guntur RDO Srinivasarao inspected the venue and outlined key instructions for sanitation, vehicle parking, barricading, and uninterrupted power supply.
To ensure security and smooth logistics, Guntur district police have made elaborate arrangements.
SP Satish Kumar confirmed a strong police presence at the venue, with stringent measures in place to safeguard attendees and ensure the seamless movement of dignitaries.

Hyderabad: In a significant push for a healthier and greener urban environment, GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, along with GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, officially launched a massive tree plantation drive as part of the VanaMahotsavam initiative. The drive commenced with the planting of saplings at Shirdi Hills Colony in the Kukatpally Zone, marking the start of an ambitious project to plant 25 lakh (2.5 million) saplings across Greater Hyderabad. Inspired by the 'Green Legacy' concept, the Mayor has urged all citizens to actively participate in transforming the city. 'We have set a target of planting 25 lakh saplings this year with public participation, as per government directives,' stated Mayor Vijayalakshmi. She further emphasised that saplings would be distributed to every household in the city, encouraging residents to take an active role in the initiative throughout the planting season. A heartwarming aspect of the campaign is the slogan 'Ek ped, Maa ke naam' (One tree in the name of mother), encouraging individuals to plant a tree in honour of their mothers. The Mayor underscored the crucial importance of not just planting trees but also ensuring their proper care, highlighting that these efforts would cultivate a healthier environment for future generations. Commissioner Karnan reiterated the programme's objective to make Hyderabad green, stressing that the government's goals would be achieved by setting specific VanaMahotsavam targets within each ward. He also laid emphasis on nurturing the planted saplings, stating that 'greater emphasis will be placed on nurturing the plants rather than merely planting them.' The launch event saw enthusiastic participation from students, who chanted 'Go Green' slogans alongside the Mayor and Commissioner, underscoring community involvement in this vital environmental endeavour. Also present were Kukatpally Zonal Commissioner Apurva Chauhan, UBD Additional Commissioner Subhadra Devi, and Corporator RavulaSeshagiri Rao.

ADC plans biodiversity drive Amaravati's green makeover
1 2 3 Vijayawada: Amaravati Development Corporation (ADC) is gearing up to develop the capital city Amaravati with rich biodiversity. ADC has not only set its focus on the development of greenery in Amaravati but also determined to make it a highly beautiful city with biodiversity. With chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is very keen on making Amaravati a unique in all spheres, ADC is roping in prominent horticulture experts from across the country to take up big-ticket green projects. "A 320-kilometre road network in Amaravati is being designed to be adorned with greenery. Similarly, govt buildings and various construction complexes are being developed with green cover," said ADC chairperson Dr Lakshmi Parthasaradhi Bhaskar. Preparations are also underway to establish greenery and parks in the 18 Land Pooling Scheme (LPS) zones allocated for farmers. Buffer zones of 100 to 150 meters will be created on both sides of naturally formed streams like Kondaveeti Vagu and Palavagu. Following the guidelines of the National Green Tribunal, a 22-kilometre stretch along the Krishna river basin will be developed with blue-green concepts. Subsequently, ADC consulted Dr. Smita Hegde, a member of the research and development team at Bengaluru airport and an expert in biodiversity tree mapping at the Centre for Advanced Learning (CFAL) and sought her support. Dr Smitha shared her experiences with team ADC. She explained the reforms initiated by her team that helped reduce high temperatures in Mangaluru city. She said that they have trained about 1,200 students to map 68,000 trees in three months in Mangaluru. "By preserving trees like Kalpavriksha, Nakshatra, and Neem, which provide ample oxygen, we succeeded in reducing the temperature by 4 degrees in Mangaluru. Biodiversity contributes to economic development in 178 countries worldwide," said Dr Smitha. Bengaluru International Airport elaborated on greenery development using a sensor-based weather system. Experts in biological pest control, environment and horticulture were being consulted for betterment of the ideas at ADC. Hyderabad zoo welcomes 2 exotic Serval cats
HYDERABAD: The Nehru Zoological Park , Hyderabad, has expanded its collection of exotic animals with the release of a pair of Serval cats into the enclosure for public display on Sunday. This new exotic species, both two years old, is endemic to the African continent and can live up to 16 years in captivity. The zoo now has 195 species in its collection.
