Youths claim trial to assaulting basketball spectator in Siburan
KUCHING (July 4): Two youths claimed trial in the Magistrates' Court here today to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to a basketball game spectator in Siburan on June 28.
Sia Ming Hui, 21, and a 17-year-old male were charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the same Code.
The Section provides for a prison sentence of up to 10 years, or a fine, or caning, or any two of these punishments, upon conviction.
According to the charges, both youths allegedly beat up the victim at around 9pm at a basketball court in Siburan.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan ordered both accused to be released on a cash bail of RM2,500 each with one local surety.
He also fixed Aug 15, 2025 for pre-trial case management.
Insp Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case, while both accused were represented by counsel Lim Lian Kee.
The incident occurred during a basketball tournament, when several unauthorised individuals forcefully entered the court and assaulted a spectator.
Organiser Siburan Basketball Club stated the incident did not involve any players, team members, referees, or members of the organising committee.

Tangkak trader loses over RM66,000 in part-time job scam
TANGKAK: A female trader has lost RM66,825 after being duped by a part-time job scam advertised through a popular e-commerce application. Tangkak police chief Supt Roslan Mohd Talib said the 36-year-old victim received the job offer via the app and was instructed to complete a series of tasks, with commission promised. "Despite following all instructions and completing the tasks, the victim did not receive any payments," he said in a statement on Saturday (July 5). Investigations revealed that the victim had carried out 12 fund transfers to eight different bank accounts, resulting in total losses of RM66,825. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment, whipping and a fine upon conviction. RM103,000 Criminal Breach of Trust: Clerk claims trial

Kota Kinabalu: A 37-year-old accountant clerk claimed trial to three counts of committing criminal breach of trust involving a sum of RM103,351.36. Brandon Ng Jia Lie made the plea after the charges were read before three Sessions Court Judges, Hurman Hussain, Elsie Primus and Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim, Friday. Advertisement On the first count, Ng is accused of breaching the trust given to him as an accountant clerk by depositing two cheques amounting to RM6,462.50 belonged to Syarikat Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd, into his bank account for his own use. The alleged incident took place between Nov 16, 2021 and Dec 31, 2021 at the Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad, here. On the second count, he allegedly committed criminal breach of trust by depositing another eight cheques amounting to RM64,169.26 belonged to Syarikat Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd, into his bank account for his own use, between Feb 29, 2022 and Dec 29, 2022 at the same place. On the third count, Ng is accused of committing the offence by depositing five cheques amounting to RM32,719.60 belonged to Syarikat Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd, into his bank account for his own use at the same place between Feb 3, 2023 and July 27, 2023. The offence, under Section 408 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of between one and 14 years, and whipping, and liable to fine, on conviction. The court set Aug 12, this year, and released on bail of RM5,000 in two local sureties for each charge. Ng was also ordered to report to the nearest police station every first and third Friday of the month and his passport, if any, to be impounded by the court until the disposal of his case. Earlier, the prosecution objected to bail Ng on the grounds that he has three charges against him but if the court were to grant bail, there were several conditions to be imposed on him. Ng, who was not represented, asked for bail to be given to him saying that it was his first court case and if he was denied bail, there's no one else to financially provide for his family since his wife is a full-time housewife. He also claimed that he has no authority to sign or approve any cheque. Ng requested for the amount of bail to be between RM2,000 and RM3,000, adding that he would apply for the legal service from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
