Dale Steyn can't hold back tears, picks his SA cap, then goes quiet after South Africa win WTC: 'Life will go on but…'
One such man was Dale Steyn, a legendary fast bowler and one of the best of all time, who never quite got close to lifting an ICC trophy. Steyn, on media duties for Star Sports, was overcome by pure emotion in the wake of those winning runs, rendered nearly speechless by what it meant to watch his country finally get over that hurdle.
In a video shared by the Star Sports social media handles, Steyn can be seen struggling to form words and fight back tears, before falling silent for an extended period as the realisation of the moment truly dawned on him.
'What do you do, what do you say? It's incredible, I'm sitting at home, I've got my cap here, I'm extremely proud. I mean, what do you do? I'll take my son for a walk and life will carry on,' said the fast bowler, lifting up his Proteas Test cap, before falling silent and welling up with emotion following the moment. It is evident how poignant a moment this is considered in South African cricket history.
Steyn wasn't the only South African to feel the brunt of the moment, with Keshav Maharaj also fighting through tears of his own to speak to former captain Graeme Smith about how much it means to the country to get over the line after years of heartbreak, and repeatedly falling short of the ultimate glory.

At the end, it was Aiden Markram the hero with one of South Africa's most famous Test centuries, assisted by Kagiso Rabada's 9-fer, a man who is considered to be Dale Steyn's successor in South Africa's long list of fast bowling greats.

"Pehle Hi Mat Decide Kar": Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill Chat Caught On Stump Mic. Here's What Happened
A conversation between India captain Shubman Gill and his deputy Rishabh Pant has gone viral on social media, amid the ongoing 1st Test against England in Birmingham. Pant was heard passing some instructions to Gill after noticing that the ball had lost its hardness, suggesting that it would be hard to take quick singles. Gill seemingly echoed Pant's sentiments and indicated that they wouldn't push for risky singles. " Dekh lenge call pe. Pehle hi mat decide kar kuch bhi. Call rakhenge ek," Pant was heard telling Gill in a video shared by Star Sports. #RishabhPant and #ShubmanGill were cooking something and it wasn't just runs. Watch the full moment from the field and enjoy the banter! #ENGvIND 2nd TEST, Day 1 | LIVE NOW on JioHotstar — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) July 2, 2025 Gill and Pant, who are in the leadership roles in the team -- as captain and vice-captain -- gave a glimpse of the understanding they have in the middle. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from the format, both Gill and Pant take up the roles of being the two pillars of the team. As for the match, Gill became the first Indian and Asian captain to score a double hundred in a Test match in England when he completed his milestone on Thursday. The previous best was 193 by Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan at Lord's in 2011. Gill, who scored 147 on his debut as Test captain at Leeds, completed his maiden double hundred in the traditional format when he pulled Josh Tongue towards deep fine leg for a single. He took 311 deliveries to reach his double hundred which earned him a place alongside MAK Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni as captains with double hundreds for India. Virat Kohli holds the record with seven double centuries as skipper for India. Before Gill, the highest score by an Indian skipper in a SENA country was 192 by Mohammed Azharuddin against New Zealand in Auckland back in 1990. Azharuddin's 179 in Manchester in 1990 was the highest score by an Indian skipper in England. En route his double ton, Gill smashed 21 fours and two sixes and became the third Indian batter to score a double ton in Old Blighty after legendary pair of Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid.

Steve Smith Back As Australia Announce Playing XI For 2nd Test Vs West Indies
Last Updated: Steve Smith has recovered from a finger injury he sustained during the final of the ICC World Test Championship. Steve Smith has recovered from a serious dislocated finger and will return for Australia's second Test against the West Indies this week, replacing Josh Inglis, according to skipper Pat Cummins. Smith injured his finger while fielding in the slips during the World Test Championship final at Lord's three weeks ago and was taken to hospital. This injury sidelined him for the first Test in Barbados, which Australia won by 159 runs, and his absence was felt as the side's top order struggled. 'He's ready to go, the finger held up well," Cummins said on Wednesday at St George's in Grenada, with the 36-year-old set to bat with a splint. Smith will return to the number four spot after Inglis failed to capitalize on his opportunity, scoring just five and 12. While Inglis misses out, the selectors have retained teenager Sam Konstas as Usman Khawaja's opening partner and the under-performing Cameron Green at three, resisting the urge to recall the axed Marnus Labuschagne, who remains with the squad. The rest of the team remains unchanged, with the formidable combination of Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood leading the attack once again. 'He was really happy, particularly batting," Cummins added about Smith, who is unlikely to field in his usual slip position. 'Fielding we still potentially need to manage a little bit. So he might not be in the slips too often – maybe for spin he'll be okay, but for the quicks he might need to wait another week." Cummins said it was an unknown and having vice-captain Smith back to help him problem-solve was a bonus. 'That's one of his great strengths," he said of the 117-Test veteran. 'He's scored runs all over the world and that means that while he's not played a game here, he seems to work out pretty quickly what needs to be done and where your scoring areas are. 'Having that knowledge is going to be helpful, particularly for the guys who haven't played too many Tests or first-class games on similar wickets."
