Paul Skenes dazzles in his first start since the All-Star Game as the Pirates blank the Tigers 3-0
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Skenes allowed three hits over six efficient innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers 3-0 on Monday night.
Skenes (5-8), who last week became the first pitcher to start the All-Star game in each of the first two years of his career, struck out six, walked one and a hit batter to pick up his first victory since late May.
The 23-year-old lowered his ERA to a major league-best 1.91 as Pittsburgh responded from a weekend sweep at home by the lowly Chicago White Sox by keeping the team that entered Monday with the best record in the majors in check.
The Pirates did enough against Jack Flaherty (5-10) to give Skenes a bit of breathing room, a rarity during Pittsburgh's frustrating season.
Spencer Horwitz had three hits for the Pirates, including a run-scoring single in the second. Bryan Reynolds hit a two-run single two batters later, and Skenes and three relievers made it hold up. David Bednar worked the ninth for his 14th save.
Parker Meadows doubled for Detroit, which has dropped seven of eight but still has a double-digit lead in the AL Central. Flaherty lasted three innings and is winless in his last seven starts. Key moment
The closest Detroit came to scoring against Skenes came in the third when the Tigers' first two batters reached. A fly ball, a fielder's choice, and a strikeout on a 99 mph fastball later, Skenes was back in the dugout. Key stat
Pirates designated hitter Andrew McCutchen recorded his 2,233rd career hit on a single in the fourth inning, moving past Hall of Famer Willie Stargell and into 180th on MLB's hit list. Up next
Detroit's Casey Mize (9-3, 3.15 ERA) will try to reach 10 wins for the first time in his career on Tuesday when he faces Pittsburgh's Mitch Keller (3-10, 3.48).

ESPN unimpressed with Steelers roster changes this offseason in rankings
2025 has been an unprecedented offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh took a hyper-aggressive approach to roster building, including some huge free-agent additions and two blockbuster trades. This is all in an attempt to finally get the Steelers over the hump and actually win a playoff game. ESPN ranked every NFL roster and despite all the moves, they seem underwhelmed by the Steelers. They have Pittsburgh ranked at No. 19 overall. The identified edge rusher as the roster's biggest strength. While we agree that the foursome of T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig and Jack Sawyer are probably the best in the AFC, this group (minus Sawyer) hasn't been great the last three seasons. Pittsburgh only had 40 sacks last season and hasn't had more than 47 since 2021. As far as the biggest weakness, ESPN went with offensive tackle. This is absolutely a fair point. Broderick Jones has moved to left tackle after taking a step back in his second season and new right tackle Troy Fautanu is coming off of a serious knee injury and is a completely unknown. PITTSBURGH — Paul Skenes wants the ball. All the time. Yet the only pitcher in major league history to start the All-Star Game in each of his first two seasons also understands the Pittsburgh Pirates are intent on playing the long game with his electric right arm. They did a year ago, when they put Skenes on a soft innings cap during his remarkable rookie season. They're doing it again this summer. To a point, anyway.

Wyndham Clark speaks out on Oakmont ban over locker room incident at U.S. Open
Wyndham Clark has spoken out for the first time about being banned from Oakmont Country Club in the wake of an incident where he damaged a locker in the clubhouse after missing the cut at the U.S. Open last month. Clark addressed the incident on Sunday following the final round of The Open Championship at Royal Portrush, where he finished tied for 4th place. "Yeah, so obviously I feel terrible with what happened," Clark said. "I'm doing anything I can to try to remedy the situation." Last week, reports surfaced that Oakmont Country Club president John Lynch notified members that the locker incident has led to Clark no longer being allowed on club property. Clark said between himself, Oakmont, and the USGA, all parties involved are trying to keep things private. Lynch said in the letter that Clark's reinstatement would be contingent on a number of things, including paying for the damages at the club, making a contribution to the charity that the club's board chooses, and completing counseling or anger management. "Yeah, we reached out and we wanted to do that," Clark said. "Obviously it's a no-brainer to pay for the damages. That was a given. Then obviously all the apologies, and I want to give back to the community because I hurt a great place in Pittsburgh, so I wanted to do anything I can to show them that what happened there was not a reflection of who I am and won't happen again. But I want to show them who I really am with the apology and the things I'm going to do." Clark added that he wants the best for Oakmont, for the USGA, and for himself and that he hopes that within a few months, the whole incident will be put in the past. Oakmont Country Club, one of the storied venues in the game of golf, has hosted the U.S. Open a record ten times and is poised to host the event again in 2033, the year Clark's automatic exemptions into the tournament run out. Clark said he hopes to be in the field when the U.S. Open returns to Oakmont, but added that the decision will ultimately be up to the club. Clark burst into prominence in 2023 with two victories, including the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. He also earned a spot on the Ryder Cup team that year. He currently sits 16th in the standings for the upcoming Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, where the top six players will automatically make the team.
