Williams completes comeback as New Saints toast treble
TNS completed a historic domestic treble for the first time since 2016 after overcoming the challenge of Connah's Quay Nomads in the JD Welsh Cup final at Rodney Parade.
A bizarre opening to the cup final in Newport saw the Deesiders mistakenly name the injured Kai Edwards in their starting line-up.
The Nomads wanted to replace him with Chris Marriott who had not initially been included among the substitutes which prompted an objection from the Saints.
Bizarrely Nomads named substitute goalkeeper Jon Rushton in the starting line-up with Marriott added to the bench.
Rushton did not take his place on the pitch at Newport's Rodney Parade and remained on the bench with Nomads opting to start with only 10 players.
When the ball went out of play inside the opening minute Nomads made the substitution which saw ex-TNS captain Marriott enter the field.
Nomads led inside the opening seven minutes as Rhys Hughes crossed from the right for Declan Poole to make no mistake from the edge of the six-yard box.
TNS soon responded and Rory Holden curled a 20 yard free-kick past the diving George Ratcliffe to get his side back on terms just 10 minutes later.
Four minutes before the interval there was a great opportunity for the JD Cymru Premier champions to take the lead but Dan Williams failed to turn home cross from Jordan Williams.
TNS led for the first time on 54 minutes as Jordan Williams headed home Danny Redmond's cross from the edge of the six-yard box after some slick TNS possession.
Max Woodcock's curling effort dipped over the bar before Harrison McGahey prevented substitute Fumpa Mwandwe from working an opening on 65 minutes.
With 12 minutes to go, captain Redmond came to his side's rescue as he made an important challenge to deny Poole at the back post as the Deesiders laid siege to the Oswestrians late on.
However, the Saints were not to be denied as the Oswestry club completed the treble.

However, McClean believes that leaving key football decisions to Parkinson and his coaching staff has been a masterstroke by the two A-listers. He also spoke in glowing terms about his time at the club to date and how it has helped to prolong his career. "It's class and I've found a place where I'm appreciated," McClean told the Irish News. "People have got a lot of respect for me and when that's the case, obviously I'll go above and beyond to repay that. "It has given me a new lease to life, I'm enjoying my football and I feel like I can do this for a long time yet. Rob and Ryan are 100 per cent part of it, but they are very clever men. They are part of it to a certain extent. "They obviously don't get involved with team affairs, they leave that to the managers, but to have owners involved as they are in the right way, it's class. There are no words to describe the impact that they've had and the praise they deserve, because it's absolutely above and beyond." Wrexham are currently preparing to play in the Championship for the first time in 43 years. Parkinson has also brought in two new faces to help his side compete in the second tier, with Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie and Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward joining, and more expected to follow. While the manager is expected to be well-backed in the transfer market by Reynolds and McElhenney this summer, some pundits have already dismissed Wrexham's chances of pulling off an unprecedented fourth promotion in a row. But McClean was bullish when asked about the club's hopes of reaching the Premier League for the first time ever and warned people not to write them off. The ex-Sunderland and West Brom player said: "The rise of the club from where it was a few years ago to where it is now is great. We're on a roll at the minute, momentum is like a steam train, the buzz around the place is brilliant. "From our point of view, it's the same as every year. We'll go into the season with people telling us 'this can't be done' and 'that can't be done' and 'this is a step too far', but with Wrexham it's the old fairytale story and let's see how we get on." McClean added: "We we told two in a row would have been tough, three in a row would be impossible and four in a row is just non-existent and it won't happen. 'Difficult' challenge at Man Utd appeals to former star who's ready to return
Former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has opened up on his coaching ambitions and the possibility of managing the Red Devils in the future Nemanja Vidic has expressed his ambition to take the helm at Manchester United someday. Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson back in December 2005 for £7million, Vidic turned out to be a bargain as he rose to prominence as one of the top defenders in the Premier League. During his trophy-laden stint in Manchester, Vidic celebrated winning 15 major honours, among them five Premier League crowns, before Louis van Gaal showed him the door following a dip in performance and injury woes. The Serbian ace hung up his boots after an 18-month spell with Inter Milan, with persistent injuries calling time on his playing days. Although Vidic has previously discussed delving into coaching, his main focus currently is his family, especially with three young kids at home. Nevertheless, Vidic admits to harbouring managerial dreams at the hallowed Old Trafford ground. "If I was to manage or coach anyone, it would have to be Manchester United," he disclosed on The Overlap. "I like things when they're difficult and to change something from difficult to good, this is something I like to do." Considering his immediate future, Vidic said: "I'm open an opportunity to be a coach, or to work in football as a Sporting Director, or even the Serbian President of the FA – that was the plan a few years ago – it didn't happen but maybe it could happen in the future." Vidic went on to open up about his ventures off the pitch and how his drive for excellence transcends into business. He said: "Obviously, what I'm doing outside [of football], business wise, creating a company which is going to be not just successful but is going to be who I am as well. "Everything I do, I like to do the best I can, and to produce the quality. In the business I'm doing now, with the apartments, that's what I'm trying to achieve as well. To create good apartments and nice buildings, which I'm going to be proud walking in, and being proud of what I've built." The ex-United star discussed the difficult side of fatherhood, especially when it comes to watching his son follow in his footsteps. He added: "It's difficult watching my son play football because he's playing centre-back and I see everything in terms of what he can do better. "I'm the type of person that when they see, they have to say – I can't keep it to myself. He's learning now to accept that but it's good. I like watching him when I see his improvement and in the last year, he has improved a lot." He also reflected on the family atmosphere at home and the subject of footballing expectations placed on his children. "In my house, we don't really talk much about football," Vidic said. "We don't talk about how many trophies I won – I'm not much in the media. People are always saying, 'Your son has pressure' – I don't think he has any pressure. He has an advantage. "Everyone knows who his dad is and the first thing they are going to do is compare and see how good he is. So, people will come to watch you, and if you are good, you are good." George Russell ‘calling' F1 teams as Nico Rosberg proven right on Mercedes star
Toto Wolff's very public pursuit of Red Bull star Max Verstappen has reportedly sprung George Russell into action, with the Mercedes star's future now looking uncertain Nico Rosberg's previous comments about George Russell's precarious position at Mercedes seem to be hitting the mark, as Toto Wolff's chase for Max Verstappen heats up. The Silver Arrows' boss has not been shy about his admiration for Red Bull's No. 1 driver, and it appears Russell could be the one to make way for the Dutch star. Wolff's courting of Verstappen has been public knowledge for some time, while Russell's contract has not been extended beyond this year. Such is the speculation around Russell being replaced, Sky Sports ' Martin Brundle has even claimed that the 27-year-old is now ringing teams, looking to find a new home for his talents, as concerns grow over his future in F1. Former world champion Rosberg told Russell last season that his job was not safe, insisting that Wolff would never tire in his chase of Verstappen. The ex-Mercedes star looks to have been proven correct, which will pile the pressure on Russell to outperform team-mate Kimi Antonelli this season, with the British Grand Prix fast approaching. "George Russell is not safe at all because Toto still wants Max and he will try again for 2026," Rosberg said on Sky Sports in September 2024. "'Give up' does not appear in Toto's vocabulary. "So if Max does become available and I do think it's a possibility, then it is a shootout between George and Kimi next year. And it's a lot of pressure on George because he has everything to lose. He should be the one ahead because Kimi is 18 and completely new. It's not an easy situation for George." Sky Italy has claimed that Verstappen would be willing to consider a switch from Red Bull to Mercedes, with Wolff reportedly laying down an offer. Yet, Red Bull maintains that their star driver hasn't shown any eagerness to jump ship just yet. Brundle, sharing his insights on Sky Sports F1, reckons Russell is now scrambling for a backup plan amid the swirling rumours. "I think George Russell is nervous and ringing around a little bit," he said. "There's no smoke without fire. 2026 is massive, biggest change ever in F1 for the chassis and power unit and you guess Mercedes will be there or thereabouts. Would you put Red Bull (there) and can Max actually get out of his contract? Something's up." Wolff once again revealed his ambitions to land Verstappen to Sky Sports in late June but claimed it did not impact Russell's new deal with the team. "First of all, there is no delay in George's contract situation because it's pretty clear since a long time what our timings were," Wolff said. "We've known each other for such a long time, so there is no such thing as a delay. "But also as a team principal responsible for the best car brand in the world, it is clear you're exploring what a four-time world champion [Verstappen] is going to do in the future, and that could be a long time in the future. But that has no effect on us putting a signature on George's contract." Wolff added that Russell was aware of Mercedes' position on Verstappen. Mercedes' German chief has been the source of mixed messaging when it comes to chasing the Red Bull icon. Summer 2024 saw Wolff publicly declare his interest in Verstappen over for the time being - yet his short-term commitment to Antonelli and Russell did little to banish the rumours and instead just moved them a year down the line. As for Red Bull, they've not been shy about revealing that Verstappen holds an exit clause in his contract that reportedly allows him to leave if he moves lower than third in the World Drivers' Championship standings at a any point in the F1 2025 season. Vertsappen is currently third in the standings, just nine points above Russell in fourth. However, it is understood that the clause changes to the top four after the Hungarian Grand Prix, just ahead of the summer break. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has also conceded that Verstappen does have a release clause "based on performance". Speaking after the Austrian Grand Prix, where Verstappen was taken out of the race after a coming-together with Antonelli, Marko added that "there is no concern whatsoever about an exit" when it comes to Red Bull's prized possession. While team boss Christian Horner has called the ongoing speculation as "a lot of noise."
