Alex Palou's crash in Detroit Grand Prix continues streak of Indy 500 winner not winning next race

Yahoo01-06-2025
DETROIT — Alex Palou hoped to make the next bit of history with a win in the Indianapolis 500 and the same series' race the following weekend for the first time in more than 30 years.
Palou, the first Spaniard to win the Indy 500, crashed into a barrier on Turn 1 with 28 laps to go. It came after the leaders pitted on a caution and during the restart with contact from David Malukas. It will be Palou's worst placement (25th, did not finish) in a dominant season after he won five of the first six races and finished runner up to Kyle Kirkwood at Long Beach.

Q & A Highlights Q: Can you discuss the forward demand picture and the impact of potential tariff pull-ins versus continued recovery? A: Michael Doogue, President and CEO, explained that Allegro is seeing positive trends such as strong bookings and growing backlog. While tariffs create uncertainty, discussions with customers indicate potential future component shortages due to real demand, particularly in industrial and automotive sectors. Derek D'Antilio, CFO, added that the impact of tariffs on Allegro is currently immaterial, with no direct impact on their shipments. Q: What helped drive the upside in gross margin, and how do you see the drivers of gross margin moving forward? A: Derek D'Antilio, CFO, noted that Q1 gross margin exceeded expectations due to better-than-expected revenue and cost benefits from supplier negotiations. Looking forward, they expect continued benefits from cost reductions and a favorable mix, with a projected gross margin of 48% to 50% in Q2. Q: How do you view the automotive demand recovery, and what are your expectations for automotive sales growth? A: Michael Doogue, President and CEO, mentioned that S&P revised their automotive production forecast upwards, indicating a flat vehicle production landscape. Allegro is seeing increased demand from automotive customers, with signs pointing to a recovery in the sector. Q: Can you provide more details on the industrial exposure, particularly in clean energy and data center sectors? A: Michael Doogue, President and CEO, explained that while clean energy is a part of their industrial focus, they are seeing strong growth in data center and robotics sectors. The industrial business has experienced four consecutive quarters of growth, with data center leading the recent uptick. Q: What are the future drivers for e-mobility, and how do you see the timing of new products impacting growth? A: Michael Doogue, President and CEO, highlighted that e-mobility growth is driven by increasing dollar content in steering and braking systems, as well as current sensors in EVs. Allegro's isolated gate drivers are expected to drive significant growth, particularly in the EV and data center markets. The 2025 season features a record 24 races across five continents, with teams battling for both the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships. After McLaren's dominant performance in 2024, the 2025 season has opened up with heightened competition. Red Bull Racing - Team Profile & 2025 Season So Far Oracle Red Bull Racing, crowned Constructors' Champion multiple times in recent years, is led by star driver Max Verstappen and supported by his teammate Yuki Tsunoda as of mid‑season, following Liam Lawson's move back to the junior Racing Bulls team. Recent race highlights: - Australian GP (March): Verstappen finished 2nd behind Lando Norris (McLaren) in the season opener. - Japanese GP (April): Verstappen claimed a commanding win from pole in Suzuka, holding off strong challenges from Norris and Piastri. - Saudi Arabia GP (April): Verstappen took P2 behind Oscar Piastri, who took the championship lead. - Emilia‑Romagna GP (Imola, May): Verstappen earned his 2nd win of the season and the 124th ever for Red Bull Racing, starting from P2. - Monaco GP (May): Despite strong efforts, Verstappen could not win—McLaren's Norris prevailed, with Red Bull's Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls) scoring career-best finishes of 8th and 6th respectively. - British GP (Silverstone, July): Verstappen secured pole but McLaren dominated the race with Norris and Piastri finishing 1‑2. Red Bull struggled with setup and adaptability. - Belgian GP Sprint Race (Spa, July): Verstappen delivered Red Bull's first win under new team principal Laurent Mekies (after Christian Horner's dismissal), overtaking Piastri to claim the sprint victory and reaffirm his commitment to the team under its new leadership. Championship standings: - Driver standings: McLaren duo Oscar Piastri (≈234 pts) leads, followed by Lando Norris (≈226 pts), with Verstappen in 3rd (≈165–173 pts). - Constructors: McLaren leads the standings convincingly with ~460 points; Red Bull is currently 4th on ~172 points, trailing McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes. Red Bull's early season technical setbacks and leadership transition have challenged their dominance, though Verstappen's performance continues to be a beacon amid the turbulence. The team is now focused on upgrades to the RB21 and adapting to Mekies' more technical leadership philosophy. Real Madrid Announces New First Team Transfer

Spanish soccer giant Real Madrid announced a first team transfer through its official website and social media account on X at the turn of a new month. 'Real Madrid C. F. and Como 1907 have reached an agreement for the transfer of our player Jacobo Ramon,' a statement on the matter began. Madrid explained how Jacobo arrived at the club at the age of eight when he joined its La Fabrica academy. Since then, he became a regular fixture in youth teams before being promoted to the Castilla reserve outfit last season. A part of the U18 team that won the treble in 2022/2023, he made his debut with Carlo Ancelotti's first team in 2025, though unfortunately no major silverware was forthcoming in that campaign with the Italian now replaced by Xabi Alonso. For Spain's U19's, though, Ramon won the Euros in 2024, and he was thanked by Madrid for his 'commitment and dedication during the time he has belonged to Real Madrid', which wished 'him and his family all the best in this new stage of his life'. Madrid didn't give any details of the transfer in its correspondence. According to MARCA, though, Como has agreed to pay €2.5 million for 50% of his rights, with Madrid reserving the right to buy him back at the end of the next upcoming three seasons. We've been here before with Nico Paz, who Como, managed by FC Barcelona and Arsenal legend Cesc Fabregas, snapped up and took from the Spanish capital in similar circumstances last summer. As part of a $6.7 million (€6 million) agreement, Madrid also retained 50% of his rights of the Argentine midfield playmaker according to MARCA, and there have already been rumors that Los Blancos will bring him back to the Bernabeu. Doing this, and being a La Fabrica product that is sold elsewhere but then returns to Madrid after kicking on, is known as completing the 'Carvajal route', after legendary right back Dani Carvajal did it more than a decade ago via Bayer Leverkusen. It now remains to be seen who if either of them, follows his footsteps between Paz and Ramon. It was going to be difficult for Ramon to get minutes at Real Madrid With the likes of Dean Huijsen, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba in his way, it was always going to be hard for Ramon to get minutes at Real Madrid making a transfer a wise move for his development.
