Minister sees appointment of first woman chief judge of Sabah, Sarawak as ‘legacy'
This was highlighted by the Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah in her congratulatory message yesterday.
'On behalf of the state government and the women of Sarawak, I would like to congratulate the new Chief Justice of High Court of Sabah and Sarawak, the first woman to hold the position.
'She makes us proud, and with such achievement, she is creating a legacy, a benchmark of excellence for others to follow,' said Fatimah, also Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Women chief.
Azizah, born in Sibu on Jan 9, 1962.
She graduated with a degree in law from the University of Otago, New Zealand.
The 63-year-old Azizah took over the post from fellow Sibu native, Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, who retired on July 24.
On Monday, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, presented the instrument of appointment to Azizah during the ceremony held at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur.
Also appointed was Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, 62, as the Chief Justice of Malaysia.
Both Wan Ahmad Farid and Azizah were former Court of Appeal judges prior to their respective promotions.
His Majesty also presented instruments of appointment to Datuk Abu Bakar Jais as the President of the Court of Appeal, followed by the appointment of eight Court of Appeal Judges and 14 High Court Judges.
Wan Ahmad Farid has been appointed as the 17th Chief Justice of Malaysia, succeeding Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who retired on July 2.
Abu Bakar, 63, meanwhile, is filling the vacancy of President of the Court of Appeal following the retirement of Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim on July 3.

13MP: RM2b flood mitigation works in Kuching to start early next year, says Fadillah
KUCHING, Aug 2 — A large-scale RM2 billion flood mitigation project in Kuching City is set to be tendered this year, with physical implementation expected to begin next year, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said the project comprises three main components — the construction of a canal, a bridge, and a new barrage at Sungai Salak — aimed at controlling water overflow and preventing saltwater intrusion from the sea during high tides. 'Two initial packages of the project have already been approved under the Fifth Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), although they do not include the construction of the barrage. 'For the full project, now under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), it will involve all three packages including the barrage and is expected to be tendered this year. Physical implementation is anticipated to commence next year. 'This is the largest allocation under 13MP hoped for by Sarawak,' he said when speaking to reporters after officiating the opening of the HE Clinic Kuching branch here today. Fadillah explained that the barrage will be built at the end of Sungai Salak to prevent saltwater intrusion and to control high tides by closing the barrage gates when necessary. Commenting on the 13MP announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Thursday, he said this is among the projects to be implemented under the plan. He also noted that several other infrastructure projects will continue under 13MP, such as the extension of the Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah, the Trans Borneo project in Sarawak, and the Sabah-Sarawak Link Road. 'There are also other infrastructure projects that will proceed under 13MP, including the Pan Borneo Highway extension in Sabah, the Trans Borneo project in Sarawak, and the Sabah-Sarawak Link Road, all of which have already been allocated funding. 'In addition, development in border areas between Malaysia and Indonesia, and Malaysia and Brunei, will also be prioritised, including upgrading Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complexes, road networks, and other supporting facilities,' he added. Fadillah, who is also Petra Jaya MP, said several other mitigation projects, such as erosion control in Sibu, Miri, and several coastal areas, have been identified, with details to be announced once next year's budget estimates are finalised. Meanwhile, various infrastructure and public facility projects involving flood mitigation and improved road accessibility are among the people-centric initiatives under 13MP for the 2026–2030 period. During the tabling in the Dewan Rakyat on July 31, Anwar stated that RM20 billion has been allocated to implement 103 Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) projects to reduce the risks and impacts of such disasters. Among the RTB projects to be implemented are those at Sungai Langat and Sungai Buloh in Selangor; Sungai Golok in Kelantan; Sungai Gemencheh in Negeri Sembilan; Sungai Baru in Melaka; the Johor and Muar River Basins in Johor; the Pahang River Basin; and Kuching City. — The Borneo Post

KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today paid tribute to his late wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang, during the state's 2025 Women's Day celebration. He said her quiet wisdom and graceful presence had left a lasting impact on his life and leadership. Abang Johari shared that Juma'ani played a key role behind the scenes, often offering subtle but meaningful advice that shaped him over the years. "She was never one to correct me in public. If she had something to say, she would wait until we were alone—usually in the car on the way home," he said. He recalled a moment after a formal dinner when she gently reminded him about proper etiquette. "In the car, she told me, 'Bang (referring to Abang Johari), next time don't stand up so quickly. "Look to your left and right first. We've already had our dessert, but others are just being served. "When we get up, everyone else follows, and they might miss their dessert." He said they were frequently invited to official functions, particularly dinners, and on that occasion, his early departure had unintentionally triggered others to follow suit. The celebration, held at the new state assembly complex, recognised the vital role of women in Sarawak's development. Abang Johari said women play a significant part across all sectors—including government administration, the economy and society. "They are not only mothers but are also raising children who will one day take on important roles," he said. He said that many senior positions in state departments and agencies are now held by women and expressed his appreciation for their readiness to embrace technological change. Also present at the event was Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, who said Women's Day is a recognition of the important contributions women have made in shaping culture, society and the future. "It reminds us of the powerful role of women in nation-building and the creation of lasting legacies for future generations," she said. 13MP: Pan Borneo, SSLR, Trans Borneo Highway completion top priority, says Works Minister
In a statement today, Nanta says this aligns with the federal government's push for equitable development across all regions. – Bernama photo KUCHING (Aug 2): The Works Ministry is prioritising the completion of the Pan Borneo Highway, Sarawak–Sabah Link Road (SSLR), and Trans Borneo Highway as key infrastructure projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), assures Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. In a statement today, Nanta said this aligns with the federal government's push for equitable development across all regions. 'The ministry is committed to completing the Pan Borneo Highway Project in Sabah and Sarawak within the 13MP period, in addition to continuing the construction of the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) and the Trans Borneo Highway as the main drivers of Borneo integration,' he said in response to the 13MP tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Parliament on July 31. The SSLR will provide a direct land connection between Sarawak and Sabah without passing through Brunei, while the Trans Borneo Highway will link Malaysia to Kalimantan, boosting cross-border trade and tourism. Nanta also revealed plans to expand rural road networks nationwide, targeting 2,800km of roads by 2030 – up from 2,436km in 2024. These include road upgrades in Felda and Felcra settlements, along with improvements in drainage, utilities, and other rural infrastructure. In Peninsular Malaysia, the ministry will continue upgrading the North–South Expressway (PLUS), including widening sections from Juru to Sungai Dua in Penang, and from Senai Utara to Machap in Johor, to support the Northern and Southern Corridors. Nanta added that completing the Lingkaran Tengah Utama (LTU) from Bentong to Kuala Krai remains a priority to drive development in the East Coast. To strengthen border connectivity, the ministry will upgrade the Rantau Panjang–Sungai Golok Bridge linking Kelantan and Thailand, and the Kalabakan–Simanggaris route connecting Sabah with Indonesia, he added. Nanta said the Works Ministry is embracing modern construction technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the Industrialised Building System (IBS) to boost project efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. Road safety will also be enhanced through smart infrastructure solutions, he said, including traffic lights, street lighting, and speed monitoring systems. In line with Malaysia's target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, Nanta said his ministry will promote the use of eco-friendly building materials and low-carbon infrastructure solutions. 'The 13MP is not just about building roads, bridges and buildings. It is actually building the people's hope and confidence in the country's future.
