Datuk Azizah Nawawi — Bernama photo KUCHING (July 29): Newly-appointed Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Datuk Azizah Nawawi's Sarawakian roots will give her a unique and invaluable understanding of the sensitivities, cultural diversity, and localised challenges faced by the people of Sarawak, particularly in relation to access to justice across the state. Advocates Association of Sarawak (AAS) president Gurvir Singh Sandhu made the remarks in a congratulatory message following Azizah's appointment, which took effect on Monday. He said AAS is confident that Sibu-born Azizah, 63, will approach these issues with insight, empathy, and dedication. 'We commend Her Ladyship's elevation to this high office, which reflects her distinguished judicial career and integrity. 'We are especially pleased to record that a fellow Sarawakian has been appointed to this esteemed role. The Advocates Association of Sarawak has long enjoyed a strong and collegial relationship with the office of the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak,' he said. Gurvir stated that under the stewardship of previous chief judges, including the recently retired Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, AAS has engaged in meaningful collaboration with the judiciary to strengthen the legal system and improve the administration of justice in Sarawak. He said AAS is looking forward to continuing this constructive relationship under Azizah's leadership. Minister sees appointment of first woman chief judge of Sabah, Sarawak as ‘legacy'

KUCHING (July 30): The appointment of Sarawak-born Datuk Azizah Nawawi as the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak is creating a legacy and also a benchmark of excellence for others to follow. This was highlighted by the Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah in her congratulatory message yesterday. 'On behalf of the state government and the women of Sarawak, I would like to congratulate the new Chief Justice of High Court of Sabah and Sarawak, the first woman to hold the position. 'She makes us proud, and with such achievement, she is creating a legacy, a benchmark of excellence for others to follow,' said Fatimah, also Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Women chief. Azizah, born in Sibu on Jan 9, 1962. She graduated with a degree in law from the University of Otago, New Zealand. The 63-year-old Azizah took over the post from fellow Sibu native, Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, who retired on July 24. On Monday, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, presented the instrument of appointment to Azizah during the ceremony held at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur. Also appointed was Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, 62, as the Chief Justice of Malaysia. Both Wan Ahmad Farid and Azizah were former Court of Appeal judges prior to their respective promotions. His Majesty also presented instruments of appointment to Datuk Abu Bakar Jais as the President of the Court of Appeal, followed by the appointment of eight Court of Appeal Judges and 14 High Court Judges. Wan Ahmad Farid has been appointed as the 17th Chief Justice of Malaysia, succeeding Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who retired on July 2. Abu Bakar, 63, meanwhile, is filling the vacancy of President of the Court of Appeal following the retirement of Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim on July 3.

GRS Women Chief Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun emphasised that Datuk Seri Hajiji's open statement, 'I have nothing to hide,' is clear evidence that he is a transparent leader who is not afraid to be investigated. 'We have full confidence in our chairman. He has firmly stated — 'Go ahead and investigate!' If he were guilty or afraid, he would not have dared to say such a thing. Therefore, GRS Women stands firmly behind Datuk Seri Hajiji,' she said. Azizah added that the statement reflects the sincerity and courage of a leader unafraid to face the truth. 'A leader who dares to say 'go ahead and investigate' is one who has nothing to hide. This reflects his confidence in the legal process and transparency in governance,' she added. GRS Women also called on all Sabahans not to be influenced by any attempts to disrupt the State's political stability and to continue showing support for a leadership that has brought significant progress to Sabah. 'We urge everyone to remain calm and place their trust in bold, honest and responsible leadership.
