Student killed in crash the day she was to take her BM oral test
According to Kosmo, Nurul Ain Nadhirah Zulkhairi, 17, a student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Datuk Haji Ahmad Badawi in Kepala Batas, was killed after the motorcycle she was riding pillion skidded following a burst tyre at 9.47pm.
Her close friend, Norsyafiqah Mawardah Che Kak, 17, said she received a phone call from a friend informing her of the accident at around 10pm.
"Although we were not in the same class, we were like sisters. I've known her since Form One and I'm close to her family.
"She stayed in Permatang Manggis while I'm in Pajak Song. She was supposed to sit for her BM oral test tomorrow (today)," she told Kosmo
Recalling their final moments together, Norsyafiqah said they last met on Monday night when they went out for dinner in Bertam, Kepala Batas.
"She persuaded me several times to go out with her that night. I was tired but I gave in and we rode our motorcycles out around 9pm.
Norsyafiqah described Nurul Ain as a kind-hearted person who loved helping others.
"If I was unwell, she would be the first to visit me at home. Her absence is deeply felt," she said while accompanying Nurul Ain's remains from the Forensic Department of Seberang Jaya Hospital (HSJ).
Nurul Ain was laid to rest at the Islamic cemetery of Masjid Al-Jamiul Badawi in Kepala Batas.
Meanwhile, Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris said the victim died after the motorcycle she was riding pillion with a 23-year-old man was involved in an accident on Monday night.
"Initial investigation showed that the motorcycle was travelling from Juru to Sungai Dua.
"When they reached the scene, the rear tyre suddenly burst, causing the rider to lose control and veer into the left lane of the road shoulder.
"The rider sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Seberang Jaya Hospital, while the pillion rider, a 17-year-old girl, was pronounced dead at the scene," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Kunak Jheains Religious Administrative Officer, Mohd Jeffery Hamad, said one of the men arrested is believed to be married and was found in a hotel room with a woman who is not his lawful wife or 'mahram'. The couples were aged between their 20s and 30s, while the married man was in his 40s. The operation, which took place between 10pm and midnight, targeted several locations identified as high-risk areas for immoral activities. Two hotel rooms were found to be occupied by unrelated couples in suspicious circumstances. 'This action is not intended purely to punish, but as a preventive measure to curb growing social issues, especially among youths and married individuals,' Mohd Jeffery told the Daily Express. He added that all individuals detained had been brought to the Kunak Jheains office for further action under the Sabah Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1995. Mohd Jeffery also called on the public to remain vigilant and assist the authorities by reporting any activities that contradict Islamic teachings. 'We will continue to conduct such operations regularly and more comprehensively to ensure that Kunak remains a peaceful district, free from vice, and preserves the moral integrity of its community,' he said. Nothing brings people together quite like good food. When travelling abroad, one of the top priorities on any itinerary is to sample as many local delicacies as possible. Each destination offers a rich variety of delicious dishes just waiting to be savoured by curious visitors. Even if you can't afford to travel, you can still enjoy these dishes, as many restaurants offer authentic cuisine from the countries they represent. However, it's always best to do some research beforehand, just like this UK couple, who were nearly scammed into trying fake Malaysian food by a street vendor. Here's what happened: Earlier this week, UK content creator couple Pat and Giulia posted a video of their recent trip to the northeast of London, where they visited several eateries, one of which served Malaysian cuisine. The first restaurant, Raya, did not disappoint. The pair, who have spent time in Malaysia and are in the process of moving here, described the food as being very similar to what they had tasted during their stay. However, during their day out, the couple decided to highlight a suspicious street vendor who claimed to sell authentic Malaysian dishes but didn't. While visiting Camden Lock Market, a location well known for its diverse food stalls and eateries, they stopped to check out the aforementioned suspicious 'Malaysian' vendor. Pat asked one of the hawkers which dish was a classic Malaysian option. The vendor responded with beef rendang and chilli chicken Manchurian, adding that it was a 'traditional curry from Malaysia'. Sceptical, the influencer decided to expose the stall by asking a question in Malay: 'Kamu dari mana?' (Where are you from?), to which the hawkers froze in silence, unable to respond. Pat asked again, 'Dari mana? Boleh cakap Bahasa Melayu?' (Where are you from? Can you speak Malay?), but once more, there was no reply from the vendors. He called out the vendors for not even being Malaysian and selling fake Malaysian dishes. The accused vendors defended themselves by claiming that their boss was from Malaysia, specifically, Penang. Unconvinced, the content creator continued speaking in Malay, telling them that he had lived in Malaysia and wouldn't be easily fooled by their false claims. 'What an embarrassment that was. They claimed to sell Malaysian food, but it wasn't,' he told viewers. 'I was getting a bit annoyed, like, 'How dare you say this is Malaysian food?''. The vlog has since gone viral, with many Malaysians praising the content creators for being able to spot fake Malaysian food after having lived in the country. Thailand, Cambodia exchange heavy artillery as fighting rages for a second day
SURIN, Thailand (Reuters) -Thailand and Cambodia exchanged heavy artillery on Friday as their worst fighting in more than a decade stretched for a second day, despite calls from the region and beyond for an immediate ceasefire in an escalating border conflict that has killed at least 15 people. Thailand's military reported clashes from before dawn in the Ubon Ratchathani and Surin provinces and said Cambodia had used artillery and Russian-made BM-21 rocket systems. Authorities said 100,000 people had been evacuated from conflict areas on the Thai side. "Cambodian forces have conducted sustained bombardment utilising heavy weapons, field artillery, and BM-21 rocket systems," the Thai military said in a statement. "Thai forces have responded with appropriate supporting fire in accordance with the tactical situation." Both sides blamed each other for starting the conflict on Thursday at a disputed border area, which quickly escalated from small arms fire to heavy shelling in at least six locations 209 km (130 miles) apart along a frontier where sovereignty has been disputedfor more than a century. Reuters journalists in Surin province reported hearing intermittent bursts of explosions on Friday, amid a heavy presence of armed Thai soldiers along roads and gas stations in the largely agrarian area. A Thai military convoy, including around a dozen trucks, armoured vehicles and tanks, cut across provincial roads ringed by paddy fields and moved toward the border. The fighting erupted on Thursday just hours after Thailand recalled its ambassadorto Phnom Penh the previous night and expelled Cambodia's envoy, in response to a second Thai soldier losing a limb to a landmine that Bangkok alleged had been laid recently by rival troops. Cambodia has dismissed that as baseless. DEATH TOLL RISES The Thai death toll had risen to 14 as of late Thursday, 13 of them civilians, according to the health ministry. It said 46 people were wounded, including 14 soldiers. Cambodia's national government has not provided details of any casualties or evacuations of civilians. A government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the latest clashes. Meth Meas Pheakdey, spokesperson for the provincial administration of Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province, said one civilian had been killed and five were wounded, with 1,500 families evacuated. Thailand had positioned six F-16 fighter jets on Thursday in a rare combat deployment, one of which was mobilised to strike a Cambodian military target, among measures Cambodia called "reckless and brutal military aggression". The United States, a long-time treaty ally of Thailand, called for an "immediate cessation of hostilities, protection of civilians and a peaceful resolution." Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, of which Thailand and Cambodia are members, said he had spoken to leaders of both countries and urged them to find a peaceful way out. "I welcome the positive signals and willingness shown by both Bangkok and Phnom Penh to consider this path forward. Malaysia stands ready to assist and facilitate this process in the spirit of ASEAN unity and shared responsibility," he said in a social media post late on Thursday.
