A virus nearly killed him; now, Brett White just shot 59 and won his first Americas title
This time it led to victory.
Brett White began Sunday's final round of the Commissionaires Ottawa Open seven shots behind leader Philip Barbaree Jr., who had carded 13-under 59 a day earlier at Eagle Creek Golf Club. Now it was White's turn to break 60, and while Barbaree closed in 70 to tie for 10th, White rocketed to 23 under, which earned him a spot in a three-man playoff with Danny Fisher and Nathan Franks.
White had made 10 birdies on his first 17 holes on Sunday before he drained a 63-foot eagle putt for the third 59 in PGA Tour Americas history.

Then in extras, White birdied the par-5 18th hole twice to seal his first career Americas title and jump to third in points.
White, 32, is eight years removed from nearly dying from viral encephalitis, which he contracted while a member of PGA Tour Latinoamerica. He spent three weeks in the hospital and had to relearn basic tasks, including talking and walking. His return to golf came about a year after his hospitalization, and he won the 2019 Nevada Open and 2020 Michigan Open as part of his comeback. He got through Korn Ferry Tour Q-School in 2021 to earn his KFT card for 2022, though he notched just two top-25s in 20 starts to lose his status.
'It's been a wild ride,' White told Golf Channel in 2021. 'Over a long journey, sometimes you go back and go, wow, I gotta be thankful for where I'm at. There was a point in the hospital where it was, hey, let's make sure you can be on your own; and then it was, OK, I want to be able to run around with my kids; then it was, let's play golf for fun; and it just kept on progressing. I've tried to get better every day, and I don't think I've stopped.'

Hard to believe but we have arrived at the final regular-season event on the PGA Tour's 2025 schedule. It's the Wyndham Championship, which will be played at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, once again. Why Derrick White wants to be like fellow Celtic Payton Pritchard this offseason
Despite all the question marks surrounding the Boston Celtics ahead of the 2025-26 season, guard Derrick White isn't one of them. The 2024 NBA champion is fresh off one of the best years of his career, yet he still understands that there are a few facets of his game that need refining. For help, he wants to look to Celtics teammate and reigning Sixth Man of the Year Payton Pritchard. On the first episode of White's new podcast, "White Noise," the Colorado native stressed that summer is the perfect time for improving — something he hopes to do regardless of how strong his last season with the C's was. "It's a big summer for me to get better and work on a lot of the things I got to work on, and I'm excited to get better," White emphasized. "And I'm excited for the next year." One craft White aims to hone is his ball handling, which is an area he knows Pritchard excels in based on all the videos of him dribbling in the garage like a madman. "I want to get my Payton Pritchard bag up," White said with a smile. "P's unbelievable...I'm going to have to get in the garage soon. I don't know if I got it like P like that, but I'm working, P." Although the Celtics' 2024-25 campaign went awry, White and Pritchard were reliable contributors. They both played in over 75 regular season games and notched career-highs on the same night, as White dropped 41 points during a win in early March over the Portland Trail Blazers while Pritchard recorded 43. With Celtics star Jayson Tatum out indefinitely next season, White and Pritchard will be more valuable to Boston than ever. Whether or not they can carry the Celtics alongside star Jaylen Brown remains to be seen, but there's no doubt they'll be ready to go when October arrives. If FSU football's defense is any good, Justin Cryer, Stefon Thompson must be really good
A position of intrigue for Florida State football this season sits at the heart of the defense. In defensive coordinator Tony White's new system, the linebacker room will be crucial to defensive success. It's a position that has been inconsistent in its production in recent seasons, which played its part in linebackers coach Randy Shannon exit as linebacker coach in the offseason. Former special teams coordinator and defensive ends coach John Papuchis is now taking over the linebacker coach role as the Seminoles hit the reset button. The Seminoles retained key players like Justin Cryer and Blake Nichelson and added transfers Elijah Herring, Caleb LaVallee and Stefon Thompson to the room. Thompson is an important figure, having spent time with White at both Syracuse and Nebraska, making him an on-field coach to help the defense get up to speed with the new 3-3-5. Last season, the Seminoles ranked 106th in the nation in rushing defense with 184.7 rush yards per game and allowed 7.41 pass yards per attempt, ranked bottom 10 in the nation, and a total of 201.2 passing yards per game. While neither stats are a sole indictment of the linebackers, inconsistency in performance from that group played its part in the 385.9 yards per game the team allowed opponents last season. GOOD OMEN? We simulated FSU's season in EA Sports College Football 26. Here's how it went With new reinforcement and a new system, players are key to the success of the lineabcekrs this season. Juice Cryer set to emerge as a leader, veteran presence Cryer gave the Seminoles a flicker of hope defensively last season, and he emerged as an outspoken leader for the group as the season progressed. While a leg injury against North Carolina cut his year short, Cryer is likely poised for a big season in White's defense as he enters his junior season. He appeared in 13 games in his freshman season and in nine games as a sophomore. He recorded 32 tackles and recovered one fumble prior to his injury last season, with his best game coming against Duke, where he recorded seven total tackles. In White's defense, Cryer will be moved around in both bringing pressure and coverage. With three linebackers in the traditional 3-3-5 scheme, Cryer could be lined up across the front seven of the defense and be given a more aggressive role after becoming one of the most consistent tacklers last year on a team that struggled to wrap opponents up. There will be a heavy rotation in the linebacker room, and expect Cryer to make an impact when he's on the field. Stefon Thompson brings knowledge, confidence in White's system A transfer that might be one of the most impactful this season, Thompson brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in college football, and importantly, with White's defensive schemes. In his career, the redshirt senior has recorded 199 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks while playing at both Syracuse and Nebraska. He had a 77.6 defensive grade from Pro Football Focus last season, which would have ranked him highest on FSU's roster last year, and he was a consistent tackler, something the Seminoles desperately needed more of. Thompson has one year of eligibility left and this could be his most important, and a chance for him to emerge as a veteran leader in the Seminoles' linebacker room.
