Nebraska coach Matt Rhule represented on CBS Sports' list of top head football coaches
Rhule and the program are looking for a bigger 2025 campaign after finishing last season 7-6. They won the Pinstripe Bowl, which was an achievement for the program, as they had not won a bowl game since 2016.
After finishing 5-7 in 2023 and 7-6 in 2024, the program looks to take a big leap, aided by freshmen and transfers on both sides of the football. Tom Fornelli broke down why he put Rhule in the 32nd spot.
"Rhule's Nebraska was able to cross a bowl game off the to-do list last year, but he still fell three spots in our rankings. After all, there's a difference between 6-6 bowl eligibility and 8-4, so you'll have to forgive some of our voters if they weren't overly impressed with Rhule's sophomore season in Lincoln."
Rhule is known for making third-year leaps in his previous stops at Temple and Baylor. Huskers could be poised to make the jump as well with a favorable schedule.

Iowa football QB receives underwhelming spot in CBS' Big Ten rankings
It's been a long decade for Iowa fans hoping to watch decent quarterback play. From Spencer Petras to Alex Padilla to Cade McNamara, it's been a plethora of swings and misses for the Hawkeyes at the position over the past five years. And now Mark Gronowski enters the fold, a transfer from South Dakota State that has everyone excited. While it's certainly fair to question how his play will translate from the FCS to the FBS level, most Iowa fans believe that Gronowski might be the answer at the quarterback position that they've been looking for. CBS Sports, on the other hand, isn't so high on Gronowski entering 2025. David Cobb of CBS Sports put together his ranking of every Big Ten quarterback heading into the 2025 college football season. Cobb's placement of Gronowski on the list is a lot lower than many Hawkeye fans would want or expect. Where is Mark Gronowski on CBS' Big Ten quarterbacks ranking? Cobb ultimately placed Gronowski at 12th in his ranking, meaning he thinks Gronowski will be in the bottom third of all quarterbacks in the conference this season. Gronowski led South Dakota State to consecutive FCS national titles while proving himself to be a dual-threat talent during a four-year stint as the starter. He's a highly decorated and grizzled veteran with a 49-6 career record, and he will be an automatic upgrade over what the Hawkeyes have trotted out at quarterback over the past several years. Limitations with the supporting cast and system will cap his production, but Gronowski will be a breath of fresh air for the program. - Cobb, CBS Sports Gronowski is ranked just ahead of Billy Edwards Jr. of Wisconsin and just behind Aidan Chiles of Michigan State. Drew Allar of Penn State is at the top of the list, while Drake Lindsey of Minnesota brings up the rear. While Iowa fans may not agree with this ranking from Cobb, he does make a solid point about the supporting cast around Gronowski. If the Hawkeyes want to achieve their goals this season, they'll need some skill position players to step up and elevate their production. Whether that's Reece Vander Zee, Addison Ostrenga, Kamari Moulton, or someone under the radar, it'll be critical for Iowa to have its supporting cast do everything they can to help Gronowski. Gronowski will get a chance to outperform his ranking when the 2025 season kicks off on Aug. 30 against Albany. Until then, questions will remain about his ability to excel at the FBS level. Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck believes Nebraska is ready for next step under Matt Rhule
As Nebraska football enters year three of the Matt Rhule era, other coaches around the Big Ten are starting to take notice. While speaking at Big Ten media days, Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck had nothing but nice things to say about the Huskers and believes Rhule is waking up a sleeping giant. "One of the most dangerous teams in the Big Ten is Nebraska. I know what Matt Rhule created at Temple. I know what he did at Baylor. I know what type of human being he is. He's awakening it, that's for sure." Rhule enters his third season at Nebraska with a record of 12-13. The head coach has a track record of his program taking a significant step forward in year three. While at Temple, Rhule went from 2-10 in his first season to 10-4 in year three. While at Baylor, he went from a 1-11 record in his first season to an 11-3 mark in year three. Fleck has had success against the Huskers since becoming the head coach of the Golden Gophers. He holds a record of 6-1 against the Cornhuskers, having won the last five games in the series. Minnesota will host Nebraska on October 17. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT. The Huskers will open the 2025 college football season on Thursday, August 28, when they face the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. CT. Contact/Follow us @CornhuskersWire on X (formerly Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Nebraska news, notes, and opinions.

CBS Sports ranks Michigan's Bryce Underwood in Big Ten's top QBs before his first game
He hasn't even played a real snap of college football just yet, or even named the starter, but CBS Sports already has Bryce Underwood among the Big Ten's best. Great things are expected for the former five-star and No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class. So much so that Underwood is thought to be a shoo-in for the starting quarterback job, even though head coach Sherrone Moore has said that decision has not yet been made. And even though Underwood could be a shell of his potential, consistent, standard play would help the Wolverines out greatly, considering the quarterback quandary of last year. Still, CBS Sports ranked all 18 Big Ten quarterbacks, and Underwood came in above the middle of the pack, despite having only the spring game and practice as his college experience thus far. 8. Bryce Underwood, Michigan It would be impossible for Michigan's quarterback play to be worse than it was last season. Considering Underwood draws comparisons to Cam Newton and Vince Young, the Wolverines might be right there with Iowa in terms of who in the Big Ten upgraded most at QB. Even the most highly touted true freshman quarterbacks take their lumps, though, and it would be unwise to expect Underwood to be anything close to a finished product out of the gate. If this were an upside ranking, he would be No. 1, but there will be potholes to navigate in 2025. If he does start, as expected, it will be interesting to see just how much Michigan feels comfortable unleashing him. Much of that is on Underwood being a quick study, and while he's gone up against an NFL-style defense coached by Wink Martindale in practice, there are other sharp defensive minds with schemes of their own that will work to confuse and perplex him throughout the year. But it's also not a given that he does struggle, even if that hesitancy has been the working theory. Michigan does face some tough teams, but if the run game is able to bear the load (which would be very Michigan), then Underwood might not be asked to do that much just yet -- which could help mitigate major errors while building consistency. Just ahead of Underwood is another phenom quarterback in last year's wunderkind recruit, Dylan Raiola of Nebraska. What is interesting is that Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin (who appeared in four games and had 27 snaps) is ranked No. 2, even though his statline was 4-for-12 for 84 yards and one touchdown -- so his ranking seems, not unlike Underwood, feels like a bit of a projection. Fall camp is set to begin for the Wolverines on Wednesday, while the season opener will take place on August 30.
