Dad acting like a child due to old age, ties with BJP had his nod: Anbumani

CHENNAI/VILLUPURAM: In perhaps the first open reproach against the recent actions of PMK founder S Ramadoss, party president Anbumani Ramadoss on Saturday said his father has become a child in the past five years due to old age.
According to party sources, Anbumani, who spoke candidly at a closed-door meeting of the party's social media functionaries in Sholinganallur, refuted his father's claims that the decision to ally with the BJP in 2024 Lok Sabha election was taken without his full knowledge.
'If Ayya had expressed a preference for joining the AIADMK-led alliance, I would have honoured that decision too,' Anbumani reportedly said, while stressing that the alliance with BJP was formed after Ramadoss's approval. Without taking names, he also accused three individuals of 'taking advantage' of his father at the moment for their personal gains and steering the party in the wrong direction by creating confusion.

'Break their legs': Odisha cop says words 'taken out of context' after video from Congress protest goes viral

In the aftermath of the Puri rath yatra stampede, Congress workers carried out a protest near Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi's house. During his protest, a senior officer was heard giving instructions to the police personnel, asking them to "break the legs" of the protestors. We are standing there [some distance away] to catch them. Whoever breaks a leg, come to me and take a reward," the cop said. The remark was given after Congress workers in Odisha protested against the death of three people in a stampede at the Puri Jaganath Rath Yatra. The opposition party launched a protest, accusing the BJP government of "crowd mismanagement and negligence." Cop clarifies remark, says words taken 'out of context' The police officer, identified as Bhubaneswar Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Narasingha Bhol, later said his words have been taken "out of context." "There is a place, time and context in everything. Where was it happening, when was it happening... If you see the video, I told the personnel that 'we are there to arrest them'," he told NDTV, adding that the order was given in case of any unruly protestors who breach the first barricade. "The order was to detain unruly protesters at the first barricade itself. However, if somebody breached the two barricades and went beyond them, then that person has already broken the law. He is part of an unlawful assembly. We are free to apply maximum force to stop unlawful assembly," he added.

West Bengal alleges Odisha has detained nearly 100 of its migrants claiming they are Bangladeshis

The West Bengal government has alleged that nearly 100 migrant workers from the state have been detained in Odisha and 'sent to detention centres' on suspicion of being Bangladeshis, The Indian Express reported on Monday. In May, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Odisha government launched a statewide operation to identify and deport undocumented Bangladeshi migrants living in the state. Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP and chairman of West Bengal's Migrant Welfare Board Samirul Islam has said that 'top administrative officials and police officers…have reached out to their counterparts in Odisha' regarding the alleged illegal detentions, the newspaper reported. 'But they are not releasing the poor migrant workers,' Islam was quoted as saying on Monday. 'What has happened is unconstitutional'. He added: 'They are Indian citizens and residents of Bengal. They have gone to Odisha for work. But they have been detained and labelled Bangaldeshis. They have been sent to the detention centre. We will bring them home'. The Rajya Sabha MP claimed that this trend is happening in 'state after state under BJP rule'. However, an unidentified Odisha government official told The Indian Express that 'no one is being detained at any police station'. The government is conducting verifications as part of a nationwide exercise in view of the recent developments in the neighbourhood, the official added. 'We are just verifying their identities and are also in touch with West Bengal government,' the newspaper quoted the official as saying. The development comes nearly two weeks after four men from West Bengal, who had been picked up by the Maharashtra Police and 'pushed' into Bangladesh, were brought back on June 15. The Murshidabad Police in West Bengal had presented proof of them being Indian citizens. Over the past month, Indian authorities have been pursuing a policy to push individuals claimed to be undocumented migrants into Bangladesh. India has pushed back more than 2,000 persons into Bangladesh since the country launched ' Operation Sindoor ', a military operation against terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The legality of the 'push back' policy has been debated in India and internationally. Experts have told Scroll that the policy violated India's obligations under international law and customary international law.

DK Shivakumar will become CM, replacing Siddaramaiah: MLA Iqbal Hussain

BENGALURU: Ramanagara Congress MLA Iqbal Hussain on Sunday said DCM DK Shivakumar will become CM, replacing Siddaramaiah, as per an agreement that was struck at the high command level soon after the party came to power in the state. 'When the decision was taken in New Delhi that day, Shivakumar and I were together. Then, senior leader Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge decided about leadership change after Siddaramaiah completes two-and-a-half years in office,' Hussain said in Ramanagara. He hit back at Siddaramaiah's son Dr Yathindra for commenting on Sunday that the high command has not instructed about any change in leadership. Mocking at Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna's statement that there would be a political revolution in the state after September, he said, 'Change is natural in politics. Those who deserve it will get power as discipline and commitment pay in Congress. There are no power centres in the government and the high command treats all classes and religions equally,' he said. 'They (Siddaramaiah camp) are asking for change, and it will happen. Everyone knows who fought and worked hard for the party,' he said, referring to Shivakumar's organisational skills. He likened Shivakumar-led Mekedatu Yatra to Rahul's Bharat Jodo Yatra. 'We don't believe in any speculation as the high command will give Shivakumar the opportunity at the right time. Everything will be decided in the next two to three months,' said Hussain.
