Khargone: A female monkey and her baby who had been creating ruckus at the residences of senior officers in Civil Lines area of Khargone district headquarters were rescued and later released in forest.
"For a long time, a female monkey and her baby were creating a ruckus at the residences of about 15 senior officers in Civil Lines. Sometimes they would take away things or break plants and flowerpots, and even injure persons," Khargone DFO Ramesh Rathore told TOI.
"The monkeys would roam around bungalows of Collector, SP, DFO, and one or two other officers in the morning, and afterwards go to court premises via the old collectorate. People would give them fruits and vegetables in vegetable market in front of municipality, and finally, they would rest in the campus," he said.
The DFO said that the monkeys troubled elderly members of SP Dharamraj Meena's family, and had attacked guard of Collector Bhavya Mittal, tore off his clothes, and injured him. "They even used to create ruckus in district court, and recently had entered the SDM office where they created chaos for a long time."

He said that he received written complaints about the monkey menace from judge and lawyers, and apart from this, the SP also informed him about the activities of the monkeys twice.
Rathore said that usually the work of catching animals in the municipal area is carried out by the municipality, but CMO expressed their inability to catch them. The DFO said that cages were put up on the premises twice for a long time, but the clever monkeys could not be caught.
After this, a rescue team from Indore was called in and they put up a cage on the premises of DFO bungalow and caught the female monkey. He said, "Troubled by the capture of its mother, the monkey became aggressive, and was tranquilised and caught."
Both of them were later released in the forests of Jam Gate in Mandleshwar area of Khargone district, the DFO said.

Partygoers prefer hydroponic marijuana from Thailand: DRI

1 2 Bhubaneswar: Hydroponic marijuana from Thailand, considered 'poor man's cocaine', has become a preferred choice for rave parties in Bhubaneswar due to its affordability and cocaine-like hallucinogenic effect, according to Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officers. DRI sleuths caught four flyers from Bangkok at the city airport with a total of 40kg of hydroponic marijuana on July 29 and Saturday. DRI officers said the hydroponic variant, which is grown without soil, contains 30% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) compared to 3% in regular marijuana. "The elevated THC content produces cocaine-like hallucinogenic effects, making it particularly attractive to party-goers. We are concerned about the growing trend and have intensified surveillance to curb its distribution in the city," a senior DRI officer told TOI on the condition of anonymity. DRI sleuths plan to bring the four arrested carriers on remand so that they can interrogate the accused and obtain details about their Odisha conduit, peddlers and the modus operandi being followed to distribute the drugs to consumers. "We have identified some persons in the Laxmi Sagar area, and they have a network of peddlers. Regarding places in Bangkok where the marijuana is processed, we have overseas personnel who are on the job to trace those locations. There should be awareness among people about the health hazards of the hydroponic marijuana that is available for use in parties. We will also take local help to catch small-time peddlers," the DRI officer added. The agency, through police assistance, may keep a watch on parties. Officers also said that whenever marijuana smuggling was detected in airports and other places in the recent past, its origin was traced to Bangkok. Passengers carrying the contraband managed to escape mechanical scanners and security personnel in Thailand. "Whether the handlers in Bangkok are in collusion with airport staff there is not yet ascertained," he said. From interrogation of the accused,, it will also be ascertained who the main traders in Bangkok and Bhubaneswar are and which hotels they mostly prefer to stay in. From parliament debates to prison labour: Prajwal to get Rs 540 a month

Bengaluru: Just last year, Prajwal Revanna drew a basic salary of Rs 1.2 lakh a month plus various allowances until he was disqualified as an MP in April 2024. Today, as a life prisoner (no. 15528) lodged in Bengaluru Central Prison, his earnings will not exceed Rs 540 a month, the standard pay fixed for convicts who work eight-hour shifts and six days a week. As per prison rules, all convicts are eligible to work and earn, except Sundays. But Prajwal is yet to be assigned any job, prison officials told TOI. "New convicts usually begin with unskilled work, like assisting in the bakery or doing basic tailoring. After a year, if found suitable, they may be promoted to skilled labour roles such as weaving or smithy work," a senior prison source said. As the former Lok Sabha member from Hassan was shifted to the convict barrack Friday, he will be given time until Monday to choose his work. "Every Monday, new convicts are allocated their tasks. Regardless of the nature of work, the fixed wage is Rs 540 per month," the official added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Another senior official said, "Any inmate sentenced to rigorous imprisonment should compulsorily work as per the prison guidelines. After basic routine, breakfast is served. "It's a rotating menu through the week: veg pulao on Sunday, tomato bath on Monday, chitranna on Tuesday, poha on Wednesday, puliyogare on Thursday, upma on Friday, and vangibhath on Saturday," a source said. Lunch is served between 11.30am and noon, and all inmates must return to their barracks by 6.30pm. Both lunch and dinner consist of chapatis, ragi balls, sambar, white rice, and buttermilk. Tuesdays, convicts receive an egg. Mutton is served on the first and third Friday of every month, and chicken on the second and fourth Saturday. Prajwal, like others, will be allowed to make two phone calls a week, each lasting a maximum of 10 minutes. He can also meet family or friends once a week, as per prison visitation rules. Wage arrears hit convicts While Prajwal awaits his job assignment, thousands of other convicts already at work have not been paid for over a year. "Across the state, more than 1,500 convicts are engaged in various tasks, but their wages — amounting to about Rs 3 crore — are pending," a source in the prison department said. The state has around 14,500 inmates spread across eight central prisons and several district jails. However, only up to 15% of them can be assigned work under existing rules. "The govt has assured us that the dues will be released soon," the official added. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !
