Meta and Yandex violating privacy of Android users to track data: Report

The Hindu04-06-2025
A group of researchers have found that Meta and Russia-based search engine Yandex are bypassing privacy protections to track Android user data too closely. A report by Ars Technica has cited the findings saying that the tracking code embedded by Meta and Yandex into websites was sending unique identifiers from web browsing data to localhost ports using native apps installed on a device.
'These native Android apps receive browsers' metadata, cookies and commands from the Meta Pixel and Yandex Metrica scripts embedded on thousands of websites,' the researchers noted. 'These JavaScripts load on users' mobile browsers and silently connect with native apps running on the same device through localhost sockets.'
The native apps were able to link mobile browsing sessions and web cookies to user identities since they handle device identifiers like the Android Advertising ID and user identities on Facebook and Instagram.
Sandboxing is one of the primary ways to secure user data by isolating processes and preventing them from interacting with the OS or any other apps installed. Yandex and Meta started breaking the sandbox and bypassing it in 2017 and last September respectively.
The researchers also found that the trackers, Meta Pixel and Yandex Metrica were targeting only Android users which unlike iOS has lesser restrictions in the app store as well as on the background executions of mobile apps.
Google responded to the report saying they are investigating the violations and that the companies used 'capabilities present in many browsers across iOS and Android in unintended ways that blatantly violate our security and privacy principles.'

Google introduces Android Canary for early developer testing

Google recently launched their Android Canary release channel to replace their traditional developer previews. Only those with Pixel smartphones and tablets are likely to get access to Google's upcoming features on Android smartphones. The company's Android Beta for Pixel programme has long allowed interested users to sign up and receive access to in-development builds of major new releases, like Android 16, months before they are released publicly. For those who like early previews, Google announced something even better – Android Canary. The initial Android Canary update offers a goes beyond tweaks to user interface, however, there are many yet to be known features which will be revealed much later. The Android Canary is intended for developers who wish to explore and test the earliest pre-released Android APIs and potential changes. In addition to Google's automated testing, builds from the Google Platform Android Canary channel will briefly be tested by internal users. While testing Android Canary, users can expect bugs and breaking changes or modifications that could disrupt the compatibility of the software. These bleeding edge builds may not be suitable for someone who uses this platform on their primary device, testing it on a spare Pixel device is recommended. The existing Beta channel will run simultaneously to the Android Canary to make sure that the apps are both compatible with and take advantage of upcoming platform features. When it comes to issues, they will now be directly addressed by the Canary channel, through over-the-air (OTA) updates, you can now obtain a continuous, rolling stream of the most recent platform builds on your compatible Pixel device to the Canary release channel. In the early stages of proposed behaviour changes and new features, developers can test them out and offer feedback. There are possibilities that these modifications will not always appear in a stable Android release. Through the Beta programme, users can still test a more polished set of features that might be released shortly. Canary builds can also be used with Computer Interface to see whether any of the in-development features cause unexpected problems with your app, which will maximise the time we have to address your concerns. Although the Developer Preview programme has been an essential component of Google's release cycle, there were inherent limitations in its structure. Developer Previews needed to be manually flashed to devices each time the cycle restarted because they were not connected to a release channel. Earlier, previews were only accessible in the early stages of the cycle since they were linked to the upcoming official Android release. The preview track would terminate once a platform version entered the Beta stage, leaving features that showed promise but were not yet prepared for Beta without an official avenue for feedback.

Reliance Infrastructure plans fundraising initiative through equity, debt instruments

Reliance Infrastructure Limited has announced plans to raise long-term capital through multiple financial instruments, signaling a significant fundraising initiative as the company seeks to strengthen its financial position and fuel growth plans. The Mumbai-based infrastructure company has called a Board of Directors meeting for Wednesday, July 16, 2025, to deliberate on a comprehensive capital raising strategy. According to the filing, the meeting will "consider and approve raising of long term resources by issue of equity shares / equity linked securities, by way of qualified institutional placement or any other method and/or Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs), in one or more tranches/series, as may be permissible under applicable laws." The company is exploring several fundraising mechanisms including direct equity share issuance, equity-linked securities through qualified institutional placement methods, and Non-Convertible Debentures structured across multiple tranches and series. The filing indicates that the board will also be "seeking members' and other approval(s), as the Board may deem appropriate," suggesting that depending on the scale and nature of the fundraising, shareholder approval through special resolutions may be required. The choice of qualified institutional placement as one of the methods suggests the company is targeting institutional investors, which typically indicates confidence in the company's fundamentals and growth prospects. The timing of this announcement is significant as it comes ahead of the Q1 FY2026 financial results, which will provide investors with insights into the company's current financial performance and justify the need for additional capital. The company's stock performance and investor response will likely depend on the clarity and attractiveness of the fundraising terms once announced. Earlier in the week, the company announced that its credit rating has been upgraded by three notches by India Ratings and Research which has assigned it 'IND B/Stable/IND A4' rating from an earlier rating of 'IND D'. Reliance Infra shares have been in top form for the last one year, jumping by 97% during this period. In this year so far its returns have been to the tune of 18%, significantly higher than the headline indices Nifty and Sensex. Both Nifty and Sensex have seen an uptick of slightly over 3%.
