referendum, a movement and a moment that changed Irish society, did a tremendous amount to dismantle a good deal of homophobia in Ireland, and gave us a victory that inspired the world. It reflected a shift that had already occurred.
The result of that
referendum
is occasionally framed by those outside the LGBTQ+ community as something of a conclusion, a declaration that Ireland was now tolerant, and that the work was done – case closed. That's not how things work. Rights must be protected, and there will always be forces seeking to roll them back. Still, I'm a big fan of moving on. But it was a remarkable era. Reflecting a decade later, I find myself longing for the determined sense of potential the movement brought. I miss the feeling of optimism that was fostered on this island.
I wonder what could have happened had the political figures who basked in its glory held up their side of the bargain: that this was the beginning of a new time ushering in a new kind of society from the ashes of recession, where equality for all was possible, and where people could fulfil the dreams and desires they had for their lives. Some of those desires are so simple; safety, shelter, security.

The referendum was won because the LGBTQ+ community had already done the hard work. The movement is often misinterpreted as a campaign that took place in 2015. But in reality, it was years of activism, court hearings, conversations, debates, strategising, protests, meetings, fundraising, deliberative democracy structures, and building networks and a framework that would ultimately evolve into the referendum campaign. And before all of that, there was all the other work the LGBTQ+ community (and the intersecting feminist movement) had done, all the brave souls who came before us operating in a much more oppressive context alongside rare but vital allies. In time, the marriage equality campaign generated a blueprint which the abortion rights campaign would build upon. Today, some of those same networks – or evolutions of them – are being used in anti-racist work, and as part of the Palestine solidarity movement.

I think challenging and demanding times can make you feel very present. I can replay the day of the vote and the referendum result hour by hour. I remember every vivid scene, every conversation, every location. But what challenging times also do is prepare you for what is to come. You may think the challenge is all about that specific moment, but in many ways it's a form of training for something down the line you can barely anticipate.

At the outset of this movement, there were smatterings of people attempting to make the case that same-sex couples deserved rights. This case was made literally in the courts by
Katherine Zappone
and
Ann Louise Gilligan
. It was made by the small group of people in LGBT Noise, who consistently and persistently went to gay bars and clubs to speak to the community directly about the rights they were being denied, and didn't always find a receptive audience. For years, it was made in conversations within the LGBTQ+ community as we attempted to build a movement that – given the numbers at early demonstrations – felt at times like a pipe dream.
But what we had was determination. What we had was creativity. What we had was dedication. What we had was resilience. What we had was energy. What we had was a sense of civic engagement and culture of volunteerism and organising. What we had was an uplifting pride. What we had was a righteous anger, not rooted in grievance, but in the confidence of our authentic argument, and a rejection of the cynicism, and fear-based positions of those who opposed us. What we had was hope. More than anything, what we had was each other.

We live in a changed country and a changed world now. Homophobia and transphobia is a characteristic of the Irish ethno-nationalist movement – one that has spread hate, violence, fear and disinformation – as it is with the authoritarian movements around the world it borrows from. Bigotry, resentment and manufactured fears, particularly those aimed at trans people, have found new avenues and expressions. Recently, walking home from the cinema with my wife, a boy on the corner just a few streets from our house, saw us holding hands and said to our faces 'I f***ing hate gay people'. This is a contemporary experience of an old hate. The difference now is that most people in this country think expressing such hate is unacceptable. But that doesn't mean old hate can't find contemporary expressions, whether repackaged by older generations or taken up by younger ones.
The leap of trust LGBTQ+ people took in relying on solidarity to achieve equal marriage was as profound as the empathy and support that was offered. Ten years ago, when we came together, when empathy was expressed – when people who had no personal stake in the outcome of that referendum stood with the LGBTQ+ community – the movement became broad and porous. It offered multiple entry points and participation was encouraged in many different forms without judgment. That really was beautiful. And that beauty, whatever ugliness came before or after, I'll never forget. If we can tap into that again, who knows what kind of society we could be?

Economist calls for budget ‘prudence', as Central Bank governor suggests rethink is needed
'A lot of prudence' is needed in Budget 2026 , while there is a case for postponing recurrent spending and tax cuts until there is 'greater clarity' on the negative implications of the EU-US trade deal , a prominent economist has said. Dan O'Brien, the chief economist of the Institute of International and European Affairs , made the remarks while responding to comments from the Central Bank governor Gabriel Makhlouf suggesting the Government should rethink its approach to the October budget. In its summer economic statement last month the Government said a €9.4 billion tax and spending package will form the foundation of the upcoming budget. However, the Coalition warned at the time it may have to 'recalibrate' its strategy and reduce the size of the overall package if there is a 'deterioration in the tariff landscape' over the coming months. The Business Post reported on Sunday that Mr Makhlouf said Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe now has 'more certainly' for planning the budget with the level of tariffs on EU goods known. 'Hopefully the summer economic statement is not the budget, and hopefully, by the time he (Mr Donohoe) gets there, he will have reflected again on what the trade situation is telling us,' Mr Makhlouf said. He added: 'For an economy operating at full employment, we're adding more stimulus to the economy than it needs – and I would look again at what we're planning to do.' There's been a lot of giveaways [in recent budgets]. Clearly we had a general election last year.' He said there has been a 'big uptick in inflation' but this has 'come right back down again' and 'there isn't the justification for Government to be intervening to deal with every problem'. Mr O'Brien said the implications of the trade situation for the pharmaceutical sector are uncertain, relying on the 'whims of the US president who may just decide he doesn't like the pharmaceutical sector in Europe selling stuff to the US and he may do something more radical'. He added: 'So there's a lot of uncertainty here, and I think we need a lot of prudence in this budget.' Asked about potential tax choices in the budget, Mr O'Brien argued there is 'no economic justification' for the Government's intention to reduce the VAT rate for the hospitality sector. 'One might strongly make the case that both recurrent spending and tax cuts maybe need to be postponed until we get greater clarity as to the negative implications of the trade deal and the extent to which it effects particularly the pharmaceutical sector and how that feeds into corporation tax revenues,' Mr O'Brien added. There's more to Irish history than eight centuries of British oppression and failed uprisings
A man from Meath conquered more land in India – more quickly – than Napoleon conquered in all of Europe. Yet Richard Wellesley is almost forgotten. An Irish woman, Teresa Ball, helped – from her home in Rathfarnham – to educate thousands of Catholic girls in countries from Canada to India. And a Catholic from Tipperary witnessed a famine eviction as a child, fought the Fenians in Canada as a British officer, but openly advocated for Irish Home Rule. William Butler wrote best-sellers, effectively invented Canada's 'Mounties' and almost prevented the Boer War. Yet most of us have never heard of him. Too often, Irish history can feel like 'eight centuries of British oppression, punctuated by the odd, failed uprising'. But behind that are far more surprising, interesting characters who reveal Ireland's complex status in a world shaped by European empires. The implications for our sense of national identity have real-world significance. Ireland had a ringside seat for the UK's Brexit vote, which boiled down to a simplistic, binary question: 'Do you feel European or not?' A similar question dominated Scotland's independence referendum: 'Do you feel Scottish or British?' Such questions force everyone into one of two opposing camps. Even if your side wins, huge numbers of your compatriots feel alienated, turning electoral politics into a confrontational, zero-sum arena. Instead of focusing on fixing hospitals, the British Tories, and Scottish SNP lost their way in repeatedly relitigating these purity tests, until voters soured on both. READ MORE Our debates about a United Ireland tend to focus on logistical questions. What flag would we use? What national anthem? How much would it cost? (Anywhere from €3 billion to €20 billion, depending on which economic analysis you read.) But if we want to avoid the chaos of Brexit Britain, we need to confront the identity question. What makes us feel Irish? What is our national story, in the context of our long, troubled relationship with our neighbouring island? That was the division that split North from South a century ago. Whether we're moving towards a united Ireland or a shared island, these awkward corners of our history help us move past the old binary, reinforced by the Troubles, of 'Catholic-Irish-nationalist' and 'Protestant-British-unionist'. Many of the people we meet in Irish Imperial Lives, an RTÉ Radio 1 series and podcast I made with Kate O'Malley, shatter that dichotomy. Richard Wellesley was a Protestant, but both his wives were Catholic. His lifelong support for Catholic emancipation was so deep that it cost him the chance to be British prime minister in 1812. Ball, who founded the Loreto order, helped establish Catholic girls' schools across the empire, was embraced by Queen Victoria but frequently blocked by Catholic bishops. Butler served the empire with such distinction, from Canada to Africa, that he was knighted, and became Queen Victoria's aide-de-camp. Yet he was also friends with Parnell, and advocated Irish Home Rule. [ For a united Ireland to work messy compromises will be needed, but we can't gift Irish identity to the far-right Opens in new window ] Irish people fought against the British Empire from the New World, while others helped expand the British Empire but used their position to advocate for Ireland. One way to think about the latter group is to consider the Stripe founders, Patrick and John Collison from Limerick. You may not like the fact that 19th-century London – like Silicon Valley today – made decisions which shaped the wider world in profound ways. But you can still admire Irish people who, through their talent, tenacity and timing, achieved extraordinary things, without forgetting where they came from. What about the Irish Presbyterian Lambert Blair, who traded everything from women's shoes to enslaved human beings in the Dutch-controlled Caribbean? Or the Irish Catholic mercenary Peter Lacy, who led the imperial Russian army that captured Crimea in the 1730s – with disturbing resonances today? Whether we like it or not, all of these people are a part of Irish history. When we accept that, it becomes a lot harder to exclude unionists or Protestants or, frankly, anyone from our island's history. The world built by Europe's empires is still with us. Why do so many of Ireland's young people still choose to emigrate to Australia? We're EU citizens. We can take our pick of any climate that suits us, from Spain to Sweden. We can live and work, visa-free, in many of the world's happiest, most beautiful, and liveable cities – all a short plane ride from home. And yet, consistently, our young people move halfway around the world. And if it's not Australia, it's often Canada, the US or UK. Why? Because they speak English, and they've been welcoming Irish people for centuries ... both things directly linked to the British Empire. For argument's sake, imagine if the Battle of Kinsale had gone the other way. The Earls of Ulster and the Spanish forces could have carried the day, preventing the Ulster plantation and making Catholic Ireland an outpost of the Spanish empire. We might all speak Spanish. Consider how radically different Ireland would be today if our strongest ties were with Spain, Mexico and Latin America – and we were adrift from the anglosphere of the UK, US and Australia. Whether we like it or not, our past shapes our present in profound ways. Ending of electricity credits will bite hard this winter
It is the August bank holiday weekend – the height of meteorological summer, and of political summer. The Dáil is not sitting, Cabinet is not meeting, and aside from committees reporting on Government legislation on the triple lock and Occupied Territories Bill last week, the agenda was deathly quiet. In the midst of that August haze, it can be hard to believe that the weather will ever turn again. Inevitably, however, it will – this is as true of politics as it is of climate. And there are signs that as the days shorten and the weather turns, the old truism will be borne out – winter will be much trickier for the Government. Earlier this week, figures released to Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan showed that 301,000 households are now in arrears on their electricity bills. One of the significant things about this is that the arrears figures appear to be creeping up even when the weather is mild – and doing so as the last of the previous government's electricity credits wash out of the system. It seems likely that the credits suppressed a rate of electricity arrears that would otherwise have emerged given the still-elevated cost of power. The electricity credits were a blunt, expensive – and politically expedient – tool to address a genuine crisis. In September 2022, as the country faced its first post-Ukraine invasion winter (and budget), a senior government figure texted me to say that modelling suggested energy bills over the winter would be more like mortgage payments. Cabinet had been warned earlier that week that household bills could hit €6,000 annually. That was both economically and politically unsustainable, and the Coalition applied €600 worth of electricity credits to household bills between November that year and March 2023, costing a little over €1.2 billion. From April 2022 until February this year, households got nine payments worth a total of €1,500 – costing almost €3 billion. It was a stark summation of two things: the scale of the crisis and the political willingness to cure – or at least ameliorate – it with exchequer spending. READ MORE Both those things have changed in important but different ways. Firstly, the cost of electricity has come down in line with reductions in wholesale gas prices – the main input into Irish electricity prices. However, it has not returned to pre-crisis levels, and energy boffins who understand these things expect that utility bills this winter will be about the same as last winter (or maybe even a little higher). The second important change is that while the situation has improved, the Coalition has resolved to turn off the tap completely on electricity credits. From a policy point of view, given the economic backdrop and the constant refrain over State spending, there is a strong case to be made for this – and it is one that has been made early and often by Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe and Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers . Both have been backed up by their respective party leaders. But the politics of this has a hard edge: the simple fact is that voters up and down the country are likely to be exposed to a more expensive winter in real terms than they have been for many years. As universal once-off payments are rolled up, they will get a delayed – but real – shock. This also comes against the backdrop of ever-higher grocery costs. More expensive turkey and electricity bills (or colder homes) beckon for the festive period. That does not sound like a recipe for a happy electorate. It is often said that inflation kills governments, but the last coalition was returned to power at least in part because it insulated households to an extraordinary degree as the election beckoned – not just the electricity credits, but recall two double payments of child benefit, either side of polling day. Against this backdrop, there is a compelling logic to intervene to protect lower-income households – and this is something I would expect the Government to do in the budget. Ditto extending the lower VAT rate on electricity bills. Meanwhile, Minister for Energy Darragh O'Brien has convened an energy affordability task force, which is to sketch out support measures for Budget 2026 some time soon. The Government's actions suggest it knows it has an issue – but all the steps the Coalition is minded to take – targeted measures, structural reforms, investment in the grid – are either partial or much more long-term in nature. They lack the raw retail politics of the once-off payments. Meanwhile, the Opposition's actions are equally as instructive. Before the Dáil rose for summer, the cost of living seemed to be the issue they most routinely raised in the Dáil. During his meeting with UK prime minister Keir Starmer this week, US president Donald Trump riffed on how politics is pretty simple, at the end of the day. The politician who wins out, he opined, is generally the one that cuts taxes the most, who keeps you out of wars – and 'the one who gives you the lowest energy prices'. Say what you like about him, he is an operator with extraordinary instincts for the prevailing politics of the day. It is possible that higher energy costs – and the price of the low-carbon transition – will become baked into economies in the time ahead. That suggests that energy politics may become a feature of the system here and elsewhere, not a passing storm.
