MP warns officials over delay in single site approvals

Time of India01-06-2025
Udupi: Complaints about issues with the single site plan approvals from the Udupi Urban Development Authority (UUDA) are increasingly being reported by the general public, causing difficulties in constructing homes and buildings.
After receiving several complaints from people, Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Kota Shrinivas Poojary directed officials of the authority to resolve the issue within 15 days.
He spoke while presiding over a meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner's Office in Manipal on Saturday, to discuss the problems related to the single site and Form 9/11. After the distribution of 9/11 was reassigned from gram panchayats to the authority, there were unnecessary delays, causing applicants to become frustrated.
Despite govt directives to approve single site plans leaving six metres from the road edge, thousands of files remained pending due to the authority's negligence.
Officials must resolve all files within 15 days, the MP said.
If local urban bodies propose that road expansions are not possible as per the directive, the govt order to permit only 3.5m must be followed. The interference of middlemen in the authority should be immediately stopped, and the troubles faced by the general public should be alleviated, he suggested.

Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna said that over 11,000 applications for single site approvals are pending with the urban development authority in the district, and immediate action should be taken for their urgent clearance. Kundapur MLA Kiran Kumar Kodgi said that applicants from distant areas like Kundapur and Byndoor are facing difficulties visiting the authority daily. Officials should promptly respond, understanding the common people's issues, he said.
Kaup MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty stated that the single site approval issue is tarnishing the reputation of the district administration and public representatives. Immediate corrective measures should be taken, he advised. Abid Gadyal, additional deputy commissioner, directed officials not to cause inconvenience to applicants visiting offices from faraway places.
He also directed officials to approve applications with gram panchayat recommendations without delay.
Udupi City Municipal Council president Prabhakara Poojary, commissioner Mahesh J, UUDA chairman Dinakar Heroor, and others were present.

Pakistan urges global social media platforms to block accounts run by banned militant groups

Pakistan on Friday urged global social media companies to take action to block hundreds of accounts allegedly run by outlawed militant groups that Islamabad claims spread propaganda and glorify insurgents in the South Asian country. According to Pakistan's Deputy Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry , groups such as the Pakistani Taliban and the separatist Balochistan Liberation Army - banned by the Pakistani authorities and also designated as terrorist groups by the United States - have been using X, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Telegram to promote violence in Pakistan. The accounts were being used to incite violence and spread hate speech, Malik said. Live Events There was no immediate response from any of the social media platforms to Pakistan's request. Pakistan itself has in recent years blocked access to X, primarily to curb criticism from supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan but also voices of other dissenters. The plea comes amid a surge in violence across Pakistan, much of it blamed on the two militant groups, as well as the Islamic State group. The Pakistani Taliban are allies but a separate militant group from the Afghan Taliban. However, the Taliban takeover of neighbouring Afghanistan in 2021 has emboldened the TTP. Militant groups also heavily rely on social media platforms to claim responsibility for attacks against security forces and civilians in Pakistan.

Health Insight Undo In a post in Hindi on X, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the death of many innocent children due to the collapse of the roof of a government school in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, is a very painful and shameful incident. "The government which cannot repair the roofs of the schools of our children, despite complaints, for the future of the country, shows big dreams of 'Viksit Bharat'," he said. Live Events According to a news report from the previous day, water in a school run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was so much that the teachers themselves had to take the nursery children to a safe place, he said. Today, the news has come that the building of a school in Jodhpur has become so dilapidated that the children are forced to study under a neem tree, he said. "The BJP, which boasts a lot about development, has ruined the country. Bridge collapses, train accidents, cracks in newly built roads, statues of great personalities getting damaged after inauguration - all these have become common," he alleged. "The attention of the BJP is focused on only one thing - hunger for power!" Kharge said. Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi also lashed out at the BJP over the incident. "It is extremely saddening and worrying that several innocent children died and many others were injured when the roof of a government school collapsed in Jhalawar, Rajasthan," he said on X. "According to media reports, the government ignored the complaints about dilapidated schools, due to which these innocent children lost their lives. Most of these children belonged to the Bahujan Samaj - do their lives have no value for the BJP government?" Gandhi said. "There should be an impartial investigation of this incident and the culprits should be given the strictest punishment," he asserted. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said the news of the death of several innocent children and injuries to many due to the collapse of the roof of a school in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, is extremely saddening. "According to reports, serious negligence regarding the dilapidated building took the lives of the innocent children. The matter should be investigated immediately, and strict action should be taken against the culprits," she said. Slabs of concrete, bricks and stones were piled up high, and scores of people, including frantic parents and teachers, helped in the rescue effort, searching through the mounds of debris to pull out the children.

Voice from margins falls silent

Salimkumar's political and literary life stood against erasure—of tribes, castes and subaltern histories Dr Ajay S Shekhar Kunnath Manikan Salimkumar, a political and social activist from Moolamatam in Idukki, who dedicated his life first to the radical Left and later to the socio-political struggles of dalits and adivasis, passed away on June 29, 2025. A. His death comes at a time when Kerala's marginalised communities continue to face systemic exclusion due to the overrepresentation of oligarchy and the denial of fair political and social access. Nicknamed Kadutha, meaning 'the one who wears the hardest thing'—a reference to Vajrapani, the bearer of the diamond thunderbolt—Salim Kumar was born on March 10, 1949, near Thodupuzha in Idukki, a region that also produced literary figures like Narayan. He belonged to the Urali tribal community. His father, Manikan, died young and it was his stepfather who took him to school. His mother's name was Kotha. Just as Poykayilappachan is called Poyka, Kotha in ancient Damila contexts is also a name for Gotama the Buddha. Be it the Mala Arayar, Mannar, Palliyar, Muthuvar, Urali, Adiyar, Paniyar and Kanikar, the ancient inhabitants of Kerala, these community names and village (Uruperu) names deeply mark the cultural ties with the early Asokan enlightenment of the Cheraland called Kerala in Asokan edicts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Get Your Personalized IQ Certificate Today Try Now Undo Salimkumar entered political agitations in connection with the extremist Left. He was imprisoned for about a year and a half during the Emergency from 1975 onwards. Just as KK Kochu and his group burned the effigy of Adishankara in Vypeen in 1989, Salimkumar entered Dalit politics by burning Manusmriti in Vaikom, the battlefield of the 1806 Dalavakulam struggle. Salimkumar authored several influential works, including Reservation and the Politics of Consensus (2006), Dalit Ideology and Communalization (2008), Negritude (2012), Reservation from a Dalit Perspective (2018), Dalit Democratic Thought (2019), This is Hindu Fascism (2020) and The Subtle Levels of Racial Equality (2021). His autobiography, Kadutha, completed while he battled cancer, is expected to be published soon. He attempted to connect Marxism and class analysis with the anti-caste democratic struggles of the people at the bottom. However, within the context of hegemony of India's oligarchy, which erases anti-caste struggles, the economic determinism proved limited in addressing the politics of people historically denied all forms of capital and just democratic representation due to the overwhelming power and overrepresentation of elites. Orthodox Marxist concepts of base and superstructure, with their focus on economism, invisibilize the cultural, social, and historical realities of society and its people. Consequently, Salimkumar could not identify and articulate the ancient, enlightened and ethical legacies of his tribe and people within the economic class war paradigm in media, academia and both state and private institutional apparatuses. The democratic paradigm of justice in due and adequate representation of the unrepresented backward communities and minorities are not adequately addressed by such class-fixations that evades the crucial caste question and its immense exclusion. Salimkumar was unable to understand the pitfalls of economic criterion in reservations because he was unable to study Ambedkar and Gramsci on oligarchy. His generation, which went to Naxalism, had only Marx, Mao, and Engels in reference. The people did not even know about the new cultural Left. Ambedkar was also hidden in Gandhian mantras. Salimkumar also worked hard to assert the impractical dream and trap of sub-division that would eliminate the dalits and adivasis themselves by eliminating India's just and legal community representation system.
