From Hanamub to Hotto: Top-performing foreign players in 2024/2025 PSL season
Image: BackpagePix
THE pre-season player transfer window comes with performance analysis by numbers as teams look to offload and strengthen their arsenals for the upcoming season.
For foreign players, this is usually means a great deal, with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) having foreign-player quotas in place.
So, Independent Media looked at the best performing foreign nationals from the PSL's 2024/2025 Premiership season.
Boasting names like Peter Shalulile, Riaan Hanamub, Deon Hotto and Elmo Kambindu, it is fair to say that Namibia were yet again the best represented country outside South Africa in the past season.
However, not all Namibian players make our top five list of the best performing foreign nationals...
Riaan Hanamub (Defender, AmaZulu – Namibia)
The 30-year-old left fullback was yet again one of the best, if not the best, in his position in the previous season.
His closest competition comes from the Zimbabwean-born Divine Lunga, who plays in the same position for Mamelodi Sundowns.

However Lunga, only became a regular towards the end of the season, and as a result played only 10 league games.
Hanuman, though, was a regular for Usuthu, playing no less than 26 league games for the side that had at least three coaching changes.
Hanamub was a starter under Pablo Franco Martin, who in October was replaced by Vusumuzi Vilakazi and Arthur Zwane as co-coaches.
Hanamub continued to hold his own even after Vilakazi left Zwane as the sole head coach with about 10 games remaining to finish the season.
The Namibian recorded four assists to his name, proving to be an important cog in the team's attack as well. He remains an anchor for Usuthu, and in January, he was linked with a big move to Kaizer Chiefs.
Deon Hotto (Left wing-back, Orlando Pirates – Namibia)
Operating tirelessly with pace on the left flank from left back to left wing, Hotto is proving to be one of those age-defying players.
At 34, Hotto made 49 appearances for Pirates in all five competitions the Buccaneers participated in.
That includes 25 in the league and 14 Champions League games, where he produced six goals and eight assists.
He remains clubless after Pirates announced his release at the end of the season.
Peter Shalulile (Centre forward, Mamelodi Sundowns – Namibia)
Although his impact was way less than the season before, the 31-year-old Shalulile still shone for the Brazilians, scoring crucial goals when needed the most.
He made a total of 47 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals with two assists.
Lucas Ribeiro Costa (Second striker, Mamelodi Sundowns – Brazil)
By far the best performing player in the PSL for the season, the Brazilian has more numbers on his.
Playing 50 games in all competitions, he scored 21 goals and made 14 assists.
Ribeiro's influence is with the ball at his feet, as he is able to take on defenders with ease and open up space for his teammates to slot into scoring spaces – if he doesn't score himself.
However, the 26-year-old will need to work on his temper as he raked in 12 yellow cards as well.

Kaizer Chiefs: French-based Bafana star put on hold by Amakhosi
Bafana Bafana midfielder Lebogang Phiri has revealed that he held talks with Kaizer Chiefs before the pre-season break. The 30-year-old midfielder is currently with French Ligue 2 side Guingamp, but says he would be open to a move back to South Africa. Kaizer Chiefs already have several central midfielders on their roster, including Thabo Cele, who was signed from Europe in January. Although negotiations between Phiri and Kaizer Chiefs have slowed down, the Bafana star believes they can resume discussions and ultimately reach an agreement. 'Yes, Kaizer Chiefs did contact me and my representatives. We had small talks with Amakhosi, but I think since they were going to prepare for their pre-season in the Netherlands, the talks stalled a bit,' Phiri told Sunday World . 'But hopefully in the upcoming days or weeks, our talks will resume, and we will come up with something,' he added. 'Should something work out, I will be here, but if not, I will go elsewhere and keep pushing.' Chiefs have already lost Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo last month. In the midfield, they might need a bit of experience should Thabo Cele get injured. Phiri spent all his playing career in Europe and might not be an instant success if he decides to move to the PSL. Another Bafana midfielder who Kaizer Chiefs looked at is Siphephelo Sithole. The move failed to materialise with Amakhosi having to settle for Siphesihle Ndlovu. It remains to be seen if the Glamour Boys can add more quality players before the Betway Premiership starts next month. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Chiefs news: Top-rated striker slipping away away, defender drama
Kaizer Chiefs' pursuit of Nigeria's Etiosa Ighodaro remains in muddy waters as the player continues to weigh up his options. 'There's been a lot of talk about Ighodaro joining Chiefs, but the reports suggesting he has signed are inaccurate,' an insider revealed. 'He is still assessing his options both locally and abroad. Nothing has been concluded. AmaKhosi head coach Nasreddine Nabi has been vocal about his transfer demands from the club. 'I wouldn't be honest if say that I'm gonna stay if the club doesn't allow me to get all the tools to succeed next season because they have promised, and myself, I have promised the fans that I want to build a successful team that will compete in every competition to win trophies,' Nabi told SuperSportafter winning the Nedbank Cup final, ending Kaizer Chiefs' ten-year trophy drought. 'That's the condition for me to stay [at Chiefs] because I don't feel that I want to go through what I went through this season.' Kaizer Chiefs have won one of their five pre-season fixtures, raising alarm bells from fans to club legends. The latter relates to Tsepo Masilela, who has been vocal about his displeasure in left-back Nkhanyiso Shinga. 'To be honest, when I look at Shinga, interesting player, but defensively, there's been question marks, in my opinion,' he said. 'Even the second goal (conceded against Twente), there's a couple of times (even) in the previous games, he got beaten in one-v-one situations.' 'Your primary job as a defender is to win those duels, to be on top of the winger – that's how you gain confidence. Listen, he's comfortable on the ball, that we can't argue.' 'But again, him inverting most of the time, I found it that it was dragging (Makabi) Lilepo to receive the ball too deep, more like a left-back. I couldn't understand what's the idea of him inverting that much.' Let us know by clicking on the comment tab below this article or by emailing info@ or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Kaizer Chiefs lose R40 million man for free, replacement found
Kaizer Chiefs appear to have parted ways with Edson Castillo, who was once reportedly valued at around R40 million. The 31-year-old Venezuelan international joined Amakhosi in 2023 and has since played 40 games, scoring five goals. Notably, he was not included in the squad that recently completed pre-season training in the Netherlands. According to Soccer Laduma , Kaizer Chiefs may have identified a young player to fill Castillo's role. Insiders have reported that Amakhosi has offered 20-year-old Thulani Mabaso a three-year contract, running from July 2025 to June 2028, with an additional one-year option that could extend his stay until 2029. 'He is the one who could feature more this season amongst those recently promoted and they are believed to have offered him a three-year contract with a one-year option. He has done very well in the pre-season and all the involved parties are happy with what's going on regarding his contract,' the insider told Soccer Laduma. A second source told the publication that Mabaso was viewed as a direct replacement for a Venezuelan international. 'They believe he can replace Castillo. The way he plays and the way he handles himself, he is ready for the senior team and can do a great job. That's why the club, together with the technical team, has agreed to offer him a long-term contract,' the second insider told the Siya crew. Last year, Soccer Laduma reported that North African teams were interested in Castillo however, Kaizer Chiefs put a R40 million price tag on the South American midfielder.
