The Tampa Bay Rays are on the edge of a playoff spot as the Major League Baseball season hits the All-Star break. Meanwhile, the sale of the franchise from owner Stu Sternberg to a group led by Patrick Zalupski is expected to be finalized in September, The Athletic reported Monday.

The sale of the Rays is expected to keep the team in the Tampa Bay area, with Rob Manfred saying that they are hopeful for the stadium to be ready for opening day next season.
The plans for a new stadium were set aside after Hurricane Milton ripped the roof off the Rays' home, forcing the team to play at Steinbrenner Field, the spring training home of the rival New York Yankees.
While the $1.7 billion sale has been agreed upon in principle, the final stretch for the deal will happen over the coming months. Sternberg has been fighting to get the Rays a new stadium for the last 20 years, and with plans falling through or just lacking support, the Rays' owner has opted to sell the team.
With a group in Orlando vying for a major league franchise, the choice to move forward with a Jacksonville group did not faze the group fighting for Major League Baseball in Orlando.
The Rays declined to comment to The Athletic about the sale, and as the final processes of the deal commence, the Rays will be fighting for their chance at October baseball in the second half.

Broncos roster: OL Marques Cox (No. 70) looks to fill gaps behind starters
Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie offensive lineman Marques Cox, No. 70. Before the Broncos: Cox (6-5, 305 pounds) played six years in college at left tackle, spending time at Northern Illinois (2019-22) and Kentucky (2023-24). After redshirting his freshman year, Cox started 10 of 12 games played on offense and special teams. In the 2020-shortened season, Cox started all six games. In 2021, Cox made All-MAC fourth team, starting all 14 games, and during that season, NIU ranked second in the nation with only 10 sacks allowed. In 2022, before transferring to Kentucky, Cox started four games before suffering a season-ending injury in a game against Kentucky. Cox was named to Phil Steele's 2021 All-MAC team. After transferring to the Wildcats, Cox started all 25 games, earning two Reese's Senior Bowl Watch List recognitions, as well as being named Preseason third-team All-SEC from Athlon and Preseason Fourth Team All-SEC by Phil Steele. Broncos tenure: Cox was signed by the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 NFL draft. He will make his Bronco debut during preseason next month. Chances to make the 53-man roster: Longshot. It remains to be seen if Cox will play primarily as a tackle or as a guard in the NFL. Denver might ask him to serve as a backup swing guard/tackle. The Yankees manager, who helmed the AL in Tuesday night's MLB All-Star game, left fans baffled at why he picked the Athletics' Brent Rooker, the Mariners' Randy Arozarena and the Rays' Jonathan Aranda for the tiebreaker swing-off, but he explained his rationale postgame.
