A vast majority of Bengaluru's private vehicle users, nearly 95%, are open to adopting public transport if last-mile connectivity issues are adequately addressed, according to a recent survey by ride-hailing platform Namma Yatri. The findings were released on Friday in a white paper titled 'MadeForBLR: Namma Mobility Blueprint 2030'(PTI Photo)
The findings were released on Friday in a white paper titled 'MadeForBLR: Namma Mobility Blueprint 2030', which lays out a comprehensive 10-point agenda aimed at transforming the city's mobility ecosystem by the end of this decade, Deccan Herald reported.

The blueprint sets ambitious targets: boosting the city's public transport share to 70%, halving average commute time and vehicular emissions, and significantly enhancing first- and last-mile connectivity.
'At present, the average commuter in Bengaluru spends nearly 117 hours annually stuck in traffic. This number needs to be cut by at least 50% by 2030,' the report stated according to DH.
To build its vision, the document draws from the successes of five international cities, Amsterdam, Singapore, Helsinki, Tokyo, and Shanghai, that have each overcome serious mobility hurdles.
What are the key survey insights:
53% of respondents want better connectivity between home and metro stations.
49% highlight the need for improved crowd management and commuter comfort.
48% prefer fewer mode switches during transit.
38% seek reduced wait times.
39% want clearer travel routes and schedule information.
The blueprint outlines a 10-point agenda to overhaul Bengaluru's mobility system by 2030. It calls for a citizen-driven movement promoting sustainable transport choices and urges active collaboration with employers and business parks to encourage greener commute options. Strengthening infrastructure for walking and cycling is highlighted alongside a push for excellence in public transport systems. The plan also advocates for a supportive regulatory framework to enable innovative mobility solutions, adoption of sustainable transportation technologies, and the development of open data systems to support real-time commuter information.

US trade talks to stick to terms agreed earlier

India and the United States are intensely engaged to conclude a mutually beneficial early trade deal by the end of this month, 'strictly' within the bilaterally agreed framework of March 29, irrespective of the ongoing political rhetoric and independent of their strategic relationships with other countries, people in the know said on Sunday. he two countries finalised the detailed terms of reference (ToR) to enter into negotiations of the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) on March 29 during their first physical round of talks in New Delhi. (PTI) It may be part of the negotiations that India and the US may purchase and sell more energy as an outcome of the deal. But the agreed framework does not proscribe either nation from purchasing oil and gas from any third country of its choice, they said, requesting anonymity. The two countries finalised the detailed terms of reference (ToR) to enter into negotiations of the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) on March 29 during their first physical round of talks in New Delhi. Later, on April 22, US Vice President JD Vance officially announced the finalisation of the ToR for bilateral 'trade negotiations' during his India visit, and called it 'a vital step toward a final deal' between the two nations in a post on X that day. ToR is a set of bilaterally agreed road map for BTA negotiations. Both sides have concluded five physical rounds of negotiations and several virtual discussions within that framework. In the process, the two sides have already reached some common ground, substantial enough to announce an interim deal, they said. 'We are engaged through virtual mode as on date and likely to iron out remaining differences when the American negotiating team visits India for the sixth physical round this month,' one of the people cited above said. The US negotiating team is expected to land in New Delhi on August 24 to participate in the sixth round of talks from August 25. According to the people, some concrete outcomes are expected after the successful conclusion of the sixth round towards the end of August, despite US President Donald Trump's recent statements and tariff actions against India. Trump on July 30 announced punitive tariffs on Indian goods through a post on Truth Social. The announcements involved 25% on Indian goods shipped to America and an unspecified levy for purchasing Russian oil. Trump's reaction was an outcome of India refusing to budge on retaining protections for its agriculture, dairy and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sectors from unfettered American imports. Another factor behind Trump's reaction was India importing almost one-third of its crude oil requirements from Russia. About that, Trump on July 31 said on Truth Social: 'I don't care what India does with Russia… They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.' According to the US Energy Information Administration's (EIA) country analysis updated on February 6, 2025, Russia was the primary source of India's crude oil and condensate imports in 2023, accounting for about 39% of its total imports, followed by Iraq (19%), Saudi Arabia (16%), United Arab Emirates (5%) and the US (4%). India imported 4.5 million barrels a day (b/d) of crude oil and condensate in 2023, it said. 'In 2022, after the United States and EU imposed sanctions on Russia, India began purchasing Russia's crude oil at a discount, increasing its imports more than sixfold to 740,000 b/d,' the report said. Energy hungry India, which is the world's third largest importer after the US and China, imports over 87% of the crude oil it processes. 'Economical and reliable energy supply is the top priority of India's energy security, and heavily discounted crude from Russia meets both the requirements. Our energy sourcing is diversified, involving 39 countries. We have recently increased energy imports from the US and this may go up further depending on commerciality. But our sourcing from Russia would not stop under any external pressure. We are not bound by any unilateral sanction as we follow the UN sanction,' a second person said. Energy security is India's key concern and the US is endowed with the natural resource. The proposed BTA may have some definite commitments for enhanced energy imports from the US, depending on the long-term commercial viability, the people mentioned above said. 'But the deal cannot and will not restrict India's freedom in pursuing its independent energy sourcing. We are buying crude oil from about 40 countries, including the US, the Middle East and Russia. And the policy of diversified sourcing will continue,' the first person said.

A step forward, but not far enough

While the Karnataka Platform Based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Ordinance, 2025, is a step forward towards basic social security cover, there are serious lacunae related to calculation of the welfare cess. The welfare ordinance specifies 'payout' as the basis parameter for calculation of the welfare cess. 'Payout' is defined as the 'final payment made by the aggregator/platform to the gig worker…'. It goes on to define the 'welfare fee' as ranging from 1% and 5% of the payout per transaction to the gig worker. This formulation raises a series of issues. First, the range of 1-5% is likely to tend towards the lower bound of 1%. For instance, while the Construction Workers Welfare Cess provided for 1-2% cess, across States, the actual cess collected was 1% of construction cost. Also Read | Karnataka Gig Workers Bill: What stayed and what changed Second, at the lower bound, this is a clear dilution of the provisions of cess under the Social Security Code of the Centre. The Code defines cess as 1-2% of turnover with a maximum cap of 5% of payment to workers. That means that a cess of 1% on turnover is the minimum. The 'payout', as defined in the Karnataka Bill, being the payment from the platform to the gig worker, is a part of and therefore less than the turnover of the platform. A cess of 1% on payout is therefore necessarily less than 1% cess on turnover of the platform and contravenes the Social Security Code. We could test this rate of cess against the financial results of Zomato. The company had an Adjusted Revenue of ₹7,790 crore, while the 'delivery and related charges' was ₹3,900 crore (Annual Report 2024). Therefore, even a 2% cess on payout would barely equal 1% of company turnover, the minimum provision for platform cess under the Code. Also Read | Domestic workers demand recognition, call for law similar to that of gig workers The trend among food delivery platforms is towards diversification into merchandising and own production. There is every possibility that in such situations, the payout as a ratio to turnover might decline further, with even the cess rate at 2% payout being less than 1% cess on turnover. From Zomato's example, we can calculate that at 5% cess on the payout, the additional cost to be borne by the customer on a purchase value of ₹100 is barely around 50 paise. Surely the customer would not grudge this additional cost for social security cover to the platform worker. The employer contribution from Zomato at this cess rate would still be less than a third of what garment manufacturers in the State contribute towards Employees' State Insurance and Employees' Provident Fund cover per worker. There is a further issue related to the ride-hail sector of platform work. With the entry of Namma Yatri in Bengaluru, the operations for the sector for autorickshaws has moved from a 'commission' model to a 'subscription' model. In essence, Namma Yatri does not charge a commission on its rides, passing on the entire payment by customers to the driver. Instead, the driver pays a fixed subscription to Namma Yatri that allows her/him to be onboarded with the platform for a fixed duration. This benefits the driver, as the per ride subscription cost generally works out much less than the per ride commission. Uber and Ola have followed this model introduced by Namma Yatri, for autorickshaw operations in Bengaluru. The payout in this model from the platform to the driver is zero. How will the Bill account for this? Will this mean that platform-based autorickshaw drivers will be excluded from it? EXPLAINED | What does the Karnataka Bill promise gig workers? A possible workaround could be that for all platform operations following a subscription model, the cess payment could be built into the customer fee, charging, say, 2% of the full transaction amount. The financial portal for this model of platform work could be designed to transfer the cess amount of each transaction to the Payment and Welfare Fee Verification System that forms part of the Bill. The quantum of payment at 2% is not so much as to inconvenience the customers taking a ride on these autorickshaws. The platforms in this case are unlikely to object, as they are merely called on to serve as intermediaries for the cess transaction. The platform sector is complex and a one-size-fits-all approach will only end in chaos. Cess rates will need to be calibrated to fit the average employment conditions in each sector, ensuring that some minimum standards of social security can be guaranteed. Land acquisition for mega steel plant to begin soon in Odishas Keonjhar: Majhi

Bhubaneswar/Keonjhar, Aug 3 (PTI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday said land acquisition for the proposed mega steel plant in Keonjhar district would begin soon because the company concerned has already deposited the required funds for the purpose. According to official sources, the mega steel project in the district will be set up in a joint venture between JSW Group and South Korean steel giant POSCO, with an initial production capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and an investment of over Rs 40,000 crore. The government has identified two land patches for the project, one near Taramakant and another at Patna. 'Keonjhar will get a mega steel plant, and preparation for this has already started. The process has moved two steps forward, and the company concerned has deposited necessary funds for the purpose," Majhi said after reviewing several development projects in the district. The chief minister said the establishment of the plant is expected to boost the mineral-rich district's economy and provide new employment opportunities for local youths. Majhi has taken it as a challenge to set up a mega steel mill in Keonjhar, as the district lacks large-scale industries, an official sai. The government has taken up several developmental projects, such as national highway expansion, and there is no dearth of funds for the development of Keonjhar, he said. After his arrival, Majhi chaired a district-level review meeting, met local MLAs and sought their cooperation for the district's development. He flagged off three new ambulances and a 'Maa Tarini's coconut collection vehicle', a unique initiative likely tied to the renowned Maa Tarini Temple in Ghatagaon, where coconuts are a popular offering.
