TOKYO - Japan's disbanding women's badminton doubles pair Chiharu Shida and Nami Matsuyama, the Paris Olympics bronze medalists, reached the semifinals at the Japan Open on Friday after edging past the South Korean pair of Kim Hye Jeong and Kong Hee Yong in three games.
Shida and Matsuyama, who on July 8 announced they will part ways after the world championships in the French capital next month, advanced at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium after coming from behind to win 19-21, 21-19, 21-18.
"I was intent on never backing off mentally," said Shida after she and her partner won three straight points from 18-18 in the decider to end a 1-hour, 26-minute encounter.
"We're getting better the more we play. It was our best match here."
Playing in their last tournament together on home soil, Matsuyama voiced her trust in her long-term partner as they reached the last four at the competition for the first time.
"I had the sense of security that if I don't make mistakes, Shida will get us points," she said. "We've finally overcome this wall. We might still be developing."
Shida, 28, plans to form a new women's doubles partnership with two-time Olympic mixed doubles bronze medalist Arisa Igarashi, while Matsuyama, 27, is considering moving into mixed doubles.

Swimming: Open water racer Kajimoto wins Japan's 1st medal at worlds

SINGAPORE (Kyodo) -- Ichika Kajimoto won Japan's first medal of the world aquatics championships in Singapore, taking bronze in the women's 5-kilometer open water swimming Friday. "I'm feeling both happiness and disbelief," said the 21-year-old, who is also scheduled to compete in three freestyle events in regular swimming beginning July 27. Australia's Moesha Johnson won the non-Olympic event on the eighth day of the championships, two days after topping the 10-km race. Italy's Ginevra Taddeucci settled for second place in both distances.

Figure skating: 2nd edition of Uno's ice show to begin in Nov.

TOKYO - Former Olympic figure skater Shoma Uno said Friday the second edition of his self-produced ice show will begin in November in Kyoto and go to four other places through January 2026. "Ice Brave 2" is scheduled to kick off with performances on Nov. 1-2 at Kyoto Aquarena before the show heads to Tokyo and Yamanashi Prefecture later that month. It will then wrap up in Shimane Prefecture in December and Miyagi Prefecture in January 2026. "It's not exactly the same, but it's not an all-new thing, either," said the two-time world champion who also earned Olympic silver in 2018 and bronze four years later. "I want to take good parts (from the first one) and show an improved one." The planned performers include Marin Honda and Rika Hongo. His former coach, Stephane Lambiel, will not take part this time as he will coaching elsewhere. The first series ended last Sunday in Niigata.
