Caitlin Clark expected to return for Fever against Valkyries after five-game absence
After missing the last five games, Caitlin Clark appears on the cusp of returning to the court for the Indiana Fever. Head coach Stephanie White told reporters on Tuesday that she expects her star point guard to be available against the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday night at home. "If there's no setbacks after today, I anticipate her being available," White said. Clark admitted it's been hard watching her team from the sideline, so she enjoyed a full practice on Monday with her teammates. "Yeah, I just think it's nice to get back out there and get into the flow of playing with my teammates again," she said. "It's going to be fun to get back out there hopefully and just feel things again." The question is what White will do in terms of Clark's minutes if she is indeed available on Tuesday night. Clark has noticed in the past she doesn't like minutes restrictions when she's healthy enough to play. However, she understands White has to do her job to make sure the Fever come away with the victory. "I don't know the type of minutes I'm going to get and what it will look like, but just compete and play hard," Clark said. "This is going to be a team that's moving constantly, so just be aware and active. Bring energy. It's hard sitting out for a few weeks, so I'm definitely excited to get back out there." Clark added that she hopes for a "decent amount" of minutes if she plays, preferably in the "upper-20s." "Depends on how I feel and how the game goes, and what the team needs as well," she said. The Fever have gone 3-2 in Clark's latest absence this season. She missed five games earlier in the year with a left quad strain. White discussed how her team has looked since Clark, who the offense usually runs through when she's on the court, has been sidelined. "First and foremost, our defensive energy and effort had been really good," she said. "Our mobility, our activity level, our ability to execute schemes, for the most part, had been really good. We've had defensive versatility, and I love offensively how the ball's moving. Multiple players getting touches, we're moving the ball side to side. We're getting high-percentage looks, and that's been a part of just conversations as 'C' gets back on the floor." In the nine games she has played this season, Clark is averaging 18.2 points, 8.9 assists and five rebounds per game. Chicago Sky Sends Clear Angel Reese Message After Play Against Mystics
Chicago Sky Sends Clear Angel Reese Message After Play Against Mystics originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tyler Marsh knows he needs all the help he can get as the Chicago Sky continue to play without Kamilla Cardoso. The standout center missed her fourth straight game Tuesday after participating in the AmeriCup with Brazil. Advertisement In her absence, second-year forward Angel Reese has stepped up in a big way. The 6-foot-3 LSU product entered Tuesday's game against the Washington Mystics on a tear, having posted five straight double-doubles. It took just one half and 17 minutes for Reese to notch her sixth consecutive double-double. She continued her strong play in the second half, highlighted by a big basket in the paint that fired up Sky fans and the team's social media. The Sky posted the video with the caption: 'THE SHOULDERS OK 5.' During this recent stretch, Reese has played more than 32 minutes in each game. Her biggest outing came on June 29 in Los Angeles, where she recorded 24 points and 16 rebounds. Advertisement When Cardoso does return, she'll be looking to build off her best game of the season. Dempsey Backs Pochettino As USMNT Legends Slam Coach For Gold Cup Collapse
Dempsey Backs Pochettino As USMNT Legends Slam Coach For Gold Cup Collapse originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Mauricio Pochettino lost his first final with the USMNT, falling 2–1 to Mexico in the Gold Cup championship match. Now, he's under fire, drawing criticism from several national team legends — but not Clint Dempsey. The former Fulham midfielder stood by the manager after the loss. Advertisement Despite mounting criticism from USMNT veterans, Dempsey has emerged as one of Pochettino's more vocal defenders this week. On the Men in Blazers podcast, where he covers the USMNT alongside Roger Bennett, Dempsey acknowledged the coach's difficult task, saying, 'He's being asked to build a house without a lot of tools,' and praised Pochettino for continuing to push forward despite limited resources. His opinion contrasts sharply with other USMNT legends, including Kasey Keller and Charlie Davies. 'What I haven't seen from Pochettino is a full commitment to the national team,' Keller said. 'I haven't seen a full commitment to the players, I haven't seen a full commitment to going and watching matches and truly being the guy to find out all those questions.' Charlie Davies went even further, pointing out the lack of depth on the wings — despite the presence of players like Christian Pulisic and Sergiño Dest, who were unavailable for the tournament. 'Where are the dribblers? Where are the wingers? Where are the guys with pace? Because when we talk about depth and changing the game, go back to John Tolkin coming in as a replacement for Tyler Adams in the Guatemala game — which nearly cost us that match. Nearly.' Davies said. Advertisement What's next for the USMNT? The U.S. is already qualified for the 2026 World Cup as one of the three host nations, alongside Mexico and Canada. With no qualifiers ahead, Pochettino will have some time to regroup before announcing the next squad for friendly matches against South Korea and Japan in September. These games will fall right at the start of the European club season, which begins in August. The calendar is tighter this year due to the Club World Cup and the recently concluded Gold Cup. That's part of the reason Pulisic and Dest were unavailable this summer. The Milan winger opted out of the Gold Cup, and Pochettino chose not to call up Dest as he continues recovering from an ACL injury.
