Lane Kiffin: College or NFL, I think Nick Saban will be back
But one of Saban's former assistants thinks the 73-year-old Saban will make his way back to a sideline at some point.
Speaking to reporters at SEC Media Days on Monday, current Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin was asked if he would hire Saban if his former boss wanted back in the game.
'He's not going to need me to hire him,' Kiffin said, via Sam Hutchens of the Mississippi Clarion Ledger. 'I don't think he's done. I think he'll be back. Whether that's college or NFL, I think he'll be back.'
Kiffin worked under Saban at Alabama from 2014-2016 as the program's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The two won a National Championship together to cap the 2015 season.
Saban was famously the Dolphins head coach from 2005-2006 before taking the Alabama job. His other NFL experience came as the Houston Oilers defensive backs coach from 1988-1898 and the Browns' defensive coordinator under Bill Belichick from 1991-1994.
Kiffin was the Raiders coach from 2007-2008, lasting just four games into his second season before he was fired.

Najee Harris injury update: RB set to report for Chargers camp
Chargers running back Najee Harris likely will begin training camp on the non-football injury list, general manager Joe Hortiz said Wednesday, after the running back suffered a minor eye injury during a fireworks incident on July 4. While the general manager wanted to save final judgment on Harris' availability until the prized free-agent acquisition could be seen in person by the Chargers staff, Hortiz didn't anticipate that Harris would be sidelined for long. 'We'll let him get himself ready and then he'll get out there,' Hortiz said. If he's your starter, okay, we're fine. We're fine. You're like the Seahawks fans are going through right now. But then also it's like, no, there's some frustrations and everything like, and even just ranking wise, I consider him kind of like 18 to 22, the starting quarterback right now, you know, like that kind of just feels right. And you say that because the other name that I was thinking of here was Tua. That was kind of the, you know, but just thinking that if you don't have a Darnold or Tua level quarterback, kind of feeling iffy, kind of feeling scary. And then there's times where you have a good team and then you're like, man, that's all we got there. Like, okay, yeah, he can get the job done, but is he really going to push us over the top? Is he? Quarterback is such a complicated discussion because it's just all the other impacts. Like if you just want league-wide, like the most average quarterback, like if you included backups and everything, it's like Jacoby. But I, I do, I'm going with Darnold for the starters. You're going to want more sometimes, but if you don't have a Sam Darnold level tier that can actually do some things when things are going well, you're going to always want more, and I feel like that's just the right threshold for Sam Darnold. Threshold for Sam Darnold. It's just weird to describe Sam Darnold as average because he's such a high low player that it's like, it's weird to just go, like, you are average when it comes down to it. Are average when it comes down to it. What causes so much discussion around Sam is like how you end up at the average result because you can pull these plays where he looks like Mahomes and then there are other plays where he looks like the version of Brian Fitzpatrick that came back to the Jets after holding out when he gained a bunch of weight, and you saw that guy. I love that you have these Jets Giants memories because you say them and then my brain just goes like it just gets rattled back into like that time period. But, uh, Sam will be the most frustrating way to get a C+. He gets that 2.5 GPA, but he never got a B on any assignment. It was all A's and F's, and then that's how he got to the 2.5 GPA.
