OIC Stresses Transport Connectivity as Key to Economic Growth Among Member States

Dr. Ahmad Kawesa Sengendo, Assistant Secretary General for Economic Affairs, in his intervention today during the Panel Session under the theme 'North–South Solutions in an East–West Oriented Global Trade System' at the Global Transport Connectivity Forum 2025, deliberated on the state of transport infrastructure in OIC Member States and outlined the efforts of the OIC towards developing transport infrastructure in Member States and enhancing connectivity among them.
Highlighting the synergy between trade and transport, he also emphasized that improved transport infrastructure and connectivity will further increase intra-OIC trade and tourism exchanges.
The Global Transport Connectivity Forum 2025 under the theme 'Seamless Connectivity, Limitless Possibilities', organized by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Turkiye with support from the World Bank, was inaugurated by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Türkiye, in Istanbul, Republic of Turkiye.
The three-day Forum aims to provide a unique platform for high-level policymakers, ministers, representatives of international organizations and international financial institutions, industry leaders, the private sector, and leading experts to address the evolving challenges and opportunities in international transport connectivity.
Some of the key topics being discussed include: Emerging Challenges for Global Connectivity; Global Trends and Emerging Dynamics in Global Connectivity; Unlocking Africa's Connectivity Potential; Connectivity of the Middle East with Central Asia and Europe; Innovative Solutions for Financing the Construction and Management of Transport Corridors; and The Power of Transport Corridors in Driving Development, among others.

Egypt in diplomatic push for Gaza truce, Iran-Israel de-escalation
Egypt's Foreign Minister on Monday urged a ceasefire in Gaza and continued de-escalation between Israel and Iran during separate phone calls with senior US and Iranian officials, the foreign ministry said. The calls, part of Egyptian efforts to reduce regional tensions, saw Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty speak with Steve Witkoff, the US Special Presidential Envoy for the Middle East, and separately with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. In his call with Witkoff, Abdelatty stressed the need to resume the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and secure the release of hostages and prisoners, a ministry statement said. This would serve as a prelude to a sustainable ceasefire and what the statement described as US President Donald Trump's vision for comprehensive peace in the Middle East. Abdelatty also emphasised the necessity of allowing humanitarian, relief and medical aid into the territory amid a sharp deterioration in humanitarian conditions. The minister affirmed the need to present a political horizon for the Palestinian issue that fulfils the aspirations of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state, which would help the region avoid repeated cycles of escalation and support regional stability. He noted that Egypt looked forward to hosting an international conference for early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza as soon as a ceasefire agreement is reached, in cooperation with the Palestinian government and the United Nations, and reviewed the contacts Egypt is making in this regard. In the call with his Iranian counterpart, Araghchi, Abdelatty stressed the importance of working to solidify the ceasefire between Iran and Israel. He pointed to the importance of combining efforts to achieve calm and avoid renewed escalation to support regional security, the statement said. The Egyptian minister told his Iranian counterpart of the importance of resuming negotiations on the Iranian nuclear file as soon as possible, describing it as the best way to build trust and reduce tensions through diplomacy. The ministry statement added that in the call with the US envoy, Abdelatty also affirmed Egypt's support for resuming negotiations on the Iranian nuclear programme and all efforts aimed at achieving security and stability in the Middle East.

Egypt pushes to reinforce Iran-Israel ceasefire, revive nuclear talks - Foreign Affairs
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a series of calls Monday with regional and international officials to strengthen the Iran-Israel ceasefire and reviving stalled negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme. In a call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Abdelatty urged steps to maintain the ceasefire and avoid renewed hostilities, calling for de-escalation to support regional security. He also pressed for a return to talks on Iran's nuclear file, describing diplomacy as the most effective way to rebuild trust and lower tensions. The call came days after US President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire, declaring an end to what he called 'the 12-day war' between Iran and Israel. Iran, however, has since expressed scepticism that Israel would honour the deal. Talks with IAEA chief Abdelatty also spoke with Rafael Mariano Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on Monday as part of Cairo's push to revive nuclear diplomacy. According to Egypt's Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty voiced support for the IAEA's role under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and stressed the need to preserve its credibility amid rising tensions. Grossi, for his part, praised Egypt's role in supporting dialogue and regional stability. He also welcomed Egypt's support for a peaceful resolution to the nuclear issue and a Middle East free of nuclear weapons. Iran began enriching uranium to 60 percent in 2021, far above the 3.67 percent limit set by the 2015 nuclear deal. Though still below weapons grade, the move brought Tehran closer to the 90 percent threshold needed for a bomb. The US exited the deal in 2018. US envoy discusses Gaza and Iran In a separate call, Abdelatty spoke with Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, focusing on both Gaza and Iran. On Iran, Abdelatty repeated calls for both Tehran and Tel Aviv to uphold the ceasefire and return to nuclear negotiations. On Gaza, he called for the immediate restoration of the truce, the release of hostages and detainees, and unimpeded humanitarian access amid a worsening crisis. More than 500 Palestinians were reportedly killed in May as crowds attempted to access aid from the Israeli-American Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Hundreds more were injured, and food shortages remain severe. Abdelatty also said Egypt hopes to host an international reconstruction conference once a ceasefire is in place, in coordination with the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the United Nations (UN). Support for Palestinian statehood On Sunday, Abdelatty held a separate call with Varsen Aghabekian, the Palestinian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. He reiterated Egypt's position: that only a political resolution leading to Palestinian statehood can prevent future cycles of violence. Since Israel launched its war on Gaza in October 2023, more than 56,000 Palestinians—primarily women and children—have been killed, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
