Three killed, one missing as flash flood wreaks havoc in Himachals Mandi
The fury of rain was so intense that gushing waters in Sukati nallahs (drains) flowing through the city swept huge mounds of debris which entered several locations in about five-kilometer area and the worst affected was Jail Road, Saini Mohalla and Zonal hospital area.
'Three people died, one sustained injuries while one woman is missing, Deputy Commissioner, Mandi, Apoorva Devgan told PTI on Tuesday, adding that rescue operations are in full swing and about 15-20 people have been rescued.
The Chandigarh-Manali National Highway has been closed at 4 Mile, 9 Mile and Dwada as the road stretches have been washed away.
The fresh disaster adding to the woes of the people and the administration came after a month of monsoon mayhem in the Mandi district in which 15 people died in Seraj, Nachan, Dharampur and Karsog Assembly constituencies on the night of June 30-July 1.
Leader of the Opposition and former chief minister Jai Ram Thakur and DC Mandi were on the spot.
Meanwhile, landslides triggered by incessant rains also blocked the Shimla-Mataur National Highway at Old Kangra Ghat, and reports of uprooting of trees and electricity have also poured from several parts of the state.
The Local Met office had issued an orange alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated areas of Kangra, Mandi and Kullu districts on Tuesday.
It also issued yellow warning of heavy rains at isolated places in Chamba, Shimla and Sirmaur districts on Tuesday, and Una, Kangra, Mandi and Kullu districts on Wednesday.
Since the onset of monsoon in the state on June 20 till the evening of July 28, Himachal Pradesh has suffered losses to the tune of Rs 1523 crore. So far 90 people have died and 35 have gone missing in rain-related incidents and 1320 houses have been fully or partially damaged in the state.
A total of 200 roads, including 121 in the disaster-hit Mandi district, were closed for vehicular traffic on Monday night and 62 power distribution transformers and 110 water supply schemes have also been affected across the state, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). Delhi receives intermittent rainfall; temperatures dip below normal
New Delhi, Jul 31 (PTI) The national capital received intermittent rain on Thursday under a cloudy sky, with similar weather expected to continue over the weekend, the weather office said. No warning or alert has been issued, so far, even though nearly 50 complaints related to waterlogging and tree falling have been reported to agencies. Delhi witnessed intermittent rainfall throughout Wednesday night, with more light to moderate showers expected later in the evening, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Thursday, the city's primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded 16.6 mm of rainfall. Other weather stations reported significantly higher figures, with Palam recording 79 mm, Aya Nagar 51.1 mm, Ridge 34.4 mm, and Lodhi Road 9.3 mm, IMD data showed. Rainfall was also reported across several parts of the city overnight. In the 24 hours leading up to 6.30 am on Thursday, central Delhi's Pusa station received 40 mm of rainfall, Sports Complex recorded 38 mm, Safdarjung 34 mm, Najafgarh 23.5 mm, Pragati Maidan 22.1 mm, KV Narayana 20.5 mm, Lodhi Road 18.5 mm, KV Janakpuri 18 mm, and Aya Nagar 13 mm. Approximately 20 calls were received at the PWD's flood control room regarding waterlogging on Thursday, officials said. These included areas such as Kapashera Red Light, Hamdard Nagar T-Point to Sangam Vihar, Seelampur Flyover, and others. Following cloudy skies and showers, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 29.9 degrees Celsius, which is 4.5 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature settled at 24.7 degrees Celsius, 1.1 degrees below the seasonal average, according to the IMD. Additionally, Delhi's monthly rainfall for July has surpassed the average for the month. So far, the city has received over 250 mm of rainfall, exceeding the normal mark of 209.7 mm, according to the IMD. The city has recorded a total of 14 rainy days this month. The air quality was categorised as satisfactory, with an AQI reading of 59 at 4 pm, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed. According to the CPCB, an AQI reading between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'. 291 roads closed in Himachal as rains continue
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Shimla, July 31 (PTI) A total of 291 roads, including the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway 21, were blocked for vehicular traffic in Himachal Pradesh following rains in the past few days. Meanwhile, the local MeT office has issued a yellow warning for heavy rains at isolated places for the next four days, officials said on Thursday. Out of the 291 roads, 171 roads were blocked in the disaster-hit Mandi district, followed by 76 in Kullu district, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). Around 416 power distribution transformers and 219 water supply schemes have also been affected across the state as of Thursday evening, the SEOC said. Meanwhile, light to moderate rains lashed parts of the state since Wednesday evening. Dharamshala received 54.4 mm of rain since Wednesday evening, followed by Murari Devi 52.4 mm, Kothi 49.1 mm, Sundernagar 41.7 mm, Gohar 40 mm, Sarahan 34 mm, Naina Devi 28.6 mm, Mandi 26.2 mm, Pandoh 26 mm, Baggi 25.8 mm, Jubbarhatti 24.4 mm and Slapper 24.1 mm. The MeT office has issued a yellow warning for heavy rains at isolated places in three to ten districts from Thursday till Monday. Haryana releases compensation of Rs 52 crore for crop damaged by rain, hail
Chandigarh: Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Thursday released a compensation amount of Rs 52.14 crore to 22,617 beneficiary farmers whose rabi crop was damaged due to hailstorm and heavy rain in 2025. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The compensation was calculated based on comprehensive crop damage data collected through a state govt-run portal, which was operational between Dec 2024 and Mar 2025. Farmers across the state registered their losses on the portal, following which assessments and verifications were carried out. During the launch of the Haryana revenue and disaster management department's website, Saini said through physical verification, about 57,485 acres were found eligible for compensation. The assessment covered 15 districts — Ambala, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Gurugram, Hisar, Jhajjar, Jind, Kaithal, Kurukshetra, Mahendragarh, Mewat, Palwal, Rewari, Rohtak, and Yamunanagar. The CM said Rewari received the highest compensation of Rs 19.92 crore. It was followed by Mahendergarh (Rs 10.7 crore), Jhajjar (Rs 8.3 crore), Gurugram (Rs 4.1 crore), Charkhi Dadri (Rs 3.7 crore), and Bhiwani (Rs 2.2 crore). Other districts received varying amounts based on their verified affected areas and registered farmers. This compensation aims to support farmers in recovering from losses caused by extreme weather conditions during rabi season 2025.
