ABC expected to axe Q+A in fresh round of cuts

The Guardian10-06-2025
ABC managing director Hugh Marks is expected to unveil his first tranche of changes at the public broadcaster on Wednesday morning, including a fresh round of redundancies and the axing of Q+A after 18 years.
The groundbreaking weekly flagship discussion program was launched in 2007 by executive producer Peter McEvoy and host Tony Jones and was highly influential in its early years.
Q+A is expected to be cut, according to a source briefed on the changes who asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorised to speak publicly. The ABC did not confirm the changes when contacted for comment.
ABC staff were warned of looming cuts on Tuesday by the journalists' union, the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA), which told ABC members of colleagues being called into meetings with managers 'regarding a restructure'.
The raft of changes comes just three months after Marks took over in March from David Anderson who was the managing director for six years.
Marks signalled earlier that he was reviewing whether the ABC needed to 'do everything' or could 'spend our resources more wisely on doing fewer things better'.
While there will be cuts and redundancies there are expected to be new projects including a new unit dedicated to documentaries, something which has been strongly backed by ABC chair Kim Williams.
In his first week Marks told staff he wanted ABC journalism, audio and video output to have 'a real and meaningful impact' and acknowledged earlier restructures when he said that 'change is exhausting'.
'We are and can continue to explore new content genres and formats,' Marks said. 'We are and will continue to find ways of connecting with audiences at times and in ways that Australians choose. We have the advantage that in exploring this changed world we can focus solely on serving the Australian audience unimpeded by commercial implications.'
The last round of redundancies was announced in June 2023 by Anderson and involved 100 job losses. But the biggest round in recent history was in 2017 when then-managing director Michelle Guthrie reorganised the ABC along genre lines and made some 200 roles redundant.
Q+A has been hosted by Patricia Karvelas since July 2023 when Stan Grant stood down.
The ABC appointed Grant the full-time host of the weekly flagship discussion program in August 2022, a year after Hamish Macdonald quit and was replaced by rotating hosts.
Williams and Marks have been busy making major changes behind the scenes, sources say. Some changes have already been made by Williams, including elevating ABC Radio to the executive team.
Williams reversed Anderson's decision to put radio and TV in one content division and moved it into a stand alone division in October.
The MEAA said members may be placed into 'redundancy pools or their roles may be made redundant'.
'The mismanagement of our ABC needs to end,' the MEAA said. 'ABC management are simultaneously wasting public money on limousines, and expensive lawyers while cutting staff jobs and pushing all budgetary risk onto low paid, insecure staff who work hard to hold the line on editorial standards.'
Hamish Macdonald, who now hosts Mornings on ABC Radio, replaced Jones in 2020 after the original host stepped down after 12 years in the seat.

Tyra Banks, 51, looks decades younger as she stuns in leather corset at Freakier Friday premiere in Sydney

Tyra Banks has barely changed since her days as a Victoria's Secret runway model. The 51-year-old, who is one of America's original supermodels, is now living in Australia, where she runs an ice cream store. The stunner was on the red carpet alongside Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in Sydney on Tuesday night, and was looking decades younger than her years. Tyra turned heads in a chocolate-toned ensemble including a leather corset that cinched in her waist. It was worn over the top of a flowing, satin gown that skimmed her famous figure and featured ruching at the bust. For makeup, Tyra chose a cool and natural tone with rosy blush and a muted nude lipstick. The stunner was on the red carpet alongside Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in Sydney on Tuesday night, and was looking decades younger than her years She completed the look by wearing her bob sleek and straightened, and added a pair of patent leather heels in a brown tone that matched her dress. Tyra recently revealed why she moved with her family to Sydney, Australia, last year - and what inspired her relocation across the world. Banks, who was born in California, has been living down under for close to two years with her son, York Banks Asla, nine, and partner, Louis Bélanger-Martin. The Life-Size actress opened up about her decision to move on while appearing as a guest co-host on Today With Jenna & Friends with Jenna Bush Hager. 'So I have this ice cream company, SMiZE and Dream,' she divulged to Hager, explaining that her products are being sold on cruises and airplanes. 'I was going to Australia a lot because we were making a lot of our ice cream there in a big facility doing our recipes, and I just fell in love with it,' she continued. Interestingly enough, the former America's Next Top Model creator revealed that Australia ranks among the top three countries that eat the most ice cream. The other two countries taking the lead are America and New Zealand. 'So I was like, "I'm happy here, and they love to eat some ice cream, so are we gonna do this, family?" And we did it!' Banks said simply about the move. During the show, Banks also filmed a 'morning in her life' video from Sydney for viewers. She started off her day by waking up at 6:30 am and making a cup of coffee before taking viewers on an adventure. 'Sydney has so many beautiful sights, but let me show you one of my favourite places to take my little boo boo, my son,' the Shake Ya Body singer shared. She then resumed filming from Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour. 'They have what we call a little mini waterpark, they have swings and stuff for kids,' Banks shared, as she showed off the gorgeous scene, with kids and parents running around in the background.

Clip of glam Sydney Sweeney expertly shooting targets goes viral as her ‘secret MAGA life' emerges after anti-woke ad

A CLIP of Sydney Sweeney blasting targets at a shooting range has gone viral - as she's adopted by the MAGA movement and praised by Trump. The video resurfaced after President Trump heaped praise on the actress's "anti-woke" American Eagle jeans advert and she was revealed to be a registered Republican. 9 A clip of Sydney Sweeney practicing at a firing range has resurfaced in light of the revelation of her Republican leanings Credit: instagram/@sydney_sweeney/ 9 Sydney had never revealed how she voted, though people are now seeing clues from over the years Credit: Instagram 9 Sydney Sweeney is the star of American Eagle's latest, controversial ad campaign Credit: American Eagle The clip from 2019 shows a younger Sydney expertly burying rounds into a series of human-shaped dummies at the firing range. She appears well-practiced, skilfully banging two bullets into each in quick succession without so much as a flinch. At the end, she flashes a smile to the camera and holsters the weapon. Since Sydney starred in the controversial American Eagle jeans ad, clues that point to her living a secret MAGA life have emerged. The 27-year-old grew up in a small, Catholic, Trump-supporting town in Washington with her father, mother and younger brother Trent - and has previously said she had a "religious" upbringing. After accepting her breakout Euphoria role, Sydney revealed she had been nervous about how her community would react. She told Stylecaster in 2021: "What's crazy - and this is going to sound really bad- is when I first got sent the audition, I was too nervous to go do it. "I grew up in a smaller town with my family, who are a little more conservative, and I was like: 'They're going to kill me if I do something like this.'" A surprise party she threw for her mom's 60th birthday drew considerable attention when pics were shared of the guests wearing MAGA-style hats and "Blue Lives Matter" shirts. And now, she has starred in the American Eagle ad which has seriously riled voices on the left, who claim it promotes a racial ideal, but delighted the right who hail it as the "end of woke advertising". Trump pours praise on Sydney Sweedy amid 'good jeans' American Eagle ad storm as her voter registration revealed The ad makes a play on the words "jeans" and "genes" - and the main tagline is "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans". It's been claimed that the promotion of Sydney's blonde hair and blue eye traits suggests they are superior to alternative genes. Sydney hasn't publicly commented on the furore stirred up by the ad, but made her first appearance at a screening of her upcoming film "Americana" on Monday. She was heckled by a fan who shouted: "Stop the ad, that is being racist," according to TMZ. 9 Sydney flashes a smile after smashing it at the firing range Credit: instagram/@sydney_sweeney/ 9 Sydney sweeney caused controversy by posting Maga-themed pics from from her mom's 60th Credit: Instagram 9 Sydney Sweeney is most famous for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus Credit: Instagram However, she got into her vehicle without responding. American Eagle defended its advertisement, but removed the video from its social media accounts. It then emerged over the weekend that the actress has been a registered Republican since June 2024 - and she soon received praise right from the top. President Trump was delighted when a reporter told him about Sydney's political leanings, and promptly declared that he "loves" her "fantastic" ad. He said on Sunday night: "That's one I wouldn't have known but I'm glad you told me that. 9 Trump's Truth Social post on Monday, where he doubled down on his support for Sydney Sweeney Credit: X 9 Sydney Sweeney was revealed to be a registered Republican since June 2024 Credit: Getty 9 The ad's tagline 'Sydney Sweeney had great jeans' ignited major controversy Credit: American Eagle 'If Sydney Sweeny is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.' Trump then doubled down on his enthusiastic support and cemented the American Eagle ad as a bastion of the "anti-woke" agenda. He declared in a Monday morning Truth Social post that the campaign is "the HOTTEST" and went on to slam "woke" companies like "stupid" Jaguar and Bud Light for their own advertising. Jaguar recently put out an ad with models dressed in brightly-coloured, flamboyant clothing - but no cars or the brand's logo. Trump insisted the British manufacturer, whose CEO resigned on last week, should have learned from Bug Light - which suffered a boycott and major losses after an advert featuring a transgender influencer. The President's conclusion: "Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be."

Lindsay Lohan shows off her line-free visage and trim pins in daring sheer frock alongside Jamie Lee Curtis at Freakier Friday premiere in Sydney

Lindsay Lohan arrived Down Under on Monday for the Sydney premiere of her new movie, Freakier Friday. And on Tuesday night, the American actress, 39, was looking fresh-faced and line-free as she stepped onto the red carpet alongside her co-star, Jamie Lee Curtis. Opting for a racy black evening gown with sheer skirting, Lindsay flashed her trim pins through the see-through fabric. She carried a $2,235 AUD gold Fortune Minaudiere bag in an unusual fortune cookie shape. For makeup, Lindsay chose a porcelain base with rosy blush and a soft pink lipstick, while wearing her blonde locks down in soft waves. The star finished her ensemble with a delicate diamond necklace and matching, dangling earrings. Jamie, 66, was also looking much younger than her 66 years as she posed beside Lindsay against the media wall. The veteran actress stunned in a semi-sheer maxi dress that skimmed her impressive figure. She added a pair of nude, suede heels and kept her accessories light, wearing a pair of glistening baguette earrings. For makeup, Jamie went for a clean look with lots of highlighter and a pink lip gloss, while wearing her trademark pixie haircut softly spiked. In 2003, Jamie Lee and Lindsay starred in the smash hit comedy, Freaky Friday. which sees the two characters switch bodies, with hilarity ensuing. Fans had long hoped for a sequel to the iconic comedy but had an agonising wait, as Freakier Friday is only now hitting cinemas - over two decades on from the original. Jamie Lee has revealed why there was such a long gap between the two releases as she admitted she has long had her eye on a follow-up movie. Appearing on The One Show, Jamie revealed they had to wait until Lindsay was old enough to have a teenage child for the sequel premise to work. For makeup, Lindsay chose a porcelain base with rosy blush and a soft pink lipstick 'The truth is that Lindsay had to be old enough to have a 15-year-old daughter, people would ask me about the movie over and over again,' she shared. 'And finally someone in Australia said, "well she is" and I was like "what do you mean?" because I know her as this young girl, so I don't know how old she is. 'Someone told me and I was, like, "Oh! Well maybe we can make the movie. Let's go!"' Lindsay was just 15 years old when she first portrayed Anna Coleman in Freaky Friday alongside Jamie Lee, who played her on-screen mother Tess Coleman. It follows the bickering mother and daughter after a Chinese restaurant fortune cookie mishap causes them to switch bodies, forcing them to live the other's life. Despite barely having been able to see eye-to-eye, the magical switch eventually allows them to see things from the other's point of view. The sequel will see the iconic pairing switch places once again, though this time there is quadruple chaos in store. Also turning heads at the premiere on Tuesday night was fitness influencer Tammy Hembrow who showed off her surgically-enhanced figure in a flowing white gown. Former reality star Bella Varelis chose a fun and flirty retro ensemble including a sheer, feathered top and boot-cut trousers. American actress Ione Skye stunned in a red mini dress as she made it a date night with her Aussie musician husband Ben Lee. Love Island Australia star Rachael Evren opted for all black, pairing her coat and mini skirt with black tights, over which she wore white socks and matching heels. Actor Ash Hodgkinson stood out from the pack in a blue ensemble consisting of a frayed, double denim. Freakier Friday hits Australian cinemas on August 7.
