"I think that's weird" - Kyrie Irving claims that Bill Gates owns the majority of the land and water in the United States
"I think that's weird" - Kyrie Irving claims that Bill Gates owns the majority of the land and water in the United States originally appeared on Basketball Network. Dallas Mavericks All-Star guard Kyrie Irving has been a very busy man hosting Twitch streams as of late. Ever since he got hurt, Irving has used the platform to speak out about his thoughts on various topics and issues. In recent weeks, Irving has made interesting comments about his tenure in Brooklyn, his relationship with Kevin Durant and James Harden, the disrespect for Kobe Bryant in the rankings and Stephen A. Smith not deserving of his $100 million contract from ESPN. Most recently, he revealed that Luka Doncic once dropped 24 points in 3 minutes versus Grant Williams in practice. Now, in a complete 180, Irving is claiming that Microsoft founder Bill Gates owns most of the land and water in the United States. "I still think that it's weird that the Gates family, Bill Gates, owns a lot of the land in North Dakota. I think that's weird. He owns majority of the water in the United States, I think that's weird. Whatever. To each his own. This is for information purpose only. But at the same time, when you go to the grocery store and you see some products that are on there that they spray with a bunch of sh–," said Irving. Gates is the largest private owner of farmland in the U.S. It's unclear what the complete context of Irving's statement was because that 30-second clip is the only one that's going around the internet. But as to his claim that Gates owns a lot of land in North Dakota, that is true because in 2022, Potato grower Campbell farms of North Dakota sold 2,100 acres of farmland for $13.5 million to a company called Red River Trust, which has ties to Gates. The deal became a subject of controversy, but Gates' company secured legal approval. As of July 2024, Gates was considered the largest private owner of farmland in the United States with 275,000 acres of property across more than a dozen states in the United States, not just in North Dakota. These land properties are used for growing agricultural products like potatoes, carrots, soybeans, and corn. Meanwhile, author Seamus Bruner provided the likely explanation for why Kyrie said that Bill also owns most of the water in the U.S. "When Gates buys tens of thousands of acres, he is not just buying the land — he is also buying the rights to water below ground. In addition to farms (and the irrigation) and fertilizer, Gates has been hunting for sizable interests in water and water treatment — a crucial component when seeking to control the agricultural industry," Bruner noted in Bill does not control the farmland in the U.S. However, while Gates is the largest private farmland owner in the country, his percentage of ownership of the total farmland in the United States is a mere 0.03 percent of the total 876.5 acres as of 2024. Three years ago, Gates also explained why he has been amassing farmland recently. "I own less than 1/4000 of the farmland in the U.S. I have invested in these farms to make them more productive and create more jobs. There isn't some grand scheme involved — in fact, all these decisions are made by a professional investment team," he said. To be clear, Irving said he only mentioned what he said for informative purposes. But if he was trying to insinuate anything by saying it's weird, all of Gates' transactions are legal, unless you want to come up with a conspiracy theory. But Kyrie left it at that, so let us, story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 29, 2025, where it first appeared.

'Still dirty': Tigers fans issue warning to Lachie Galvin for Bulldogs grudge match
Wests Tigers fans have promised to bring the heat when Lachie Galvin runs out for the first time against the club he ditched mid-season. But they risk being drowned out by the rabid Bulldogs Army. The 20-year-old playmaker will line-up against the Tigers at CommBank Stadium on Sunday afternoon and can expect a serve from the home crowd with every touch of the ball. David Craine is a lifelong Balmain/Wests Tigers fan and administers the 'Wests Tigers Will Never Die' Facebook page, which has more than 44,000 members. He predicts Galvin will cop a hostile reception from both fans and former teammates. "The fans are still dirty over him walking out and will let him know. They will boo him at every opportunity," Craine told Yahoo Sport Australia. "And I believe it won't just be the fans - the players will be filthy as well. "I've heard reports that the team want payback for what he said about Benji…basically saying he can't coach. These players are only there because they believe in Benji. They will want to send him (Galvin) a strong message." But for all the passion and anger Tigers fans will muster, Craine concedes they face a tough time being heard over the raucous Bulldogs Army. Canterbury's fan base is on the march and turning up in big numbers during the club's best season in a decade. RELATED: Storm ace lifts lid on wife detail after turning back on big-money switch Hunt responds after Slater's criticism of Broncos as NRL feat looms Knights extend Origin hero amid fan uproar over baffling saga Lachie Galvin already making an impression at the Bulldogs Galvin has won them over in recent weeks and can expect plenty of support from the blue and white corner. "I expect Dogs fans to be bigger and louder than our sobbing fans," Craine predicted. "Their fans are the most passionate and noisy in the game and will try to drown the Tigers fans out. But we won't back down and they won't back down. We'll both be doing what we can to give our side an edge. It's all set up for a really feisty afternoon with plenty at stake for both teams." Canterbury has kept Galvin out of the firing line this week, refusing to offer him up to media outlets for fear of heightening tensions. It's been left to teammates to speculate on how the rookie half will handle playing against the club he rejected two months ago. Halves partner Matt Burton said: "He'll just go to another level and get better from that (scrutiny). That won't faze him at all. "There's going to be a lot of talk, but whatever's in these four walls, we just stick together and we don't worry about that. It's like he's a 26-year-old in a 20-year-old's body. He's got that maturity about him."

Jonathan Smith provides injury update of Spartans on opening day of preseason fall camp
Head coach Jonathan Smith provides an injury update on the Spartans on the first day of fall camp In the words of Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith, the Spartans are starting fall preseason camp in a "solid" spot on the injury front. Michigan State opened up fall preseason camp on Tuesday, with the Spartans holding their first practice of the 2025 season. As part of fall camp opening, media was able to attend a brief portion of practice and have availability to ask questions to a number of players and Smith. One of the typically asked questions during this time of year is the injury status of the team, which Smith was able to provide a positive response. "I'd say solid," Smith said when asked about the overall team health of the Spartans. "Knock on wood, but we haven't came across the season-ending injury (or anything) to that extent. We definitely are being, I'll call it, smart with some guys in camp and we will ease them into it. But currently, we are feeling pretty solid." Now, preseason camp has just started so, of course, we are only dipping our toes into the injury front at this time. But, this is certainly reassuring knowing there aren't any offseason injuries that Smith and the Spartans were ready to announce on opening day of fall camp. This is a notable development as we get going on the 2025 season. Throughout fall camp, injuries will be something to monitor so stick with Spartans Wire for the latest updates. Hopefully, we don't have any news of any significant injuries before Michigan State takes the field on August 29 in the season opener against Western Michigan.
