Town set to gain new car park to ease congestion
A derelict site is set to be turned into a public car park to help reduce congestion in a Lincolnshire market town.
The location on Kesteven Street, Sleaford, has stood empty for several years after formerly serving as the town's ambulance station.
At a meeting on Thursday, North Kesteven District Council said it intended to redevelop it as a car park after it purchased the land.
The local authority said it hadn't yet determined how many spaces could be created at the site, but councillors said it could help to ease existing parking and congestion issues in the town centre.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, concerns had been raised about anti-social behaviour on the current site.
Businesses have recently been critical about a lack of parking in the redeveloped and pedestrianised Market Place in the town.
Parking at the new site on Kesteven Street would be free for up to one hour, £1.50 for three hours and £3.50 for any longer.
Parking at weekends, bank holidays and between 18:00-08:00 would be free, the authority said.
Councillor Ian Carrington said: "I'm pleased to see the charges at an affordable level.
"It's important to encourage visitors to market towns like Sleaford and provide ample parking in walking distance of the centre, but not gouge customers."

Leisure centre refits nearing 'ambitious' target
Two leisure centres in Lincoln are on course to reopen in time for the school summer holidays, a council leader has said, following what she described as "amazing" refits. Yarborough and Birchwood leisure centres closed suddenly on 3 April after Active Nation, the charity that ran them, ceased trading. Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) was appointed by the City of Lincoln Council in May as an interim operator for a period of two years. Council leader Naomi Tweddle said: "It's a really ambitious date, but we are trying to stick to it. It's imperative that we get people back in the leisure centres." She added: "I've always thought the leisure centres were important, but I think a spotlight was really shone on that when they were closed. "I'm just delighted that, fingers crossed, they will be open very soon. "They're going to be amazing, they've had a complete refit." The council said the refurbishment would include new fitness equipment and showers, a refit of the changing rooms and new flooring. Chris Ord, partnership manager at GLL, said people would be able to register their interest online for a membership, though the costs were yet to be finalised. "We see Yarborough and Birchwood as great opportunities – they're really good centres in the heart of Lincoln and we need to make sure we bring them back to life and get them back used by the community," he said. The organisation was still looking to recruit more lifeguards and fitness instructors, Mr Ord added. Lincolnshire schools are due to break up for summer on 23 July. At the time of the leisure centre closures, Active Nation, a charity based in Warwickshire, blamed "the ongoing utility crisis and the challenges it has created" for the decision to cease trading. The council said it had offered the charity a support package of almost £500,000 over two years, with conditions attached, but this had not been taken up. Faulty M62 bridge joints 'a surprise for everybody'
A National Highways manager has said newly fitted joints on a bridge that turned out to be faulty came as "a surprise for everybody". Drivers have faced more than two years of delays since repairs to the M62 Ouse Bridge, near Goole, started in March 2022. Eight damaged joints that took more than two years to fix now need to be replaced as a "precautionary measure". Phil Jepps, programme delivery manager at National Highways, said it was "difficult to say" when the bridge would be fixed and finally free from repairs. Mr Jepps told BBC Look North: "It's not what [I] or anyone else expected. "The joints were completed in October and in the early hours of the Monday morning a member of the public reported that part of the joint plate had been detached." Mr Jepps said the manufacturer and installer of the joints had visited the site and said it was "something that they've never seen before". "It is quite a surprise for everybody that this has actually happened," he added. He said the issue was being investigated thoroughly and that National Highways was working closely with the principal contractor. Mr Jepps confirmed that National Highways and the taxpayer "won't be footing the bill". The motorway remains open with three lanes but further lane closures will be put in place to ensure all the other joints are fine, he said. Bikers seriously injured after head-on crash
The rider and passenger of a motorcycle have been left seriously injured after their vehicle ended up in a ditch following a head-on crash with a van. North Yorkshire Police said the incident took place at around 11:40 BST on Friday on the A19 South of Escrick towards Hollicarrs. A black Kawasaki motorcycle went into a ditch off the carriageway following the collision with a white Vauxhall Vivaro van, resulting in the bikers being taken to hospital. The scene was closed following the incident with diversions in place, but it reopened just before 16:00 BST. Anyone with any information or dashcam footage is asked to get in touch with police.
