Kerala govt to hold week-long Onam fest from September 3
Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 19 (PTI) The Kerala government on Saturday said its official Onam celebrations will be held over seven days, starting September 3.
Thiruvonam, the most important day of the harvest festival, will be celebrated on September 5.
A meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan finalised the schedule for the week-long festivities, which will conclude with a grand cultural procession in the capital, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
The celebrations will be organised under the aegis of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), with the Chief Minister directing all departments to work in coordination to ensure the events are conducted in a grand and extensive manner.
The stretch from Kowdiar to Manacaud in Thiruvananthapuram will be declared a festival zone. The capital city will be brightly illuminated, and all programmes will adhere to the state's green protocol.
Onam fairs will be held at the district level by Kudumbashree, the all-women network that is also cultivating vegetables and flowers ahead of the festival. Harvesting will be completed before Onam, the statement said.
It was also decided to distribute 'Onam kits" containing essential provisions, both offline and online.
State-run Supplyco will conduct Onam fairs at district, taluk, and mandalam centres. The availability of vegetables will be increased through Horticorp outlets across the state.
In addition to the Chief Minister, several ministers and senior officials attended the meeting. PTI LGK SSK

Russia starts direct commercial flights between Moscow, Pyongyang
Moscow, Jul 27 (AP) Russia on Sunday opened a regular air link between Moscow and Pyogyang, a move reflecting increasingly close ties between the two countries. The first flight operated by Russian carrier Nordwind took off from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport carrying over 400 passengers. Russia's Transport Ministry said there will be one flight a month to meet demand. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who visited North Korea's new Wonsan-Kalma beach resort earlier this month to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, promised to encourage Russian tourists to visit the complex. The resort, which can accommodate nearly 20,000 people, is at the centre of Kim's push to boost tourism to improve his country's troubled economy. North Korea has been slowly easing the curbs imposed during the pandemic and reopening its borders in phases. But the country hasn't said if it would fully resume international tourism. Regular flights between Russia's eastern port city of Vladivostok and Pyongyang reopened in 2023 following a break caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Russia and North Korea have sharply expanded military and other ties in recent years, with Pyongyang supplying weapons and troops to back Russia's military action in Ukraine. IndiGo expansion: Airline to grow international network, eyes 40% global capacity share with new MRO opportunities
IndiGo plans to continue expanding its global footprint by adding more international destinations, supported by the induction of long-range A321 XLR aircraft this fiscal and newly leased wide-body planes. The airline aims to increase its international capacity share from the current 28% to 40% by FY 2030, according to its annual report for 2024–25. 'We will continue to add more destinations internationally, especially with XLRs coming in along with our newly leased wide body aircraft for long haul operations. From 28 per cent current international capacity share, we are aiming for 40 per cent by FY 2030,' IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said in his message in the report, PTI reported. The airline, which operates around 2,200 daily flights with a fleet of over 430 aircraft, currently holds a 64.5% share of the domestic air travel market. It recently launched long-haul flights to Amsterdam and Manchester using Boeing 787 Dreamliners leased from Norway's Norse Atlantic. The first A321 XLRs are expected to join the fleet by the end of March 2026, followed by Airbus A350-900s in 2027.
