Deliveries in Haryana hospitals up from 89% to 98% in 9 yrs

Gurgaon: Most women in Haryana are choosing to give birth in hospitals and health centres, according to govt data that shows 98.3% of deliveries recorded across the state in 2024 were in medical facilities, a jump from 89% in 2015.
Officials said on Wednesday that institutional deliveries was helping make childbirth safer and reduce maternal mortality rate (MMR) in the state. The Special Bulletin on Maternal Mortality in India, released this month, said Haryana's MMR reduced from 110 per 100,000 live births in 2017–19 to 106 in 2019-21.
The state aims to bring down MMR to the global goal of 70 for 100,000 births by 2030.
Maternal mortality is defined as the death of a woman while she is pregnant, death after giving birth or within six weeks of giving birth.
Health department officials said several govt initiatives are helping make these changes possible. Among them is the 'Zero Home Delivery' campaign, which spreads awareness about the importance of delivering a child at health centres with trained medical professionals.
The state also asked all districts to improve ante-natal care and identify high-risk pregnancy cases. They were asked to maintain dashboards with high-risk cases at all govt health centres, and ensure that all anaemic women with low red blood cell count get mandatory blood transfusion.

(PMSMA), which facilitates check-ups for pregnant women in the early stages of conception. Under the National Health Mission (NHM), Haryana also introduced its 'blanket sanction' policy that allows districts to directly hire doctors and specialists in under-staffed regions.
"All labour rooms across the state have been upgraded with essential drugs, equipment, and logistics. These advancements aim to ensure that every childbirth is safe, dignified and well-supported," said Dr Ripu Daman Singh Dhillon, mission director of NHM-Haryana.
Dhillon said that the state also carried out several programmes, including identifying high-risk pregnancies, to intervene before any complications can arise.
For instance, the Janani Surakshit Maah (JSM) campaign facilitates additional resources and medical attention for high-risk pregnancy cases. The Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) provides monetary support for institutional deliveries to women from economically disadvantaged sections.
Similarly, Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) eliminates out-of-pocket expenses by offering free drugs, diagnostics, diet, blood transfusions and referral transport services to women.
"The state also implemented a maternal death review (MDR) system, conducting one-to-one reviews at the state level to identify systemic gaps and implement corrective measures promptly. This data-driven approach allows for continuous improvement," said Dr Virender Yadav, director, NHM-Haryana.

Ashakirana Kendras to offer free cataract surgeries
BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister and Bangalore Urban Development Minister DK Shivakumar and Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao inaugurated the "Ashakirana Drishti Kendra" at Dr Balagangadharanath Swamiji Multi-Speciality Hospital in Govindarajanagar M C Layout on Thursday. This was in collaboration with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), National Health Mission, National Blindness and Visual Impairment Control Programme and Sight Saver Swayamsevak Sanstha. With 11 such centres spread across BBMP, the municipality aims to offer free cataract surgeries and spectacles to the poor and needy free of cost. "Among the 11 Ashakirana Drishti Kendras, five centres will be provided with human resources, surgical equipment and spectacle distribution services under CSR initiatives," said Sirajuddin Madani, Chief Health Officer (CHO), BBMP. He added these centres are part of a total of 393 designated Ashakirana Vision Centres operating in Karnataka. The CHO also added that the facility will be available at JJR Nagar Public Hospital, Halasuru Maternity Hospital, H Siddaiah Road Maternity Hospital, Hosahalli Maternity Hospital, R C Pura Maternity Hospital, Banashankari Maternity Hospital, Gauri Palya Maternity Hospital, Rampur Hospital, Indiranagar Public Hospital, Jayanagar Public Hospital and KC General Hospital, Malleswaram. Local MLA Priya Krishna, Special Commissioner of the Health Department Suralkar Vikas Kishore, National Health Mission Director Avinash Memon Rajendran, Zonal Joint Commissioner Sangappa and other officials were present.

Centre approves supplementary funds for Punjab under National Health Mission
Chandigarh: After standoffs over funding in recent years, the Union ministry of health and family welfare approved supplementary funding of Rs 23.22 crore for Punjab under the National Health Mission (NHM) for the financial year 2025–26. The additional funding aims to boost nutrition support for tuberculosis (TB) patients, promote innovative public health campaigns, and strengthen digital mental health infrastructure across the state. The revised budget signals a shift in Punjab's health priorities toward targeted public health interventions, especially in nutrition, mental health, and disease elimination, within a constrained fiscal space. With the latest approvals, Punjab's total NHM allocation for 2025–26 now stands at Rs 1,841.65 crore, which includes both previously sanctioned funds and the newly approved supplementary proposals. A major portion of the supplementary funding — Rs 19.31 crore — has been earmarked for the Nikshay Poshan Yojana, a direct benefit transfer scheme that provides monthly nutritional support to TB patients. Another Rs 49.3 lakh has been sanctioned under the Tele-MANAS initiative — the govt's national mental health helpline project. The dispute led to the suspension of NHM funds of Rs 112 crore for the financial year 2022–23 and Rs 366.41 crore for 2023–24, from a total central allocation of Rs 457.90 crore. In Nov 2024, the two sides reached an agreement to rebrand the clinics as Ayushman Arogya Kendras, aligning with the Centre's guidelines. The renaming process was completed by Jan 2025 and included wall painting, installation of six logos, name boards, and defined border patterns for windows and doors.

Health workers strike over ‘no pay' in 3 dists
Dehradun: Outsourced workers under the National Health Mission (NHM) began a work boycott on July 1 in Tehri, Almora and Nainital districts, citing non-payment of salaries for the past three months. Although their salaries have been due since April, no payments have been made, fueling frustration, particularly as monsoon-related duties intensify. Workers also said that their Employees' Provident Fund contributions have not been deposited since January. According to doctors on duty, the protest impacted the health services to some extent across the three districts on Tuesday. In Tehri, 52 workers submitted a memorandum to the chief medical officer, while around 150 and 175 workers joined the strike in Almora and Nainital, respectively. NHM Workers' Association has warned that if payments are not cleared soon, more of the state's approximately 1,400 NHM staff may join the protest Those on strike include staff nurses, ANMs and data entry operators among others. "This is a recurring concern that needs a permanent solution. In a season where many are deployed on disaster relief and Char Dham duties, how can they perform at their best when morale is so low?" said Sunil Bhandari of the NHM workers' association, Uttarakhand. Meanwhile, the health authorities claimed they have already resolved the issue and that the pending salaries will be disbursed soon.
