Five arrested for supplying narcotics to DU students
Police said that they received a tip on May 12 that a man was supplying illegal drugs near a college and would be on a nearby road to deliver a consignment. Acting on the tip, police laid a trap and arrested the man, identified as Manish Bhatle (25), they said.
'A packet containing 10 boxes of capsules (Dicyclomine HCI, Tramadol HCI, and Acetaminophen) totaling 2,360 capsules was recovered from him. Another packet containing 120 bottles of codeine-based syrup was also seized. The accused had no bill or prescription,' said DCP (crime) Apoorva Gupta.
Police said that Bhatle revealed he was working with his maternal uncle, Devender Kumar, who owns a chemist shop in Malkaganj. Police then arrested Kumar.
'Kumar disclosed that he procured the drugs from two men who work in the medicine field in Malkaganj. We started looking for his associates and found a man named Nikhil Singh (28), who had supplied six boxes of tramadol capsules earlier. He was arrested and led us to another associate, Ankit Gupta, who owns a chemist shop on GT Karnal Road,' she added.
The team also raided Gupta's godown on GT Karnal Road and found 15 boxes of codeine-based syrup, which had no bill or invoice. Police said they called the Drug Control Department, which also declared the syrup illicit.
Gupta's arrest and interrogation led police to the fifth accused. 'We found that a man named Kapil (28), known only by his first name, who works as a medical representative with a renowned firm, was also helping the gang with the drug supply. He was arrested near Dwarka,' said an officer.
Investigation revealed that the accused targeted college campuses and nearby areas to sell the drugs. 'The others were using their contacts to provide the drugs,' added the officer.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police's Special Cell arrested five men from across Delhi and Haryana with opium, charas, and heroin worth ₹5 crore. Police said the accused posed as cloth merchants and smuggled drugs from Nepal and northeast India to Delhi via road. They were caught in Burari in a car where they had concealed drugs near the fuel tank.

Kanhaiya Lal murder accused plea in SC seeks direction to stay 'Udaipur Files' film release
NEW DELHI: Mohammed Javed, one of the accused in the 2022 murder of Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli, has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court seeking a fair trial and stay on the release of the film The Udaipur Files: Kanhaiyalal Tailor Murder, scheduled to be released on 11 July 2025. Javed -- 8th accused in the murder case -- in his petition argued that the film is communally provocative and could prejudice ongoing judicial proceedings. "Releasing such a movie at this juncture, portraying the accused as guilty and the story as conclusively true, has the potential to seriously prejudice the ongoing proceedings," he stated in his plea. Javed sought direction to halt the release of the film which is said to be based on events pertaining to the case. He highlighted in his petition that if the film releases, it is likely to influence public opinion in a manner that could affect the fairness of the trial. He added that the film will likely compromise the presumption of innocence. "This directly impacts the right to a free and fair trial of the Petitioner, as guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India," said, Javed in his petition filed before the top court. Udaipur-based tailor Teli was brutally murdered in June 2022, allegedly by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous. The NIA investigated the case and a case listing offences under the UAPA and IPC was filed against the accused. The case trial is currently ongoing before the Special NIA Court, Jaipur.

Religious conversion racket: Dist admn begins razing bungalow of kingpin, aides in Balrampur
The Balrampur administration initiated the demolition of a sprawling bungalow constructed on main Utraula-Mankapur Road, on Tuesday, after issuing three notices regarding illegal construction done on government land, local authorities confirmed. The authorities said the action was taken in the presence of a heavy police force and administrative officials, with five bulldozers deployed for the operation. Balrampur additional SP Vishal Pandey said, 'The entire demolition process will take at least two - three days to complete. The demolition began today at 10 am and continued till late in the evening.' Meanwhile, barricading was done around the property to avoid locals gathering during the demolition process. The property, located in Madhpur village under Utraula tehsil, was built on Gram Sabha land listed as Gata number 337/370. 'Our government is fully committed to the dignity and security of our sisters and daughters. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the activities of the accused, Jalaluddin, are not only anti-social but also anti-national. The Uttar Pradesh government will not show any leniency in maintaining law and order. The properties of the accused and all the criminals associated with his gang will be confiscated, and strict legal action will be taken against them,' chief minister Yogi Adityanath posted on X on Tuesday, while reacting to the Balrampur action, adding, ' There is no place in the state for those who disrupt peace, harmony, and women's safety. A senior police official said that Neetu alias Nasreen was arrested along with Jalaluddin Shah by UP Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Saturday in connection with the case registered under sections 121A, 153A, 417, and 420 of the Indian Penal Code and sections 3, 5(1), 5(2), 5(3), and 8(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021 in October 2024. He said Neetu alias Nasreen and her husband Naveen Rohra alias Jamaluudin and their minor daughter, who were originally Sindhis, were residents of Mumbai and they shifted to Balrampur after embracing Islam a few years ago. Naveen Rohra was arrested by UP ATS on charges of religious conversion on April 8 earlier this year. 'Three notices were issued to Neetu Naveen Rohra by the office of Utraula Tehsildar, Satyapal Prajapati. The first notice was issued on May 17, the second notice was issued on June 17 and the third notice was served on July 7 (Monday). The demolition process on encroachment was initiated on Tuesday after getting no reply from the illegal occupants,' said Balrampur district magistrate (DM), Pawan Agarwal. Balrampur superintendent of police (SP), Vikas Kumar, said the police force has been asked to remain on alert to avert any possible trouble by supporters of Chhangur Baba.
