BANGI : The International Labour Organization (ILO) is looking to Malaysia as a reference point in its effort to regulate the gig economy, says deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Zahid, who chairs the high-level committee for the establishment of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM), said the ILO's interest reflected the global significance of Malaysia's pioneering approach in drafting legislation aimed at protecting gig workers' rights.
'This bill, which will be tabled and potentially passed in Parliament in August or September this year, is not just about setting the protection net (for gig workers) in stone,' he told reporters after chairing a roundtable session on the gig economy here today.
'It's the first of its kind focussed entirely on the gig economy, unlike in other countries that simply append it to existing laws.'
He said a representative from Malaysia had presented the country's framework at the ILO headquarters in Geneva recently, with the organisation expressing interest in studying Malaysia's experience more closely.
Zahid confirmed that SEGiM would be set up under the Prime Minister's Department to oversee the development and implementation of policies tailored for the gig economy, including upskilling initiatives and social protection mechanisms.
The commission will work closely with the digital, transport and human resources ministries to ensure gig workers are given opportunities not just for temporary income but also for long-term career development, including entrepreneurship.
Zahid also said SEGiM would serve as the main authority for the gig sector nationwide.
It would be responsible for ensuring industry compliance with standards and transparent policy execution, while also strengthening self-regulation practices among platform providers, he said.
To enhance policymaking and ensure industry feedback is heard, Zahid proposed informal town hall sessions involving gig platform operators, government officials, and other stakeholders.
He said such dialogue should happen in a more relaxed setting, reflecting the flexible nature of the gig sector.
'Too many meetings are too formal. I've suggested we adopt a more casual, open format for discussions. No rigid protocols – just honest conversations between those affected and those responsible for the policies.'
The establishment of SEGiM was first proposed by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation under the digital ministry.
Key aspects of the Gig Workers Bill 2025 include the introduction of an official definition for gig workers, setting minimum compensation, establishing a grievance mechanism, and implementing social security protection such as mandatory contributions to the Social Security Organisation.

Bangladesh to cooperate fully with Malaysia in GMRB militant group investigation

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Bangladesh has pledged full cooperation to Malaysian authorities following the arrest of 36 Bangladeshi nationals in a recent security operation targeting alleged involvement in the Bangladeshi Radical Militant Group (GMRB). The Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Ministry said that the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur promptly engaged with the relevant Malaysian authorities and formally requested the identities of the individuals as well as information regarding the allegations brought against them. Five of the individuals have been formally charged in Malaysian courts, while the rest are undergoing further investigation or deportation processes, the ministry said in a statement yesterday. "The Bangladesh government is closely monitoring the developments, and the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur is in close communication with the relevant Malaysian authorities and will extend necessary support to the expatriate Bangladeshis wherever needed,' it said. The ministry also reiterated Bangladesh's firm stance against all forms of terrorism, violent extremism, and militancy, reaffirming its commitment to cooperate fully with Malaysian authorities in this regard. Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail reportedly said that police initially detected the group's activities through social media accounts operated by Bangladeshi nationals using Malaysian IP addresses to spread IS ideology. He said a three-phase operation between April and June led to the arrest of 36 Bangladeshi Radical Militant Group (GMRB) members, including their leader, dismantling the group's Johor-based network. — Bernama

Zahid tells Umno members to stop trampling each other, says internal feuds risk party's survival

SEGAMAT, July 6 — UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has reminded the leadership and members to stay away from the culture of putting each other down which is not beneficial to the party. Comparing the action to 'crabs in a bucket', he said all members should instead work together to strengthen the party's internal security for the survival of the party ahead of the upcoming 16th general election (GE16). 'Don't be like crabs in a bucket... all the crabs want to get out, but step on the others so that they can climb up. 'In the end, not a single one comes out, all die in the bucket. Why are we dying in a bucket because we trampled on each other?,' he said at the closing of the Segamat UMNO Division Delegates Meeting at the Taman Yayasan Multipurpose Hall, here yesterday. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, stressed that the culture of pointing fingers and assuming that only one is right will only break the people's confidence in UMNO. 'Any differences of opinion among members must be expressed in a civilised and ethical manner, especially when discussing internal party issues. 'If today we are small leaders, God willing one day we can become big leaders, but if we are rude to others today, when we rise, more people will be rude to us,' he said. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, also called on the entire UMNO machinery to remain focused on efforts to strengthen unity among the grassroots and not make differences of opinion a cause for division. Also present were Johor UMNO Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Segamat UMNO Division chief Datuk Zahari Sarip. — Bernama

Asyraf Wajdi: Umno to stay with BN in GE16, going solo would show ‘arrogance and pride' like past leaders

ARAU, July 6 — Umno will not contest the 16th General Election (GE16) on its own and must work with other parties or coalitions, the party's secretary-general Datuk Seri Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki reportedly said Utusan Malaysia cited him saying Umno had historically never stood for elections independently, noting that the party initially formed the Alliance Party with MCA and MIC between 1957 and 1973, and later expanded into Barisan Nasional (BN). 'Today, I believe it's impossible and unlikely for Umno to go solo, as it would only reflect arrogance and pride — something that some past leaders were guilty of. 'Even when Umno was strong in the past, we still relied on our political partners,' he reportedly said. Asyraf said records show that 89 countries globally have formed political coalitions in response to shifting political landscapes. 'Given this context, I believe the most important thing is for Umno to contest under the BN banner in the upcoming general election. 'And the form of cooperation will be decided following discussions among the party's top leadership,' he reportedly said. Last year, Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh hinted that the party might contest on its own in the upcoming GE16, depending on the situation at the time.
