Seriousness of mocking others — Hafiz Hassan

JULY 29 — The Quran says: 'O believers, let not any people ridicule other people, for they may be better than them.' (Surah al-Hujurat, verse 11) The verse clearly warns the believers not to ridicule or mock others — 'la yaskhar'. The word 'yaskhar' comes from the root word 'sakhara'. According to Tafsir al-Mizan (exegesis of the Quran) the word 'sakhara' is often translated as mocking — that is, to say something which degrades someone and puts him or her down. It could be verbal or a subtle indication or could even be imitation. The aim is to ridicule and make others laugh at the person. PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari speaks during a dialogue session at the Media and Influencer Dinner Night in Bangi. December 3, 2024—Picture by Raymond Manuel The exegesis explains the reason and wisdom of the prohibition as follows: 'From the tone of the verse, we understand that the reason for the prohibition is that the person being ridiculed might be superior in God's eyes than the person doing the ridiculing.' The verse should remind the believers of the seriousness of mocking others. *This is the personal opinion of the writer or publication and does not necessarily represent the views of Malay Mail.

Police open investigation after two boys found unsupervised by roadside in Bangi

KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 — Police are investigating an incident where two boys, aged three and six, were found by passersby alone and unsupervised by the roadside near Bandar Bukit Mahkota in Bangi yesterday morning. Kajang district police chief ACP Naazron Abdul Yusof said they received word of the incident at about 11.57am when concerned passersby brought the brothers to a police station. 'Preliminary investigations found that the brothers were in good condition and had come out of their nanny's house while their nanny was sleeping and were discovered by passersby not far from the housing area,' he said in a statement today. The parents of the children were contacted and showed up at the Bangi police station at about 2 pm and the brothers were handed over to them safely. The police have called up five individuals, including the nanny, to record their statements to facilitate investigations under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect of children, he said. He also advised the public, especially parents and guardians, to be more vigilant of their children's safety and not to be negligent in their care. — Bernama

JPJ finalising major Kejara system overhaul to get dangerous drivers off the road

BANGI, July 17 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is now in the final stage of reviewing new improvements in the Demerit Points System For Traffic Offences (Kejara), which is a safety mechanism to take serial offenders and dangerous drivers off the road. JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the improvements that will be implemented are part of the massive overhaul of the Kejara system as announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke recently. 'The Kejara system is currently in the final review stage at JPJ before we take it to the Transport Ministry for consideration on what improvements will be implemented to the new Kejara system,' he said. He said this at a press conference after an engagement session with the Association of Lorry Operators and Express Tourism Bus Operators on road safety initiatives here today. Aedy Fadly said the improvement aspects in this system need to go through a certain period of time because it also involves certain legal aspects and amendments. 'Amendments to the procedures will take time because it needs to go through higher levels such as the Attorney General and so on,' he said. Previously, Loke said Kejara would be overhauled soon because the system is currently ineffective and is deemed to be a failure. Loke said that previously, the deduction of demerit points would only be done after a traffic offender has paid the summons or has been charged in court and not when the summons notice is issued. The Kejara system is a procedure for assigning demerit points to motor vehicle drivers who commit scheduled offences under the Road Transport Act 1987 and the regulations thereunder. A total of 20 offences identified as potentially causing serious or fatal accidents and endangering other road users was included in the list of offences under the (new) demerit point system. Meanwhile, Aedy Fadly said holders of the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and Goods Vehicle Licence (GDL) who are involved in serious accidents will go through a certain process before a decision is made on whether the licence will be suspended. 'JPJ will not immediately suspend a licence. A show-cause notice will be issued first and an assessment will be made on whether or not suspension is necessary. The state JPJ director is authorised to make this decision,' he said. He said the suspension of licence will only involve PSV and GDL, not the Malaysian Driving Licence (LMMy) for the drivers involved. 'So far, five drivers have had their PSV licences suspended. It is not permanently suspended. It is temporary and comes with a specfic term and duration,' he said. Regarding today's engagement session, he said JPJ informed stakeholders about the progress of efforts so far to improve road safety. 'The participants have given very positive feedback and asked that JPJ regularly hold town hall discussions, which we initiated for the first time this year. 'My team and I have agreed to hold this town hall dialogues periodically at the request of the industry,' he said. — Bernama

At just 12, Bangi girl Ellysha shines in voiceovers, theatre and sports, on path to represent Malaysia

BANGI, July 10 — Nur Ellysha Rashlina Mohd Rashdan may be only 12 but she is already carving out a name for herself in the world of creative arts and sports. This Year Six pupil of Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Empat here has already done voiceovers and performed in a musical theatre, and is even active in sports. Ellysha, as she is fondly known, is no stranger to the creative arts as her father Mohd Rashdan Ramlee was actively involved in animation and production works, and was the creator of the English-language 3D animated TV series 'Supertots' and 'SuperSquad', which became a phenomenon in the early 2000s. According to Ellysha, several main characters in the animated series were named after and inspired by her and her three older siblings, making the production feel personal to the family and sparking her own interest in the creative arts. 'From a young age, I was exposed to the production world as I often accompanied my mother and siblings to various events related to 'Supertots' and 'SuperSquad'. That's where I developed a love for the performing arts and the desire to try it for myself,' she said in a recent interview with Bernama. To nurture her talent in the performing arts, Ellysha began attending dance and theatre classes at the age of four, under the guidance of Noraniza Idris, who is also known as the Queen of Traditional and Creative Ethnic Rhythms. So far, Ellysha has done voiceovers for, among others, corporate social responsibility advertisements produced by the National Population and Family Development Board, as well as Covid-19 awareness campaigns by Yayasan Hasanah. She has also received other opportunities, including acting in the musical theatre 'Huminodun: Muzikal Puteri Nabalu' this year. Ellysha also excels in rope skipping and represented Malaysia in the Singapore National and Open Jump Rope Championship 2024 in various under-12 categories. 'I love rope skipping because it can be done both individually and in groups. Right now, I train three to four times a week to sharpen my skills. 'God willing, I will represent Malaysia in the Queen's Cup Jump Rope Thailand Open 2025 and the Singapore National Jump Rope 2025 at the end of this year,' said Ellysha, who is also a member of the Malaysia Jump Rope Federation and GB Rope Skipping Academy. Nur Ellysha Rashlina Mohd Rashdan Ellysha hopes to pursue her secondary education at Sekolah Seni Malaysia Perak and later further her studies in theatre arts at UPSI. — Bernama pic Despite her busy schedule in the arts and sports fields, Ellysha remains committed to her studies and ensures her academics are never overlooked. 'Sometimes it's tiring because I go to school during the day and have training or tuition at night, but I'm used to it. If you love what you do and have goals, you'll make the effort,' said Ellysha, who also serves as a peer mentor at her school. She is also the president of her school's Cultural Club. Looking ahead, Ellysha hopes to pursue her secondary education at Sekolah Seni Malaysia Perak and later further her studies in theatre arts at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris. 'If we have the passion, we shouldn't be afraid to try. We must believe in ourselves and not give up easily. If we work hard, God willing, a path will open,' she said. Meanwhile, her mother Nor Haslina Mohamed, 49, said parents play a crucial role in nurturing a child's potential from an early age, including building a portfolio, providing training space and guiding them toward the right path. 'Every child is different... some are quiet, some are active. If you notice their interests, help and encourage them gradually. A child's success isn't solely based on academics but also on talent development and character building. 'I believe early exposure and consistent guidance are vital. As parents, we must be attentive and help our children discover their strengths,' she said. — Bernama
