‘Not cargo': Doc seeks facilities for differently abled at Hindon terminal

Singh wrote in the complaint – also marked to the AIX airport manager, regulator DGCA and the Union civil aviation ministry — that he booked an Air India Express flight to go to Goa on May 4 and return two days after.

"I had requested wheelchair assistance at the time of booking, knowing that the airline does not have towable ramps or aerobridges. I proactively contacted the airline's customer support to confirm availability of an ambulift. Two Air India Express executives assured me on call that an ambulift would be available but, to my shock, I was later informed that the terminal does not have any such facility," Singh said in the complaint.
"Later, when I confronted the carrier, they most callously offered a solution, saying —'It's not at all a problem, we will use four people to lift you along with the wheelchair' — as if my body were luggage, to be handled like cargo," Singh wrote.
An ambulift is a vehicle with ambulance-like facilities that is used to ferry differently abled passengers from an airport terminal to the aircraft. It then lifts passengers on wheelchairs or stretchers to the level of the aircraft's door.
Major airports, among them Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, provide this facility.
Singh said this "solution" was "not only undignified" but also in violation of Article 21 of the Constitution and civil aviation rules.
AIX, in a series of posts on X, said that the "availability of an ambulift falls under the purview of the airport authority".
On this response, Singh told TOI on Thursday the carrier is deflecting blame on the Airport Authority of India, but it is as guilty as AAI.
He demanded that the terminal must immediately procure an ambulift or an equivalent facility, take disciplinary action against AIX staff for misleading claims and the airline should issue an apology to him.
An official of Hindon Civil Terminal said the aerodrome advisory committee (AAC) has been meeting regularly to upgrade and enhance facilities. "This includes facilities for differently abled people and medical services. Many recommendations have been made in this regard, and they are being worked out," he said.
The Hindon airport, which previously handled only Udan flights with limited traffic, is now connected to all metro cities, with a daily flight each to Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, and two to Bengaluru. AI Express also operates on the Goa, Jammu and Bhubaneswar routes.
Located about 25km from Delhi and well connected by road and metro trains, the Hindon terminal is being used as NCR's second airport – after IGI -- primarily for travellers from Noida, East Delhi, and west UP.

Raipur medical college doctor accused of sexual harassment by student
A senior doctor teaching at a medical college in Chhattisgarh's Raipur has been booked for allegedly sexually harassing a student, said the police on Saturday (July 5, 2025). The alleged incident happened in January when the accused doctor, Ashish Sinha (who is said to be in his late forties) was the head of the medicine department of the medical college and the victim had back then submitted a complaint to the police. 'Following the inquiry, Mr. Sinha was removed from his post of the HOD after which the victim contacted us again on Saturday and the FIR was registered,' said Mr. Singh. He added that a team had gone to arrest Mr. Sinha from his residence but he was not found there and that efforts were on to find him. Mr. Sinha was unavailable for a comment.

A day after fire in Karol Bagh market, 2 found dead
New Delhi: Two people, a 25-year-old civil services aspirant and a 30-year-old lab technician, were killed in the massive fire at Vishal Mega Mart in central Delhi's Karol Bagh on Friday. According to the fire service, the building lacked a valid fire certificate and a case of negligence has been registered by police. The deceased were identified as Kumar Dhirender Pratap Singh and Pawan Gautam. Singh, originally from Sonbhadra in Uttar Pradesh, was found dead inside the elevator, where he is believed to have suffocated after getting trapped, while Gautam, an ITI graduate from Aligarh who worked as a lab technician, was found on the second floor. According to Delhi Fire Service, the blaze was reported at 6.44pm on Friday. Minutes later, Singh's brother, Vikram, received a desperate message from his trapped sibling. "At 6.51pm, my brother texted me about being stuck in the lift," Vikram revealed to TOI. "He pleaded, 'Kisi tarah se bachalo, main lift mein fasa hua hoon. He was shirtless and in his vest, maybe because he used his shirt to cover his face to avoid the smoke," said Vikram. "I wish I had been there to go into the building and save him," he added. Before the tragedy, Singh had been studying in a library nearby for 4-5 hours, according to his friends. Vikram remembered his younger brother, "He had a good nature. Our mother is a govt schoolteacher in UP and he often volunteered to teach the students whenever he visited our village." The structure had only two staircases and one lift, with no ventilation except the entrance. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was caused by a short circuit on the second floor. Firefighting operations were severely hampered due to the lack of ventilation in the building. Fire officers had to use JCB machines to break open the front-facing parts of the upper floors to extinguish the flames, with 15 fire tenders and 90 firefighters engaged in the fierce struggle to control the massive blaze. Mathura man supplied drones to Naxals to keep eye on security forces: NIA
A Mathura man, who was arrested in Delhi on June 29 by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for his links with the banned CPI (Maoist), supplied drones to Naxalites and trained them to operate the equipment and keep watch on security forces' activities in the forest areas of Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha, NIA officials privy to the investigation confirmed. For representation only During interrogation, the man identified as Vishal Singh revealed he had been supplying drones and providing operational training in dense forests for the past seven years, the officials said. The officials confirmed that Vishal Singh, the key accused in the revival of a CPI (Maoist) Northern Region Bureau (NRB), had delivered drones to leaders of the banned outfit in the Chhakarbanda- Pachrukhiya forest area of Bihar. Singh had imparted technical training to cadres of CPI (Maoist) and had also attended meetings with its central committee members deep in the forest areas of Bihar in 2019, the officials further said. NIA officials stated that Vishal Singh acted as a clandestine service provider, largely maintaining a normal life in Delhi. They added that Singh kept abreast of the latest technology while in the national capital and improvised it for the benefit of Naxalite groups operating in dense forest areas. The NIA is investigating the case and probing the extent of Vishal Singh's involvement with the CPI (Maoist). The agency is also examining the digital evidence seized during search operations to uncover more details about the organisation's activities and plans. The arrest highlights the ongoing efforts of the NIA to dismantle operations of banned terrorist organizations in the country. The NIA had confirmed that the agency seized digital devices, including hard drives, pen drives and mobile phones, as well as other incriminating material, during a search at Singh's West Delhi house. In August 2024, the NIA had arrested another accused, Ajay Singhal alias Aman, who was in charge of the Haryana and Punjab state organising committee of CPI (Maoist). The case relates to the terrorist organisation's conspiracy to revive its waning influence in the Northern Regional Bureau (NRB) area, officials said.
