We also call them Pulliam fellows — in recognition of the family that used to own the newspaper and has continued to support journalism in Indianapolis — and past participants have gone on to rich careers at the Star and elsewhere in journalism.

I graduated from Howard University in 2023 with a bachelor's in journalism. I earned a master's in sports journalism from Arizona State University in 2024.
My favorite part of journalism is conversing with athletes off-record. I have a passion for humanizing athletes through my work and making them relatable to readers. That starts with normal human interaction off-record.
Paola Boivin, one of my professors at Arizona State, encouraged me to apply. Upon further research, I knew IndyStar would be a place where I could learn from world-class reporters, sharpen my skills and mature as a reporter.

The team did not provide details on the investigation, saying it was "not permitted to comment further at this time." The investigation is believed to be related to gambling, multiple sources told Zack Meisel and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Advertisement Ortiz, 26, will go on paid leave through the All-Star break, per Meisel. The news comes just hours before Ortiz was expected to take the mound against the Chicago Cubs. With Ortiz on leave, the Guardians will turn to Joey Cantillo to start Thursday's game. After a promising season in 2024, in which Ortiz posted a 3.32 ERA over 37 appearances with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was traded to the Guardians in December. He opened the season in Cleveland's rotation and has a 4.36 ERA over 88 2/3 innings. In 16 starts, Ortiz has a 4-9 record. His nine losses lead the American League. If gambling is at the center of the investigation, Ortiz could face a wide range of consequences from the league. MLB banned former infielder Tucupita Marcano for life in 2024 after it was determined he bet on his own team while he was injured. Four other players received one-year bans after it was determined they bet on baseball, though not on their own teams. Those four players were reinstated from their suspensions in June. Advertisement MLB players are not allowed to gamble on baseball or softball at any level, though can gamble on other sports. The news comes in the midst of a disappointing season for the Guardians. After entering the year with playoff aspirations, the team has a 40-44 record and sits in third place in the American League Central. Cleveland is on a six-game losing streak entering Thursday.

The Boston Red Sox made their big free agency splash this offseason on former Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman. The Red Sox signed the two-time All-Star to a three-year, $120 million contract with opt-outs included. Advertisement The addition has paid off so far for Boston as Bregman has a team-leading .299 BA and .913 OPS, along with 11 home runs and 35 RBI. Recently, the Red Sox got positive news on the likelihood that Bregman remains in Boston following the 2025 season. "Alex Bregman, the Red Sox' marquee offseason addition who is eligible to become a free agent again in four months, is all ears about a new contract — if there is anything to hear," Boston Globe's Tim Healey said (h/t SportsIllustrated). "That includes a potential extension before reaching the open market." Bregman waited deep into free agency to sign his contract with the Red Sox, and structured his contract so he had flexibility to re-negotiate a new deal based on his performance. The Red Sox have already called up numerous young prospects, and Bregman would be the veteran staple at third base to lead Boston for the future. "I always tell the team — and Alex directs me to tell them — we're always open to any conversation,' Bregman's agent Scott Boras said to Healey (h/t SportsIllustrated). 'Any player who plays well somewhere, it's something that's important for the team and important for the player. It's an additive." Advertisement Bregman is currently on the injured list as he deals with a quad injury. He has not seen the field since May 23, yet still leads the team in BA and OPS. The Red Sox also got positive news about Bregman's potential return as Boston could see their third baseman return before the All-Star break, according to the latest reports. Bregman was off to a fantastic start in Boston, and his presence has been missed. The third baseman was on pace for one of the best seasons of his career. A return soon would bode well not only for the Red Sox but for Bregman's future contract negotiations. As for now, there's a lot of positivity in Boston around Bregman's likelihood to remain with the team for the future. The Guardians said they were "not permitted to comment." MLB did not disclose the reason for the investigation, but said Ortiz will remain on leave through the end of the All-Star break. Ortiz was to pitch for the Guardians against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday in Chicago. The right-handed pitcher has gone 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA through his first 16 starts this season. Ortiz went 7-6 with a career-best 3.32 ERA over 37 appearances last season for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He went 16-22 with a 4.05 ERA over his first four seasons. The 26-year-old pitcher joined the Guardians through a three-team trade, which also involved the Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays, in December. Ortiz last pitched in a 5-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday in Cleveland. He allowed six hits and four runs over seven innings. Ortiz allowed just two hits and no runs, while issuing a career-high-tying 10 strikeouts over six innings in a 4-2 win over the Athletics on June 21 in West Sacramento, Calif. The Guardians (40-44) are on a six-game losing streak and sit in third place in the American League Central, 12.5 games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers (54-33).
