1 dead, 1 injured in downtown Hamilton shooting, police say
The shooting happened in the area of King Street between James and MacNab streets, according to Insp. Greg Doerr of the Hamilton Police Service. Police were called to the area shortly before 5:30 p.m.
When officers arrived, they found two victims.
The female was pronounced dead at the scene, while the male was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Doerr said the shooter was last seen fleeing on James Street. No further description was released.
Lockdowns of buildings, in place after 6 p.m., have since been lifted, he said.
The shooting occurred blocks away from where crowds were enjoying a free Art Crawl festival, which runs on James Street North, north of Wilson Street.
"We know there is somebody armed with a firearm in the city — we're always concerned," Doerr said.
In a news release on Friday, police said members of its emergency response unit cleared Jackson Square as they investigated. Police also searched James Street.
"A large police presence will remain in place for several hours as officers secure the scene, collect evidence, and work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident," police said in the release.
"We recognize that incidents of violence have a significant impact on our community. Hamilton Police are committed to conducting a thorough investigation, identifying those involved, and ensuring the continued safety of the public."
Roads are closed and traffic is being diverted around King Street, James Street and MacNab Street. Police are restricting pedestrian and vehicle access and residents are being asked to avoid the area.
Anyone who was in the area between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and who witnessed anything, or who has surveillance footage, dashboard camera video, is urged to come forward to police.

Davison County Sheriff's Office investigating shooting at I-90 off ramp
Jul. 13—MITCHELL — The Davison County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that occured Saturday night on an Interstate 90 off ramp about five miles west of Mitchell. According to Steve Harr, sheriff for Davison County, a passerby contacted law enforcement about the incident at about 9:30 p.m. When responders arrived on the scene, they found a vehicle parked on the Betts Road exit westbound off ramp and an individual with a gunshot wound. The individual, whose name is not being released at this time, was taken to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell where they later died. Harr said the Davison County Sheriff's Office is still looking into the incident and has made no conclusions as of Sunday afternoon, but the preliminary investigation suggests the death could be a result of suicide. "It's pretty early yet, and everything is still under investigation," Harr told the Mitchell Republic. The off ramp was closed during the investigation but reopened to traffic later in the evening. Harr said there was no danger to the public stemming from the incident and the investigation is still underway. In addition to the Davison County Sheriff's Office, other responding agencies included the Mitchell Regional Ambulance Service and the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

2 women killed, suspect dead in Kentucky church shooting, police say
Two women died on Sunday at a Kentucky church in a shooting spree that began when a state trooper was wounded after making a traffic stop, police said. The suspect in both shootings was also killed. The suspect carjacked a vehicle after the traffic stop near Lexington's airport and fled to Richmond Road Baptist Church, where he opened fire, Lexington police Chief Lawrence Weathers said. Killed in the shootings at the church were a 72-year-old woman and a 32-year-old woman, the local coroner said. Two other people were wounded at the church and taken to a local hospital, the police chief said. One victim sustained critical injuries and the other was in stable condition, Weathers said. The suspect, who was shot by police and died at the scene, was not immediately identified pending notification of family, he said. "Preliminary information indicates that the suspect may have had a connection to the individuals at the church," the police chief said at a news conference. The trooper stopped the vehicle after receiving a "licence plate reader alert" and was shot at about 11:30 a.m., Weathers said, adding the trooper was in stable condition. Police tracked the carjacked vehicle to the Baptist church, located about 26 kilometres from where the trooper was shot, the police chief said. The shootings remain under investigation, Weathers said. Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn said the church is home to a small, tight-knit congregation. "Please pray for everyone affected by these senseless acts of violence, and let's give thanks for the swift response by the Lexington Police Department and Kentucky State Police," Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said in a social media post. State Attorney General Russell Coleman said detectives with his office were ready to support local and state agencies. "Today, violence invaded the Lord's House," he said in a statement. "The attack on law enforcement and people of faith in Lexington shocked the entire Commonwealth."
