James Gunn Says The Movie Industry Is 'Dying' Due to Unfinished Screenplays

Yahooa day ago

James Gunn, director for the highly anticipated forthcoming reboot of Superman, has been in the news quite a bit recently, and in rather blunt fashion.
The 58-year-old filmmaker has made headlines for casually and confidently responding to fans "trying to restore the SnyderVerse"—in reference to Man of Steel director Zach Snyder—who have laid out a pretty ridiculous set of plans with ways to essentially "bomb reviews" of Superman, along with other ways to keep moviegoers away.
Gunn offered up a funny, albeit condescending reply on X of, "Lol I think we will survive. I'm not sure the eight people that listen to that guy (I'm going to go out on a limb and guess it's a guy) are going to impact the course of events."
While he's also taken to putting fans in their place who have been incorrectly spreading rumors that Batman II is canceled, Gunn also dropped another blunt take on the movie industry as a whole, explaining what he believes is the true reason the movie industry is "dying."
"I do believe that the reason why the movie industry is dying is not because of people not wanting to see movies," Gunn said in a profile from Rolling Stone. "It's not because of home screens getting so good. The number-one reason is because people are making movies without a finished screenplay."
"I know some people that were my former workers at Marvel — people who made some of the worst movies," Gunn explained. "There were people that were lazy and didn't put their time in. And then there were other directors that worked really hard and maybe didn't have the best movie come out, but they did everything they could."
Gunn's overall point comes across as pretty fair and logical, and was in response to a reference about Eddie Murphy once stating that every bad movie happens because of Hollywood's apparent habit of setting a production date before they have a finished screenplay.
One has to believe this problematic habit of Hollywood rushing films to production without a finished product, which has to induce somewhat of an extra massive strain on all the major players involved in any given film, has probably only gotten worse over the last decade with the strong, competing presence of continuously growing streaming platforms.
Gunn appears to be adamantly backing up his take with DC Studios' polar opposite approach to Batman II's incessantly-discussed production status.
"We don't have a script [for Batman II]. Matt's [director Matt Reeves] slow. Let him take his time. Let him do what he's doing. God, people are mean. Let him do his thing, man."
Gunn's Superman reboot starring David Corenswet is right around the corner, slated to hit theaters on July 11.James Gunn Says The Movie Industry Is 'Dying' Due to Unfinished Screenplays first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 18, 2025

THE PUNISHER Special Presentation Starts Filming Soon and His Main Villain Possibly Revealed — GeekTyrant

After making his official MCU debut in Daredevil: Born Again , Jon Bernthal is getting ready to headline his own Punisher Special Presentation on Disney+, and things are gearing up fast. According to Nexus Point News, production on the one-off project kicks off in mid-July and will run through the first week of August in New York. This special marks a major return for Bernthal's take on the character, co-written by the actor himself alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Frank will also cross paths with Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day , but this standalone chapter will give him one hell of a warm-up. So who's Castle up against this time? According to the report, the villain is none other than Ma Gnucci, a classic, grotesque antagonist from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's The Punisher: Welcome Back comic run. For those unfamiliar, Ma Gnucci is a vicious mob boss whose war against Frank gets deeply personal after he wipes out her three sons. The story escalates to the point where Gnucci is mauled by polar bears, loses her limbs, and eventually gets kicked into a burning building. It's brutal, bloody, and exactly the kind of chaos Punisher fans live for. Bernthal seems fully aware of what the audience expects, saying: 'I care very deeply about Frank, I'm really grateful that I'm getting the opportunity to tell the story that I think the fans deserve. 'We're giving it our all and we're trying to tell a Frank Castle story that we're going to turn our back on the audience — it's not going to be easy, it's not going to be light, and I think it's the version that this character deserves and I'm just beyond honored and grateful that we get the opportunity.' As for how this version stacks up against the Netflix series, Bernthal added: 'It's going to be dark; Frank has no interest in breaking out the darkness. It's not going to be easy. I don't know if that's the Netflix tone then that's what it's going to be. It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that.' While Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is wrapping up production soon, this quick turnaround suggests Bernthal may jump straight from one project to the next, keeping Frank Castle right in the thick of Marvel's street-level storytelling. The Punisher Special Presentation is expected to hit Disney+ in 2026. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is aiming for a March 2026 debut, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to arrive in theaters July 31, 2026.

Teaser For Edgar Wright's THE RUNNING MAN Offers First Look at Glen Powell - Full Trailer Drops Tomorrow — GeekTyrant

A teaser for Edgar Wright's The Running Man just dropped, offering our first proper look at Glen Powell as Ben Richards, the doomed contestant in a rigged, dystopian death match watched by millions. The teaser was basically released to announce the full trailer, which will hit tomorrow, but the quick glimpse already hints at big and exciting movie. It features Powell telling us the trailer is coming tomorrow and then there's a behind-the-scenes shot of a massive explosion. The film is based on Stephen King's novel, and it's a dystopian story set in a future society where the government controls everything, the story follows Ben Richards, a desperate and impoverished man who participates in a deadly game show called "The Running Man" to win money for his family. The game involves Richards being hunted by professional killers while trying to evade capture for a month. As he navigates through a decaying and dangerous urban landscape, Richards becomes a symbol of resistance against the oppressive government. Director Edgar Wright previously talked about the film saying: 'One of the things about the book that I loved was the fact that Ben Richards is out in the world on his own, so it's like the deadliest game of hide and seek. It does feel like making a road movie in a lot of ways: a very intense, dangerous road movie.' He continued, 'Ben is moving through different environments and meeting different people as he tries to survive 30 days out in the wild.' As for casting Powell in the lead, Wright shared the thinking behind the choice: 'I felt it was important to see somebody who hadn't really done something like this before. It's similar to Bruce Willis, when he was still the guy from Moonlighting, before he did Die Hard, where that adds to the suspense. Can they make it?' Fans of the novel have long wanted an adaptation that fully taps into the tension and cynicism of King's original vision. With Wright in the director's chair and Powell stepping into Richards' worn shoes, this may finally be it. The Running Man opens in theaters on November 7. You can check out the teaser below and come back tomorrow for the full trailer, it's going to be a wild run.
