Earlier reports indicated that persistent dusty conditions across the region had made it difficult to spot the crescent moon of Zil Hajj. Reduced visibility could impact official moon sighting efforts, which are crucial for determining the dates of Arafat Day and Eidul Adha.
Moreover, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee in Pakistan also announced on Tuesday that the Zil Hajj moon was not sighted in the country. As a result, the first day of Zil Hajj will be observed on Thursday, May 29, and Eidul Adha will be celebrated on June 7, 2025.

Turkey, Bulgaria battle wildfires
Firefighters battled blazes across Turkey and Bulgaria on Monday as a deadly heatwave went into a second week around much of the Mediterranean. There have been at least 14 deaths in the past week in Turkey and about 20 villages have been evacuated, according to officials. In neighbouring Bulgaria, emergency services fought more than 160 wildfires across the country on Monday. Greece also struggled to clear up after a week of forest fires and Spanish planes went to help Portuguese firefighters tackling a blaze on a remote mountain. "We are burning up, we don't even know where to go anymore," Asmin Gezginci, 24, said while returning from a park to her home in the Kurdish-majority southeastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir. Temperatures soared to a record high of 50.5 degrees Celsius (123 Fahrenheit) on Friday in Silopi, two hours from Gezginci's home. AFP

Muharram moon sighted, Ashura to fall on July 6
Listen to article The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee on Thursday announced the sighting of the Muharram-ul-Haram moon for the Islamic year 1447 AH, marking the beginning of the new lunar year from Friday, June 27. Accordingly, Ashura — the 10th of Muharram — will be observed on Sunday, July 6. The announcement was made by Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad following a meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Quetta. Officials from the Pakistan Meteorological Department and the national space agency, SUPARCO, were also in attendance. Zonal and district moon sighting committee meetings were simultaneously held at their respective headquarters, with the Islamabad zonal committee convening at the Ministry of Religious Affairs' Secretariat. Read More: Sindh imposes Section 144, bans pillion riding during Ashura Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Maulana Azad confirmed the sighting of the new moon. 'The moon of Muharram-ul-Haram has been sighted. Friday, June 27, will mark the first day of Muharram, while the 9th of Muharram will fall on Saturday, July 5, and Ashura — the 10th of Muharram — will be observed on Sunday, July 6,' he said. Earlier in the day, the Meteorological Department had noted that dusty conditions in Quetta could reduce the chances of moon visibility. It had projected that the moon would be visible between 8:10 PM and 9:00 PM, with an expected age of 28 hours and 38 minutes. Pakistan's national space agency, SUPARCO, had also released a forecast regarding the lunar month. It stated that the birth of the Muharram moon was expected on June 25 at 3:32 PM, and by sunset on June 26, the moon's age would be approximately 28 hours and 15 minutes. The agency noted that coastal areas of the country would have a 75-minute gap between sunset and moonset — conditions considered highly favourable for sighting the new crescent.

Pilgrims begin Hajj under blazing sun
Pilgrims make their way to Mina as Saudi authorities ratchet up heat protection measures. Photo: REUTERS More or less 1.6 million pilgrims from around the world, including 115,000 Pakistanis, on Wednesday converged on the vast tent city of Mina for the five-day communion with their Creator, Allah Almighty, invoking His divine mercy and seeking forgiveness for their sins. The sprawling tent city of Mina, situated just outside Makkah, marks the first stop for pilgrims undertaking Hajj. They will spend the night there before departing at dawn on Thursday for the plains of Arafat, where they will observe Waqoof-e-Arafat, the Rukn-e-Azm of Hajj, in deep prayer and reflection, seeking divine blessings. Pilgrims will listen to the Hajj sermon in their tents, with translations available in 35 languages. They will perform Zohr and Asr prayers together and spend the entire day engaged in prayers and Talbia. With temperatures expected to top 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), robed pilgrims slowly circled the holy Kaaba. Authorities have ratcheted up heat protection measures such as extra shade to avoid a repeat of last year, when 1,301 people died as temperatures hit 51.8C (125.2F). On Wednesday, pilgrims will perform the tawafwalking seven times around the holy Kaaba. Shaded areas have been enlarged by 50,000 square metres (12 acres), thousands of additional medics will be on standby and more than 400 cooling units will be deployed, Hajj Minister Tawfiq al-Rabiah told AFP last week. Artificial intelligence technology will help process the deluge of data, including video from a new fleet of drones, to better manage the massive crowds.
