Baby killed by 130-pound dog near Ormond Beach in Volusia County, authorities say
Deputies responded to a 911 call shortly before 10 p.m. on the 1700 block of Carolina Avenue, the sheriff's office said in a statement Thursday.
Authorities said the infant was in the care of family members while his parents were out and was found injured in a bedroom with the dog next to him.
The child's parents arrived home during the emergency call and rushed him to the hospital, but he later died from his injuries, according to the sheriff's office.
Authorities said Volusia County Animal Services took possession of the dog at the scene.
The sheriff's office described the incident as "tragic" and said the information released so far is preliminary, pending further investigation.

LaPatner, Hyman and Islam, were laid to rest last week. Etienne's funeral will be held on Saturday. "I just feel sad, you know. That's really what I feel at this point in time. Just very sad for all the innocent lives lost," a man who works at the Bank of America on the ground floor said. "It's not going to feel the same because now every time that you walk by here now, it's just, unfortunately, stained." He added that his colleagues had helped one of the shooting victims open a bank account. St. Bartholomew's Church, next door to 345 Park Ave., raised a banner offering its support to workers still healing from the trauma inflicted by the shooting. "We are here for you," the banner reads, a small comfort amid unimaginable grief.

Quinten Knight, 40, is accused of driving into a group of swimmers on Harris Lake in Chatham County, N.C. He tragically collided with Jennifer Stehle and Brooklyn Mae Carroll, 10, while they were in the lake before 4:35 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 2, according to WRAL News and CBS 17. Carroll died as a result of injuries she sustained, and Jennifer was severely injured and airlifted to the hospital, where her leg was amputated above the knee, CBS 17 and ABC11 reported. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission confirmed in a statement sent to PEOPLE that Jennifer's right leg was also injured. However, surgeons "believed they have saved" it. Her sister-in-law Kristie Stehle told WRAL News that she was in critical condition. Carroll and Jennifer were reportedly not related, according to ABC11. Knight was 'under the influence of an impairing substance,' an arrest warrant and a N.C. Wildlife spokesperson said, per CBS17 and WRAL News. The warrant added that he 'unintentionally caused the death of' the child, per CBS 17. N.C. Wildlife Commission's Sgt Claude Smith told the outlet that Knight drove his girlfriend's Tiger Wake Boat into three swimmers. Officers then arrested him at the Cross Point Access Area. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission confirmed that Knight had been charged with Operating While Impaired and Death by Impaired Boating. It only takes a moment for lives to be changed forever.' He continued, adding, 'We ask the public to keep the families and loved ones of those involved in your thoughts and prayers. We are also grateful to the deputies, first responders, and medical professionals who responded swiftly and courageously in an incredibly difficult situation.' Jennifer's sister-in-law Kristie also released a statement to WRAL News. "Please keep both families in your thoughts and prayers for strength as they try to cope and heal from this terrible tragedy, one that should've never happened,' she said. 'My family and friend did everything right, but because of a series of reckless and selfish decisions, both families are now left traumatized and forever changed.' Woman dies, 3 teens escape house fire in Brandon Township mobile home community
A woman has died as a result of a fire that destroyed her single-wide mobile home Monday morning in Oakland County, Michigan. Neighbors in the Clarkston Lakes mobile home community tried to rescue the woman, who was in a rear bedroom at the time, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said. But they were unsuccessful. Three teenagers who were in the home at the time – the woman's 13-year-old son and two friends, ages 14 and 15 – were able to escape. Her son was in a rear bedroom when the fire broke out, and the friends were near the front of the home. The teens all "escaped serious injury," the report said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with this family in this difficult time," Oakland County Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard said. The call for help was placed at about 7:14 a.m. When deputies and Brandon Township Fire Department crews arrived at the home on Cedar Loop Road, they found the home fully engulfed in flames. The location is near Sashawbaw Road and Oak Hill Road. The sheriff's office fire investigation team has been assigned to the scene. "While we are still in the process of determining cause and origin, any fire is a reminder that we should make sure our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order and we know how to escape from any room in our house should an emergency call for it," Bouchard said.
