Yogi govt to restore temples of historical, religious significance

Hindustan Times26-06-2025
: The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a comprehensive initiative across the state for the restoration and reconstruction of temples especially those listed in the 'Janpadiya Sanrakshit Mandir' (district-protected temples) category or those that hold religious, mythological or historical importance. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath (PTI)
The order, issued by principal secretary (religious affairs) Mukesh Kumar Meshram, establishes a structured approach to identify and renovate temples that are in a dilapidated condition but continue to be of public importance.
'Many temples across the state are in extremely poor condition,' he said. 'The government has been receiving numerous requests from citizens, dignitaries and public representatives for their restoration.'
Under the new guidelines, priority will be given to temples that attract a larger number of devotees, pilgrims, and tourists, and those in the most deteriorated state. The initiative specifically targets temples that are protected by the state archaeological department of Uttar Pradesh.
A notable aspect of the scheme is the preference given to projects where 50% of the restoration cost can be covered through donations, CSR (corporate social responsibility) funds, or other sources, creating a public-private partnership model for heritage conservation.
According to Meshram, a statewide survey to find eligible temples was being conducted.
'Survey has already been completed in around 40 of 75 districts,' he said, adding 'We will also include temples that are more than 100 years old and established on government land but are still not protected by the state archeological department.'
'In U.P, there are 267 protected monuments, including around 150 small and big temples,' director, state archeological department, Renu Dwivedi said.
The government has established a robust selection mechanism that involves multiple levels of scrutiny. The directorate of religious affairs will form a technical committee that must include archaeological conservation experts and temple architecture specialists to examine proposals.
A high-level committee chaired by the principal secretary of religious affairs will make the final selection of temples for restoration. This committee will include representatives from the culture department, state archaeological directorate, INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage), architecture experts from APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, and retired archaeologists from the Archaeological Survey of India.
The guidelines also provide for exceptional cases, allowing restoration work to proceed with the chief minister's approval under unavoidable circumstances.
Officials have been instructed to follow a detailed format for submitting proposals, which requires information about the temple's history, religious significance, current management, ownership details, annual income, and estimated restoration costs.
Modern documentation, including photographs, drone video views, and Google Earth maps, will also be required.
This initiative comes as part of the state government's broader efforts to promote cultural tourism and preserve historical monuments across Uttar Pradesh, home to numerous ancient temples dating back several centuries.

'Symbol Of Confusion': Imran Khan's Party, Others Blast Bilawal Bhutto Over Extradition Remark

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari continues to face backlash in Pakistan after he suggested individuals like Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar should be extradited to India. As the controversy over Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari's remark on the extradition of Pakistani individuals continues to flare in Pakistan, now former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has dubbed the country's foreign minister a symbol of confusion. According to a report with Dawn, PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram said Bilawal's proposal was ill-advised and detrimental to Pakistan's national security narrative. He also said such statements humiliate the country on international platforms. 'We fail to understand why Bilawal is so keen on appeasing India," Akram said, per the report. The PTI spokesperson also said that Bilawal was proving time and again that he lacked political wisdom, vision, and understanding of regional geopolitics. 'Bilawal has become a symbol of confusion and contradiction in Pakistan's foreign policy discourse," he said. 'The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was founded by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on the legacy of Kashmir, but today, Bilawal is betraying that legacy by pursuing political gains at the expense of Kashmiri blood," he added. Later, Pakistan Markazi Muslim League, a political offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)/ Jamaat ud Dawa (JuD), in a statement alleged India was involved in terrorism with Pakistan and that it (India) had been the mastermind of terror campaigns in Pakistan and other parts of the world, The Times Of India reported. 'Bilawal Bhutto is not a true Muslim; how can he offer my father like this?" Talha Saeed said. During an interview with Al Jazeera, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday said that his country had no objection to extraditing 'individuals of concern" to India as a confidence-building measure, as long as New Delhi showed willingness to cooperate in the process. His remarks came as he responded to a question about extraditing LeT chief Hafiz Saeed and Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar as possible concessions and good-faith gestures to India, Dawn newspaper reported. 'As part of a comprehensive dialogue with Pakistan, where terrorism is one of the issues that we discuss, I am sure Pakistan would not be opposed to any of these things," Bilawal said. Both LeT and JeM have been banned by Pakistan, according to the National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta), while Saeed, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind, is currently serving a 33-year sentence for terror financing, and Azhar, a UN-designated global terrorist, has been proscribed by Nacta. Bilawal said that cases prosecuted against these 'individuals" were those related to Pakistan, such as terrorist financing. However, he noted that prosecuting them for cross-border terrorism was difficult due to what he claimed was 'noncompliance" from Delhi. 'India is refusing to comply with certain basic elements that require that conviction to take place," he said. 'It's important to present evidence within these courts, for people to come over from India to testify, to put up with whatever the counter-accusations will be." 'If India is willing to be cooperative in that process, I am sure there will be no hurdle in extraditing any individual of concern," Bilawal added. He also expressed concern about India's vow to pursue terrorists, calling it a 'new abnormal". 'This does not serve the interests of Pakistan, and it does not serve the interests of India," he added. Pressed on the whereabouts of Saeed and Azhar, Bilawal stated that the former was incarcerated, while Islamabad believes the latter is in Afghanistan. 'It is factually not correct that Hafiz Saeed is a free man; he is in the custody of the Pakistani state," he maintained, stating that Islamabad has been unable to arrest Azhar. 'It is our belief that he is in Afghanistan," Bilawal stated. 'If and when the Indian government shares information that he is on Pakistani soil, we will be more than happy to arrest him," he said. Donald Trump says ‘first tariff letters' to be sent at 9.30 PM IST today

US President Donald Trump confirmed that he would start sending other countries the first letters on tariffs and trade deals on Monday, ahead of a deadline for the paused levies to take effect. 'I am pleased to announce that the UNITED STATES TARIFF Letters, and/or Deals, with various Countries from around the World, will be delivered starting 12:00 P.M. (Eastern), Monday, July 7th,' Trump said on his Truth Social network Sunday. So far, Washington has finalized deals only with the United Kingdom and Vietnam, while reaching a temporary agreement with China to reduce exceptionally high tariffs on each other's goods. Trump said he planned to send '12, maybe 15' tariff notification letters on Monday, PTI reported. He added, 'I think we'll have most countries done by July 9, either a letter or a deal,' noting that some agreements had already been reached. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed that the new tariffs would take effect on August 1 but rejected the notion that the date was a delay tactic, AFP reported. Also Read: Donald Trump's tariff letters to hit 12 countries as trade deadline chaos looms 'The President is setting the rates and the deals right now,' Lutnick said. Senior advisor Bessent also dismissed suggestions that August 1 marked a new deadline. 'It's not a new deadline. We are saying this is when it's happening. If you want to speed things up, go ahead. If you want to stick with the old rates, that's your decision,' he explained, as reported by AFP. Bessent noted that the strategy was to apply 'maximum pressure,' citing the European Union as an example of a negotiating partner now making significant progress after initial reluctance. Still, unease persisted among several countries. Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated on Sunday that he 'won't easily compromise' in trade talks with Washington. Meanwhile, BRICS leaders representing fast-growing economies such as Brazil, Russia, India, and China meeting in Rio de Janeiro expressed 'serious concerns' over what they described as 'indiscriminate' and potentially illegal import tariffs, warning of their impact on global trade. I am pleased to announce that the UNITED STATES TARIFF Letters, and/or Deals, with various Countries from around the World, will be delivered starting 12:00 P.M. (Eastern), Monday, July 7th. In response, Trump lashed out at BRICS, warning, 'Any country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy.'

UAE Golden Visa: Netizens weigh pros, say ‘taxpayers celebrating like they won lottery'

Indians can now get the United Arab Emirates government's Golden Visa for life time. It's based on nomination, not on investments, and costs ₹ 23 lakh. Sources told news agency PTI that under the 'new nomination-based visa policy,' Indians can now enjoy the UAE's Golden Visa for life by paying a one-time fee of AED 1,00,000 (INR around 23.30 lakh). They claimed that over 5,000 Indians will apply for this nomination-based visa in three months. Until now, one of the ways to get Dubai's Golden Visa from India was to invest in property whose value should be at least AED Two Million ( ₹ 4.66 crore), or invest a large amount in business in the country. The UAE's latest visa policy has created a buzz on the internet. One X user Suraj Balakrishnan posted said, 'The ₹ 23 lakh UAE Golden Visa seems like a migration ticket, but in reality, it's more of a status flex for Indian elites.' He claimed that 'for many HNIs [High Net Worth Individual], the Golden Visa isn't about leaving India; it's about a backup option, global mobility, and just something to flaunt at a party.' However, another social media user believed, 'When a nation values your potential more than your passport, migration becomes clarity not escape.' Meanwhile, one X user posted, 'If the UAE Golden Visa for ₹ 23 lakhs news is true, it is game over for urban India.' Another mentioned that the quality of life and other basic amenities 'are far superior in UAE.' One person believed the new visa policy may prove 'Incredible For Indian Professionals and HNIs'. He listed the benefits Indians could get in the UAE: '0 Income Tax; Strict Law and Order; Ease of Doing Business; World Class Infrastructure.' One user questioned India's 'oppressive tax regime' and said that the UAE Golden Visa Policy 'will be a booster shot for Indian investors sick of India's tax terrorism & bureaucratic harassment.' Another commented, 'UAE is giving Golden Visa for 23 lakhs and taxpayers are celebrating it as if they won a lottery.' He said, 'It's such a hopeless situation for taxpayers in this country that even after paying so much tax, they don't get anything in return. They're just looking for the first oppertunity to exit from country.' The user added that other countries are making friendly policies to 'grab Indian talents and HNI while our Govt is busy taxing GST on health insurance even after taking Health and education cess.' After getting the Golden Visa, one gets the freedom to bring his or her family members to Dubai. 'You can also keep servants and drivers based on this visa. You can do any business or professional work here,' Rayad Kamal Ayub, Managing Director of Rayad Group, said. He said the property-based Golden Visa ends in case of property sale or division, but the nomination-based visa will remain forever. The Golden Visa nomination process is an agreement between the UAE and its (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) CEPA signatory/partner countries. This is a pilot project which has started with India and Bangladesh and will soon include China and other CEPA countries. RayadGroup and VFS have been chosen to vet the applicants and then forward them to the UAE authorities.
