
Integrating AI in your business can be a double-edged sword
The AI sales pitch is irresistible: automated customer service, hyper-personalised engagement, razor-sharp inventory forecasting. But AI, like any tool, requires skill to wield.
'AI isn't magic; it's math and data,' said Matthew Elliot, chief delivery officer at tech consultancy CloudSmiths. 'The more visibility you have into how it works and what it's doing, the safer your outcomes will be.'
'Safe' is the key word here. While AI can give any business an edge, it can just as easily entrench inequality, expose private data, or simply, much like humans, make bad calls.
Riskier than you think
According to Wendy Tembedza, partner at Webber Wentzel, the issue isn't whether or not to use AI – because most businesses already do. The problems creep in when the risks of its usage are not rigorously assessed.
'Businesses must carefully consider the intended use case of any AI tool and conduct a risk assessment prior to implementation,' she advised. 'This helps manage the risks that may arise from incorrect or inappropriate use.'
Those risks include exposure to legal liability if systems fail to meet ethical or compliance standards. If an AI tool inadvertently discriminates, say by offering preferential pricing or marketing to customers living in urban areas that shop online, it poses the risk of enforcing bias.
'In a society where South Africans have unequal access to the internet, AI tools that learn only from online behaviour run the risk of generating biased results,' Tembedza warned. 'The resulting insights may fail to reflect the actual behaviours and preferences of the wider customer base.'
Bad inputs, bad outcomes
Much of the risk begins with the data. AI tools need clean, well-structured, and representative data to train on.
'Bad inputs make bad decisions,' Elliot said. 'If you don't know where your data came from or how your model behaves, you're flying blind.'
TymeBank chief technology officer, Bruce Paveley agrees on that point. 'Bank data is carefully selected and scrubbed to ensure we don't put dirty data into our AI tools,' he said. 'We also allow our AI tools to use learning from other reliable sources to avoid bias toward our own ideas.'
What is 'dirty' data?
This refers to information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated, hindering the performance and reliability of AI models
Elliot reckons that bias is a human problem as much as it is a technical issue, and if your model isn't trained on diverse, representative data, it will leave people behind.
To mitigate this, CloudSmiths has developed workflows that stress-tests models against real-world scenarios, using tools such as 'Objective Lens' to detect underrepresentation and misclassification. 'If your AI doesn't work for everyone, it doesn't really work,' Elliot said.
Inventory gains, infrastructure pains
Inventory management is one of AI's most lucrative use cases. Predictive tools can anticipate buying trends and automate restocking, which reduces waste. But again, the model is only as smart as the data it learns from.
'In practice, many retailers do not have centralised or well-organised data sets,' Tembedza said. 'If data used to train AI models are outdated, inconsistent or inaccurate, no level of technical sophistication can compensate.'
Even when the data is right, legacy IT systems often aren't. 'Many retailers continue to operate on legacy information technology systems that may not support the integration of the AI tools they intend to implement,' Tembedza added.
In Africa, up to 60% of businesses cited IT infrastructure as a major barrier to AI implementation, a survey by cybersecurity company Fortinet found.
Modern, cloud-first businesses like TymeBank are less encumbered, but even their barriers are not always technical.
'The challenge was more adoption by our team members rather than a technical limitation,' said Paveley. 'Education and exposure were key enablers to get our team to embrace AI as a productivity tool rather than one that threatens their jobs.'
Leak risks of generative AI
When it comes to businesses that adopt and use AI, the most insidious risk does not necessarily come from a chatbot gone rogue but rather from employees pasting confidential information into ChatGPT.
'Never assume off-the-shelf AI is private by default,' Elliot said. He sees companies frequently underestimating the risk of intellectual property exposure and data leaks from generative AI tools.
His advice:
Use air-gapped or private models for anything involving intellectual property.
Train staff on what's safe to input.
Review AI governance legislation, like the EU's AI Act.
Establish monitoring and evaluation frameworks from day one.
'There needs to be a policy to govern, rather than restrict, usage of AI in our business,' Paveley said. 'Our staff need to complete AI training to ensure they understand the power of productivity improvements but also for awareness of the associated risks.'
Boost engagement, don't alienate
Done right, the shiny promise of personalisation through AI can boost engagement. If not, it reinforces stereotypes and alienates customers and clients.
'The most ethical AI is also the most useful,' Elliot said. 'If users trust the experience, they are more likely to engage with it – and that's good for everyone.'
'Personalisation shouldn't enforce stereotypes; it should surprise you, teach you something new, or reflect who you're becoming, not just who you've been.'
Helpful or harmful?
For all its potential, AI certainly doesn't solve problems on its own and certainly not by default.
'The questions are similar from what we hear every day from our South African and UK clients,' Elliot said. 'Typically it's concerns around safety, fairness, cost or return on investment. It seems most businesses are desperately trying to minimise AI risk while staying competitive.'

How the Two-Pot system is affecting South African retirement funds
South Africans are increasingly withdrawing from their retirement savings due to the Two-Pot system, raising concerns about long-term financial stability and the implications for the economy. The Two-Pot system, designed to offer South Africans a lifeline in the event of a serious rainy day, has seen such high demand for withdrawals that experts are concerned that people will have only two-thirds of their savings left. Changes in the law, which came into effect last September, made it possible for people who have retirement savings to access a portion of them now, with the rest remaining invested until they stop working. Under the changes to the law, one-third of retirement savings went into a pot from which withdrawals could be made, and that allows people to pull out money once a year in an amount between R2,000 and R30,000. But there are drawbacks. In addition to the fact that the cash that is taken is subject to tax, any amount due to the South African Revenue Service (Sars) in unpaid tax is deducted from the payout. Those are the short-term consequences – longer-term, withdrawals now will exacerbate South Africa's already low savings rate. South Africans have a negative savings rate of 1.2%, according to Trading Economics. Hwalani Mabaso, executive of everyday advice and distribution at Absa Advice and Investments, says that the tax on withdrawals 'came as a rude awakening to some who saw their expected payout significantly reduced. Financial service providers also had to play catch-up, with reports of some charging excessive admin fees. The learning curve was steep – not just for members, but for the industry itself,' she notes. Michelle Hawkins, senior tax expert at PKF Octagon, says that Sars has collected R15 billion in taxes from Two-Pot withdrawals, of which R1bn was in overdue payments. Mabaso's calculations indicate that a R30,000 withdrawal could mean R22,000 lands in accounts after withholding tax, which doesn't take into account any overdue tax. Video Player is loading. Lehohla tells Personal Finance that pulling money out of an already meager savings pool detracts from fund managers, such as the Public Investment Corporation, being able to invest in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and mining. This, Lehohla says, undermines the architecture of pension funds, adversely affecting South Africa's growth prospects. 'If you draw from it, you destroy a nation.' Gross domestic product (GDP) gained a better-than-expected 0.1% in the first quarter of the year after reaching 0.6% in 2024. Phil le Feuvre, member of the South African Reward Association, says that nearly R57bn has been withdrawn from retirement funds since last September. For context, the sector was worth about R4.6 trillion in 2022, the latest research available. Le Feuvre says there have, so far, been almost four million withdrawals, out of an estimated 18.6 million retirement fund members in South Africa. Of these, about 12% were repeat withdrawals following the start of the new tax year in March, he adds. Hawkins is concerned that there have been repeated withdrawals. 'This behaviour raised concerns that the system might be used more as a revolving credit facility than an emergency buffer,' says Mabaso. Yet, Mabaso says the 'bold and necessary reform' has benefitted those South Africans who are battling rising costs as it has been a 'financial lifeline'. She says, in addition to making emergency funds available without totally sabotaging long-term retirement savings, it has also had a macroeconomic benefit. 'Analysts estimate the system injected R40bn to R100bn of liquidity into the economy, boosting consumption and tax revenue, thanks to SARS collecting income tax on withdrawals. Some reports even suggest it could contribute up to 0.5% to GDP growth in 2025,' Mabaso says. Mabaso says, however, that the 'freedom to withdraw comes at a cost'. She explains that someone who pulls money out each year could reduce their retirement nest egg by 30% to 33%, which could be 'a potentially devastating impact in old age'. Hawkins says research conducted by various financial institutions has shown that most drawdowns are going towards debt, school fees, groceries, and other basic necessities. 'The pressures of the cost of living are the key driver for the two-pot withdrawals,' she says. 'Evidence suggests that a portion of the withdrawals is being used to pay off high-interest loans or, worse, fund consumer purchases, defeating the system's intent to promote financial resilience,' Mabaso explains. Le Feuvre adds that some beneficiaries used funds as a deposit to buy a car, leading to increased debt in the long run. 'Overall, the funds helped consumers reduce financial strain but also contributed to new credit uptake.' Mabaso says, like all policy tools, Two-Pot's success depends on how wisely it's used. She says people need educational support to understand tax, compound interest, and long-term implications. Debt collection becoming a problem in SA – these are your rights
Many South Africans are facing unfair or illegal debt collection tactics. South African consumers are struggling to make ends meet and more often than not, they turn to credit and debt when they run out of money long before month-end due to high prices and interest rates. They are unable to pay their debts and now debt collection is becoming a problem. With the cost of living climbing steadily, more and more South Africans are finding themselves struggling with debt and instead of getting support, many are pushed around by unfair and sometimes illegal debt collection tactics. According to Experian, nearly 10 million South Africans are more than three months behind on their debt payments and instead of understanding or help, many face aggressive calls, threats and pressure to pay up, even when the debt should not be collected anymore. ALSO READ: How to deal with debt collectors Debt collection harassment Rynhardt de Lange, director and head of legal at Milaw Legal, says creditor harassment remains a major issue in the debt industry. One of the most common tricks he sees is how Section 129 notices are misused. 'Section 129 notices are meant to open a conversation between the consumer and creditor before any legal action but these days, they are often sent like a final warning meant to scare people instead of helping them figure out a way forward.' He says consumers often deal with calls late at night, extortion threats and being pushed to pay debts that are too old to collect. South African law protects consumers by limiting when collectors can call, requiring collectors to be registered and banning the collection of old (prescribed) debts. Unfortunately, De Lange says, these rules are regularly ignored and to make matters worse, financial pressure has been increasing steadily over the past few years. ALSO READ: Households still credit stressed while their finances weakened Difficult times cause more disputes about debt collections 'Since 2021 the prime interest rate climbed from 7% to 10.75%, while the cost of essentials such as fuel, food and housing surged sharply. Over the past five years, overall inflation increased by 26.7%, with food prices soaring by around 40%. 'The cost of electricity and household fuels saw the largest jump, increasing by 68.1%. Education expenses also increased significantly, with primary and secondary school fees up by 31.3%. With this kind of financial pressure, it is no surprise that disputes with creditors are increasing.' However, he says, consumers have the right to stand up for themselves. 'In the end, most South Africans are not trying to dodge their debts. They just want a fair chance to get back on track without being bullied.' Latest petrol price increase puts SA consumers on backfoot again
With a fuel price increase hot on the heels of increases in rates and taxes in the metros, there seems to be no way out for consumers. The latest petrol price increase puts struggling South African consumers on the backfoot again after a few months of softer fuel prices, which also led to lower inflation as well as lower interest rates. Now geopolitical issues in the Middle East sent the oil price soaring again and South African consumers are paying the price. Hot on the heels of the small decrease in the price of petrol in June this year, the news of a substantial hike in the price of petrol from 2 July came as a shock to motorists across the country. South Africans were counting on a little relief at the pumps in July to ease the financial burden that has driven millions of households to the edge of despair. The July increase pushes the price of 95 Unleaded petrol up by 55 cents to R21.87 per litre and 93 Unleaded up by 52 cents to R21.79, while diesel increases by between 82 and 84 cents per litre. Thankfully, the rand remained surprisingly resilient in the face of the resultant market turbulence. Fuel price hike on top of increase in rates and taxes As if this is not enough reason to dash any last hope of a respite, Tuesday 1 July marked the start of the municipal financial year when local authorities increase rates and taxes. This means households in major metros across the country will see increases to monthly rates for electricity, water, sanitation, refuse removal and property rates they pay. South Africans can expect above-inflation hikes this year as cities continue to operate under strained conditions and energy experts are warning that households could see their bills shoot up anywhere between 30% and 80%, especially if their consumption is typically low. This is largely due to a new tariff structure being implemented by Eskom, which aims to align prices with the cost of supply and to reduce subsidies. ALSO READ: Here's how to manage household electricity usage as municipal tariff increases kick in Against this grim backdrop, the latest 2025 Energy Market Projections report, compiled by Cresco in collaboration with Standard Bank Corporate and Investment Banking, shows that while load shedding may have taken a backseat temporarily, a new energy crisis is looming if the country fails to build new capacity. According to the report, South Africa is not adding new energy generation capacity fast enough to prevent another severe electricity crisis when Eskom begins decommissioning its coal plants. Behind this is the fact that the country is not increasing its energy supply at a sufficient rate to facilitate faster economic growth, which means that any sharp pickup in activity will result in demand outstripping supply. Living increases force struggling consumers to use credit Neil Roets, CEO of Debt Rescue, warns with no end in sight to the volley of living cost increases, coupled with consumers already cutting back as much as they can, the latest fuel price increase will cut deeply into the little disposable income people still have left, if they have any to spare at all. 'In fact, along with the soaring electricity prices and the municipal rate hikes in July, millions of households will be forced towards financial disaster. This is a red flag that should not be ignored. Along with this, the salaries of South Africans fail to keep up with rising living costs, leading many to turn to debt simply to survive each month and buy the basics they need to survive.' This is echoed by insights from the latest BankservAfrica Take-home Pay Index (BTPI), which tracks approximately 3.8 million salary earners in South Africa. It revealed that the nominal average take-home pay decreased to R17 296 in May 2025, 1.3% lower than the R17 532 registered in April. Unsurprisingly, he says, this is also a major contributor to the country's escalating consumer debt crisis, with a recent Debt Rescue survey, conducted to measure the real plight of indebted consumers, showing that half of the participants polled (50%) cannot afford basic necessities like food, electricity, or fuel due to a lack of available funds. A full 50% said they have had to turn to credit to pay for these everyday needs in the past 12 months. Roets says this reflects the vicious cycle of poverty and debt that has become a way of life for millions of South African consumers, seriously impeding their and their families' survival. 'It is a bitter irony that this coincides with National Savings Month, a time meant to promote saving, yet many South Africans can barely cover essentials, let alone set money aside.'
