2025 Lexus IS500 Ultimate Edition First Look: Last of the V-8s, Ultimately

Motor Trend20-05-2025
It's almost improbable that Lexus still sells the IS500 F Sport Performance, the version of its otherwise conventional IS compact sport sedan that debuted for 2022 with a 472-hp 5.0-liter V-8. The engine has no turbo- or superchargers and is assisted in no way by electrification. It's just a honkin' V-8 mixing air, fuel, and spark to propel a relatively small four-door sport sedan in a way that none of its four- and six-cylinder, forced-induction (and even all-electric) competitors offer any longer. Almost to celebrate its own audacity, Lexus is introducing a limited run of 500 IS500 Ultimate Editions.

The modifications are more than the usual badge-and-sticker job, too, with Lexus swapping in larger 15.0-inch ventilated front brake rotors, red-painted six-piston Brembo brake calipers, and high-friction brake pads in place of the regular IS500's 14.0-inch, four-piston front stoppers. Also added? A lightweight set of 19-inch forged aluminum BBS wheels (in place of the regular IS500's Enkei pieces). Lexus also is introducing a new-to-IS paint color on the Ultimate Edition, "Wind," a cool gray that really pops with the matte-black-painted BBS wheels.
Inside, there are red seatbelts, a serialized badge commemorating the specific vehicle you buy, and red accents on the gauges and analog dashboard clock. Lexus even programs an Ultimate Edition–exclusive startup animation for the 8.0-inch digital gauge cluster display, a neat detail that seems easy in abstract but goes missed by far too many automakers when churning out special-edition variants. The seats and dash are slathered in NuLuxe faux leather and sueded elements, again part of an overall "color theme" of Circuit Red and Black.
Lexus could slather the entire car in Barney purple paint and dye the interior green to match, and it likely wouldn't dull our enthusiasm for this old-school sport sedan. Sure, the IS500 F Sport Performance barely outruns the length of its name—it's quick but not crazy quick, and its handling is better suited to fast roads than racetracks—but it more than makes up for any performance shortcomings by delivering far more visceral feels than much of the zippier but ultimately less soulful competition.
The IS500 Ultimate Edition therefore receives the regular IS500 F Sport Performance's 5.0-liter V-8 with no notes. We don't have any, either. So, buyers can look forward to 472 hp, 395 lb-ft of torque, a (somewhat lazy) eight-speed automatic transmission, and only the rear tires transferring that V-8's power to the ground. The soundtrack is great, and because the engine makes its power up high in the rev range, you practically must wind the V-8 out in order to access it.
The only question we have is this: With Lexus dubbing this special edition IS500 the "Ultimate Edition," is it implying some finality? The IS is nearing the end of its current life cycle, so this could be the V-8 version's swan song (although there isn't yet mention of the non-Ultimate Edition—which is still on Lexus's website—going away for 2025). This same engine is still powering the similarly old RC F coupe, too. But boy, we sure hope not—we're not ready to let go of the naturally aspirated V-8–powered, small sport sedan quite yet, even if BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and others have.

Lexus LFR Supercar Interior Revealed

The new Toyota/Lexus sports car duo is back for day two at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Both the road-going model and its race car counterpart have already climbed the famous hill again, but what really caught our attention was the post-run interview with the development drivers. We've learned that the cars have been in the works for over four years, with circuit testing kicking off about a year and a half ago. They're still not quite finished, but judging by the interior, the official reveal can't be far off. Since there are no press shots available yet, we'll have to make do with screenshots from the livestream, which show the cabin of the street-legal version. Photo by: Goodwood We used Photoshop and a bit of AI wizardry to enhance the brightness and exposure of the top image, bringing out more details. The unedited screenshot is attached right above. Featuring a predominantly red interior, the LFR (name confirmed) comes with a pair of carbon bucket seats separated by a wide center console. While a manual gearbox was never realistically expected, the new Lexus (or is it Toyota ?) supercar features a small selector for the automatic transmission. The two-tone dashboard hosts a decently sized touchscreen and what appear to be physical switches located just below. Unfortunately, there are also some piano black accents and hexagonal side air vents. Much like the instrument cluster, the rearview mirror is digital, displaying footage from a rear-facing camera. Overall, the cabin feels more like that of a true sports car compared to the RC F it's supposedly replacing. That would make sense, considering the LFR is believed to be a road-going version of the Toyota Gazoo Racing GT3. Lexus still won't confirm what powers the two-seater coupe, but based on the sounds both cars are making at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a V-8 seems highly likely. Whether it's twin-turbocharged and/or hybrid remains to be seen, though that's what reports from Japan are claiming. Photo by: Goodwood The GR GT3 is expected to start racing in 2026, four years after the namesake concept debuted at the Tokyo Auto Salon. That suggests the wait is nearly over, not just for the race car, but also for its street-legal counterpart. The Toyota version will likely remain track-only, while the Lexus is expected to be the one with a license plate. Look for both to be revealed either later this year or in early 2026. Lexus LFA Successor Makes First Official Outing on Goodwood Hill: Video

The upcoming Lexus LFA successor, which will possibly be called the LFR, made its first official public appearance this week. The new supercar can be seen—and heard—making a parade lap up the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. After being spotted testing at several tracks around the world, Lexus's GT3 race car twin made the parade lap alongside the road-bound model. Three years ago, Toyota introduced the world to its GR GT3 race car concept. In the years since, we've seen that original concept develop into what appears to be a Lexus LFA successor and a racing version that looks poised to replace the aging RC F GT3 car. We've caught spy shots of the pair testing around the world. Last month, we even had one Car and Driver reader send in some shots of the road car testing in Southern California. Now, the pair has made their first official public appearance. Joined by a heavily camouflaged version of the race car, the upcoming supercar made a parade run up the hill at this week's Goodwood Festival of Speed. While some manufacturers attack Lord March's driveway with a vengeance, the Lexus twins maintained a more leisurely pace. KGP Photography | Car and Driver There still hasn't been any official confirmation from Toyota or Lexus about what the new supercar is hiding under its hood, but the exhaust heard in the video seems to confirm the rumors of a hybrid twin-turbo V-8. As we've seen in previous spy shots (pictured above), the road car was equipped with a prominent duckbill rear spoiler, while the GT3 car sported a kitchen-counter-sized wing. Given that the supercar has been testing on public roads, we think it's a safe assumption that the car will debut as a 2027 model. That theory is supported by the fact that the Lexus RC F is homologated for GT3 racing through the 2026 season. If Lexus wants to make the transition seamlessly, it'll need to launch the car sometime next year. By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver. His new goal is to delay the inevitable demise of his 2010 Volkswagen Golf. Read full bio
