The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Monday that it is closing a preliminary evaluation into 454,840 Nissan vehicles over engine failure after the Japanese automaker issued a recall in June. The probe, which was opened in December 2023, alleged that engine failures in certain Nissan vehicles were leading to loss of motive power. Consumers also reported engine knocking noises. An engine failure could result in a fire if internal components detached and damaged the engine block, creating a hole that allowed engine oil to reach hot surfaces, the U.S. auto safety authority said.NHTSA said that a total of 1,878 incidents were reported, of which 12 resulted in either crash or a fire. The probe included under its scope certain models of Nissan Rogue Altima and luxury vehicles, Infiniti's QX50 and QX55, the NHTSA report said.Nissan's June recall fix involves a dealer inspection for metal debris in the engine oil pan.If no debris is found, dealers will change the oil and carry out minor repairs based on engine type; if debris is found, the engine may need major repairs or replacement. The Yokohama-based company also agreed to extend the vehicle warranty of the impacted vehicles to 10 years and 120,000 miles after the inspection.

Rolls-Royces bought from Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan land realtor with Rs 40 lakh tax bill: RTO cites years of illegal use in Karnataka; local road tax unpaid
BENGALURU: A flashy garage featuring Rolls-Royce cars, once owned by Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan, has now cost a Bengaluru-based realtor and politician nearly Rs 40 lakh in unpaid taxes. On Wednesday morning, a team of RTO officials swooped down on the Vasanthnagar residence of Yusuf Sharif, also known as KGF Babu, armed with evidence that he was operating Maharashtra-registered luxury cars in Bengaluru without paying the required state taxes. KGF Babu purchased a RollsRoyce Phantom from Amitabh Bachchan and a Rolls Royce Ghost from Aamir Khan. Officials said in 2021, field staff from the RTO impounded the Rolls-Royce bearing registration number MH 02 BB 0002. The department collected a penalty of Rs 5,500 before releasing the vehicle. This decision irked junior officials, who were not convinced by the move and believed it was a strong case for recovering the pending tax. After a gap of four years, on Wednesday, the RTO once again visited KGF Babu-this time with substantial proof that the cars were still being used in the state without paying the applicable taxes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 most beautiful women in the world Undo An official said: "Out-of-state registered vehicles must pay road tax if they are used in Karnataka for over a year. A notice was issued in 2021 for the luxury car purchased from Amitabh Bachchan. The other car, bought from Aamir Khan, has been in use since 2023, and we have gathered sufficient evidence of its operation within the state. After briefing KGF Babu about the rules and clarifying his queries, we asked him to pay the tax. He paid by cheque on the same day. For MH 02-BB-0002, Rs 19.8 lakh was collected, and for MH 11-AX-0001, Rs 18.5 lakh was paid." The official said that in 2021, when the initial tax demand was raised, KGF Babu claimed that the vehicle he purchased from Amitabh Bachchan was in Karnataka only for a month and would soon be returned to Mumbai permanently. "After the vehicle was impounded and later released, he briefly sent it back to Mumbai but soon brought it back to Bengaluru. We now have sufficient records of the vehicles' usage on Bengaluru roads, including footage captured by traffic surveillance cameras." 'Mistake out of ignorance' Later, KGF Babu told the media: "I have a passion for buying cars from celebrities. I bought these cars from Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. I already paid lifetime road tax for these vehicles in Maharashtra-Rs 50 lakh for one and Rs 35 lakh for the other. I wasn't aware that I had to pay tax again in Karnataka. I run a business in Mumbai, and these vehicles were registered to my office address there. They operate in Mumbai for 15 days and in Karnataka for the other 15 days. " He added: "On Wednesday, officials from the transport department visited my house without any prior notice. They informed me of the applicable tax, and I cleared the dues immediately. I made a mistake out of ignorance. I urge others who own vehicles registered outside Karnataka to voluntarily approach their local RTOs and clear any pending tax dues."

US automakers say Trump's Japan tariff deal puts them at a disadvantage
US automakers are concerned about President Donald Trump's agreement to tariff Japanese vehicles at 15 per cent, saying they will face steeper import taxes on steel, aluminum and parts than their competitors. We need to review all the details of the agreement, but this is a deal that will charge lower tariffs on Japanese autos with no US content, said Matt Blunt, president of the American Automotive Policy Council, which represents the Big 3 American automakers, General Motors, Ford and Jeep-maker Stellantis. Blunt said in an interview the US companies and workers definitely are at a disadvantage because they face a 50 per cent tariff on steel and aluminum and a 25 per cent tariff on parts and finished vehicles, with some exceptions for products covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that went into effect in 2020. The domestic automaker reaction reveals the challenge of enforcing policies across the world economy, showing that for all of Trump's promises there can be genuine tradeoffs from policy choices that risk serious blowback in politically important states such as Michigan and Wisconsin, where automaking is both a source of income and of identity. Trump portrayed the trade framework as a major win after announcing it on Tuesday, saying it would add hundreds of thousands of jobs to the US economy and open the Japanese economy in ways that could close a persistent trade imbalance. The agreement includes a 15 per cent tariff that replaces the 25 per cent import tax the Republican president had threatened to charge starting on Aug 1. Japan would also put together $550 billion to invest in US projects, the White House said. The framework with Japan will remove regulations that prevent American vehicles from being sold in that country, the White House has said, adding that it would be possible for vehicles built in Detroit to be shipped directly to Japan and ready to be sold. But Blunt said that foreign auto producers, including the US, Europe and South Korea, have just a 6 per cent share in Japan, raising scepticism that simply having the open market that the Trump administration says will exist in that country will be sufficient. Tough nut to crack, and I'd be very surprised if we see any meaningful market penetration in Japan, Blunt said. Major Japanese automakers Toyota, Honda and Nissan did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the trade framework, nor did Autos Drive America or the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, organisations that also represent the industry. There is the possibility that the Japanese framework would give automakers and other countries grounds for pushing for changes in the Trump administration's tariffs regime. The president has previously said that flexibility in import tax negotiations is something he values. The USMCA is up for review next year. Ford, GM and Stellantis do have every right to be upset, said Sam Fiorani, vice president at consultancy AutoForecast Solutions. But Honda, Toyota, and Nissan still import vehicles from Mexico and Canada, where the current levels of tariffs can be higher than those applied to Japanese imports. Most of the high-volume models from Japanese brands are already produced in North America. Fiorani noted that among the few exceptions are the Toyota 4Runner, the Mazda CX-5 and the Subaru Forester, but most of the other imports fill niches that are too small to warrant production in the US. There will be negotiations between the US and Canada and Mexico, and it will probably result in tariffs no higher than 15 per cent, Fiorani added, but nobody seems to be in a hurry to negotiate around the last Trump administration's free trade agreement.

EV charging stns must operate by Sept-end: Khatri
Nashik: Nashik municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri has set a deadline of Sept-end for civic officials to operate the remaining 13 EV charging stations in the city. NMC proposed 20 EV charging stations at Rs 10 crore through the funds received under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). NMC deployed a Delhi-based private firm to set up the charging stations. The deadline to set up all the EV charging stations was March-end this year, but the civic body could operate seven EV charging stations so far. Hence, the commissioner has instructed civic officials to operate the remaining charging stations. NMC officials said "Work for 10 EV charging stations has completed. We will soon complete the work for the other three stations. All stations should operate by mid-Sept," said an NMC official. These seven locations, where EV charging stations were made operational, include Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, Pramod Mahajan Garden on Gangapur Road, open space of the civic body on Ambad Link Road, Satpur Fire Station, Krishi Nagar Jogging Track in Nashik West Division, Satpur Divisional Office premises, and near Mahatma Nagar Cricket Ground. Each EV charging station has the capacity to charge two four-wheelers and six two-wheelers at a time, said a senior NMC official.
