The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Monday that it is closing a preliminary evaluation into 454,840 Nissan vehicles over engine failure after the Japanese automaker issued a recall in June. The probe, which was opened in December 2023, alleged that engine failures in certain Nissan vehicles were leading to loss of motive power. Consumers also reported engine knocking noises. An engine failure could result in a fire if internal components detached and damaged the engine block, creating a hole that allowed engine oil to reach hot surfaces, the U.S. auto safety authority said.NHTSA said that a total of 1,878 incidents were reported, of which 12 resulted in either crash or a fire. The probe included under its scope certain models of Nissan Rogue Altima and luxury vehicles, Infiniti's QX50 and QX55, the NHTSA report said.Nissan's June recall fix involves a dealer inspection for metal debris in the engine oil pan.If no debris is found, dealers will change the oil and carry out minor repairs based on engine type; if debris is found, the engine may need major repairs or replacement. The Yokohama-based company also agreed to extend the vehicle warranty of the impacted vehicles to 10 years and 120,000 miles after the inspection.

EV charging stns must operate by Sept-end: Khatri
Nashik: Nashik municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri has set a deadline of Sept-end for civic officials to operate the remaining 13 EV charging stations in the city. NMC proposed 20 EV charging stations at Rs 10 crore through the funds received under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). NMC deployed a Delhi-based private firm to set up the charging stations. The deadline to set up all the EV charging stations was March-end this year, but the civic body could operate seven EV charging stations so far. Hence, the commissioner has instructed civic officials to operate the remaining charging stations. NMC officials said "Work for 10 EV charging stations has completed. We will soon complete the work for the other three stations. All stations should operate by mid-Sept," said an NMC official. These seven locations, where EV charging stations were made operational, include Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, Pramod Mahajan Garden on Gangapur Road, open space of the civic body on Ambad Link Road, Satpur Fire Station, Krishi Nagar Jogging Track in Nashik West Division, Satpur Divisional Office premises, and near Mahatma Nagar Cricket Ground. Each EV charging station has the capacity to charge two four-wheelers and six two-wheelers at a time, said a senior NMC official.

EU, US inch closer to 15% trade deal amid looming tariff threats
The European Union and the United States are heading towards a trade deal that would result in a broad tariff of 15% applying to EU goods imported into the United States. read more The European Union and the United States are nearing a trade agreement that would introduce 15 per cent tariffs on European imports, mirroring a deal struck earlier this week between US President Donald Trump and Japan, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. While negotiations continue, the EU is also preparing a countermeasure, a potential 93 billion euro ($109 billion) package of retaliatory tariffs with rates reaching up to 30 per cent should talks fail to produce a deal before the August 1 deadline, the report said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Neither the White House nor a European Union spokesperson responded to Reuters' requests for comment. Reuters also said it could not independently confirm the FT report. Earlier on Wednesday, the European Commission reiterated that its priority remains finding a negotiated settlement with Washington to avoid the 30 per cent tariffs President Trump has threatened to impose on EU goods beginning August 1. In 2024, US imports of vehicles and auto parts from Japan exceeded $55 billion, while the figure from the EU stood at 47.3 billion euros ($55.45 billion). By contrast, US-made cars have a limited share in both the EU and Japanese markets.
