A fit Ben Stokes is one of the great all-rounders in the world, says Nasser Hussain

Captaining a bowling attack that is thin on experience, Ben Stokes has shouldered responsibility right through the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy as he once again led from the front with the ball in the first innings at Manchester. The England captain's five-wicket haul helped them restrict India to 358 as the hosts ended Day 2 at 225/2 to take control of the fourth Test.
Having undergone a knee surgery earlier in the year, coming into the series there were plenty of doubts with regards to Stokes bowling. In the lead-up to the Test series against India, Stokes played only the lone long form game against Zimbabwe as questions were raised as to whether the all-rounder was undercooked. And former England captain Nasser Hussain said Stokes has been on the money with the ball.
'Against India this summer, I cannot remember him bowling a bad spell. He has been England's best bowler in the series. He now has 16 wickets, the most he has taken in a series in his career, and on Thursday he got his first five-wicket haul for eight years. That stat might have surprised some but Stokes has primarily been the fourth seamer in some pretty good attacks, with the likes of Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad and Mark Wood alongside him. If the ball is doing a bit, it is often the front three who get the wickets. If it is not, Stokes is often doing the hard donkey work. He's the one in the enforcer role, banging it halfway down when it's flat. Why do you think he has had so many injuries?' Hussain wrote in his column on Daily Mail.
After bowling his heart out at Lord's, Stokes came up with another impressive outing here at Manchester taking the wickets of Shubman Gill, B Sai Sudharsan, Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar and Anshul Kamboj in the 24 overs he bowled. At Lord's, where he was the Man of the Match, he bowled 44 overs to strangle India with the old ball.
'There were a few questions asked before this series about why he didn't go off and play for the Lions because he hadn't spent any time in middle. But this series has shown why he didn't. When it comes to playing at this level, he will always put on a show. He doesn't need more cricket. In this series, his spells have been getting longer and longer. I see that as someone who is very confident in his body,' Hussain wrote.
Hussain then went on to add the ultimate tribute, saying with his efforts in the Test series Stokes has put his name alongside past great all-rounders. 'You judge a top all-rounder on whether he can get into the side as both a batter and a bowler. Even if his batting has slightly fallen away of late, Stokes is generally someone who can do that. On Thursday he joined Botham, Garfield Sobers and Jacques Kallis as the only players with 10 or more centuries and five or more five-wicket hauls in Tests. This series has only further proved that a fit Ben Stokes is one of the great all-rounders in the world,' Hussain wrote.

Ben Stokes achieves what no other England cricketer could in 148 years of Test cricket, puts India to the sword

It took some time to come but it came at last. England captain Ben Stokes sent cricket statisticians into overdrive by slamming his 14th Test century -- his first in two years -- in the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford in Manchester. The left-handed all-rounder reached the milestone with a leg glance for four off Jasprit Bumrah, ending a personal wait of over two years for a Test hundred. England's Ben Stokes acknowledges fans as he walks after losing his wicket for 141 runs(Action Images via Reuters) Resuming the day on 77 not out, Stokes batted with composure and intent, reaching three figures in 164 balls, including nine boundaries. His celebration was a poignant one — a clenched fist, a glance to the heavens, and a crooked finger gesture in memory of his late father, Ged Stokes, before raising his bat to the roaring Old Trafford crowd. Stokes' last century had come in June 2023 — a blazing 155 against Australia at Lord's. His latest effort was more measured but equally impactful, reinforcing his stature as one of England's great modern Test players. In the process, Stokes also became the first English cricketer in 148 years of Test cricket to achieve the rare double scoring more than 7000 runs along with picking more than 200 wickets in red-ball cricket. Overall, he became the third in the world after Garry Sobers and Jacques Kallis. Double of 7000 runs and 200 wickets in Tests Garry Sobers (8032 runs & 235 wkts) Jacques Kallis (13289 runs & 292 wkts) Ben Stokes (7000* runs & 229 wkts)* England, already leading the five-match series 2-1, posted a mammoth 669, establishing a commanding 311-run lead in the first innings. The innings followed another all-round masterclass from the England captain, who had earlier taken 5 for 72 to help restrict India to 358 in their first innings. With that performance, Stokes became just the fourth England player to score a century and take five wickets in the same Test, joining the legendary trio of Tony Greig, Ian Botham, and Gus Atkinson. Among captains, he became only the fourth overall. Captains with a 100 and 5-fer in the same Test Denis Atkinson (WI) vs AUS, Bridgetown, 1955 Garry Sobers (WI) vs ENG, Leeds, 1966 Mushtaq Mohammad (PAK) vs WI, Port of Spain, 1977 Imran Khan (PAK) vs IND, Faisalabad, 1983 Ben Stokes (ENG) vs IND, Manchester, 2025* After reaching his hundred, Stokes continued to entertain. He drove Washington Sundar straight down the ground for six — though his reaction suggested he thought he might have miscued it — and followed up with a reverse-swept boundary off the very next ball. Stokes finished with 141 off 198 balls. He was out caught off Ravindra Jadeja's bowling. Earlier in the day, England resumed on 544 for 7, with Stokes joined by Liam Dawson, who was making his first Test appearance since 2017. Dawson added only five runs to his overnight score of 21 before a Jasprit Bumrah delivery that kept low crashed into his stumps — a potential warning for India's batsmen. The innings also followed a record-breaking effort by Joe Root, who became the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket with a majestic 150 on Friday.

Stokes ends two-year wait for Test hundred before India collapse in fourth Test

England captain Ben Stokes ended his more than two-year wait for a Test hundred before India sensationally lost two wickets without a run on the scoreboard as the hosts pressed for a series-clinching win at Old Trafford on Saturday. Stokes ends two-year wait for Test hundred before India collapse in fourth Test Stokes' dominant 141 powered England to 669 all out their fifth-highest total of all time on the fourth day of the fourth Test. That gave England, already 2-1 up in this five-match series, a huge first-innings lead of 311 runs. There was still time for India to face a tricky three overs before lunch. And Chris Woakes then raised English hopes of a victory in Manchester with more than a day to spare by striking with successive balls of the first over of India's second innings as both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan fell for ducks. Jaiswal nicked the fourth ball of the over, a good length delivery that seamed away, to first slip where Joe Root dropped a two-handed chance but clung on with one at the second attempt. Next ball Sudharsan, uncertain whether to play or leave, produced a woeful shot that ended with an outside edge to Harry Brook at second slip. India captain Shubman Gill survived a legside hat-trick ball from veteran paceman Woakes but at lunch the tourists were still in dire straits at 1-2. England resumed in the already commanding position of 544-7 after Root had become the second-highest run-scorer in Test history during his majestic 150 on Friday. Stokes, 77 not out overnight after briefly leaving the field with cramp Friday following his first fifty of the series, was in superb touch Saturday. The left-handed batsman twice cover-drove Mohammed Siraj for superb fours as he went to 88. Stokes charged down the pitch to drive Bumrah for three to go to 99 and then spent several deliveries one run short of three figures, with the world's top-ranked Test bowler beating the England skipper on the outside edge. But Stokes went to his century with a leg-glanced four off paceman Bumrah his ninth boundary in 164 balls faced. It was all-rounder Stokes' first Test hundred in over two years following a whirlwind 155 against Australia at Lord's in June 2023. The 34-year-old celebrated his 14th century in 115 Tests by clenching his fist, looking to the sky and making a crooked finger gesture in honour of his late father Ged Stokes before raising his bat to a cheering crowd. His hundred capped a brilliant display with both bat and ball by Stokes, England's leading bowler this series, after the lively fast-medium seamer had taken 5-72 in India's first-innings 358. Stokes is just the fourth England player to take five wickets and score a hundred in the same Test after Tony Greig, Ian Botham who did it five times and the currently sidelined Gus Atkinson. With the shackles off, Stokes then straight drove Washington Sundar for six although his expression suggested he thought he would be caught on the boundary and next ball he reverse swept the off-spinner for four. Stokes then launched Ravindra Jadeja for six but next ball, trying to repeat the stroke, he holed out off the left-arm spinner with England exactly 300 runs ahead at 658-9 before Bryson Carse, who mad a useful 47, was last man out when he too was caught in the deep off Jadeja, who finished with 4-143 from 37.1 overs. jdg/bsp This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.
