Mufti commends Egypt's Gaza reconstruction initiative adopted at Extraordinary Arab Summit
In a statement Wednesday, the mufti stressed that establishing an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with Al Quds (East Jerusalem) as its capital, is a religious, moral and humanitarian duty.
Ayad also praised the unified Arab stance taken up during the summit, considering it a substantial shift that would reclaim the momentum of the Palestinian issue to the conscience of the nation and assert absolute commitment to the two-state solution and explicitly reject any measures that could undermine it.
He further stressed the immense importance of continuing the Arab, Islamic and international support for the Palestinian people.
The grand Mufti also held the Israeli occupation responsible for the deterioration of the humanitarian conditions in Gaza, urging the international community to ratchet up pressure on the occupation to respect international legitimate resolutions and stop its repeated ceasefire violations.
Ayad reiterated Dar al-Ifta's support for all efforts exerted to achieve just and comprehensive peace that will lead to the end of occupation.
He called on the Arab and Muslim countries and the international community to continue their full support for the Palestinian people, rush humanitarian aid to Gaza and shore up the Egyptian initiative on Gaza reconstruction, in a way that brings an end to Israel's incessant aggression.

Portugal to consider recognizing Palestinian state in September - War on Gaza
Portugal will consider recognizing the State of Palestine at the UN in September, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's office said Thursday. France, Britain, and Canada have all recently voiced, in some cases qualified, intentions to diplomatically recognize a Palestinian state. These moves come amid growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israel's 22-month war and five-month blockade have pushed 2.3 million people into famine. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, the death toll from Israel's war since October 7, 2023, has risen to 60,332, with 147,643 injured. The majority of the dead are women and children. Portugal "is considering recognition of the Palestinian state, as part of a procedure that could be concluded during the high‑level week of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, to be held in New York in September," the statement said. The decision was made after "multiple contacts" with partners, given "the extremely worrying developments in the conflict, both from a humanitarian perspective and through repeated references to a possible annexation of Palestinian territories" by Israel, the statement added. A UN-backed international hunger monitoring organisation on Tuesday said: "Famine thresholds have been reached for food consumption in most of the Gaza Strip and for acute malnutrition in Gaza City." The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) alert warned that the "worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip" under Israel's blockade. Portugal may join other countries such as Britain, Canada, and France, which have signalled their intention to recognize the Palestinian state in September. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron said his country would officially recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September, hoping to create collective momentum in this direction. Expat voting concludes in Egypt's 2025 Senate election as ballot count begins - Foreign Affairs
Expat voting in Egypt's 2025 Senate election has concluded, with polling stations closing across most countries after two days of balloting. The overseas vote was conducted at 136 polling stations in Egyptian embassies and consulates across 117 countries, and the ballot counting is now underway. Due to time zone differences, the Egyptian Embassy in New Zealand was the first to close its polls at 12 pm local time on Sunday, while the final station, located in Los Angeles, is set to conclude voting by Monday morning. Following the vote, each committee will count ballots for individual candidates and party lists. The results, along with voter registers and any submitted appeals, will be sent via diplomatic pouch to the foreign ministry. The ministry will then forward them to the central committee for overseas voting. This committee will compile a final report to be included in the national tally. Domestic voting is scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday, 4–5 August, according to the National Elections Authority (NEA). Results from the first round are expected to be announced on 12 August. The Senate, Egypt's upper chamber of parliament, serves a consultative role, with legislative authority residing in the House of Representatives. The 300-member Senate is composed of three equal parts: one-third elected via individual candidacy, one-third through closed party lists, and one-third appointed by the president. Women must hold at least 10 percent of the seats. Members serve five-year terms. In the individual seat system, a candidate must secure an absolute majority of valid votes to win. If no candidate achieves this, a runoff is held between the top two contenders. For list-based elections, the winning list must also secure an absolute majority. If this is not achieved, a runoff is held between the top two lists, with the one receiving the most valid votes winning. In the case of a single-candidate list, such as the National Unified List in this election, that list must obtain at least five percent of registered votes in its constituency to win. If a runoff is required, campaigning will resume on the same day the first-round results are announced, the NEA said. Appeals against the NEA's decision must be filed within 48 hours, with the final deadline on 14 August. Runoff voting for expats is scheduled for 25–26 August, followed by domestic runoff voting on 27–28 August. Final results from the runoff round are expected to be announced on 4 September. .
