Messi double as Miami bounce back against Red Bulls - World

Al-Ahram Weekly3 days ago
Lionel Messi rediscovered his scoring touch with two goals as Inter Miami bounced back from defeat to complete a 5-1 drubbing of the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer on Saturday.
Messi's red-hot season was rocked on Wednesday as Miami stumbled to a 3-0 defeat against FC Cincinnati.
But the Argentinian superstar was back to his inspired best as Miami turned on the style at the Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey to record an emphatic victory.
The Red Bulls had threatened to deliver another upset after Alexander Hack bundled home a 14th-minute opener to fire the hosts into an early lead.
But Messi swiftly orchestrated Inter Miami's recovery from that setback, providing a sublime pass to set up former Barcelona team-mate Jordi Alba's equaliser in the 24th minute.
Messi then combined with Alba for Miami's second goal, producing another brilliant pass to pick out the Spaniard, who crossed for Telasco Segovia to prod home on 27 minutes.
Segovia then swept in his second of the night deep into first-half stoppage time to leave Miami firmly in control.
Messi then took over in the second half as Miami cut loose.
A majestic through ball by another former Barcelona team-mate, Sergio Busquets, sent the Argentine World Cup-winner racing through on goal in the 60th minute.
Messi took his time and coolly feinted to wrongfoot Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel before tucking away the finish for 4-1.
Another Barcelona old boys combination delivered Messi's second. Luis Suarez crossed from the left and Messi controlled on the edge of the six-yard box to send a thumping finish past Coronel.

Pyramids FC winger Ibrahim Adel joins UAE side Al-Jazira - Egyptian Football

Egyptian international winger Ibrahim Adel joined UAE Pro League side Al-Jazira from Pyramids FC, the Emirati club announced on Tuesday. Al-Jazira welcomed the 24-year-old winger with a video posted on their official social media accounts, stating, 'From Cairo to Abu Dhabi. We introduce the new pride of Abu Dhabi, Ibrahim Adel.' Although the Emirati club have not revealed the details of the deal, reports claim that Adel signed a five-year deal for a fee of around $5 million. Adel will join compatriot Mohamed Elneny, who also plays the Emirati club since the summer of 2024 following the expiration of his contract with Premier League giants Arsenal. من القاهرة إلى أبو ظبي ✈️ الجزراوية الأعزاء، نقدم لكم نجم #فخر_أبوظبي الجديد 🥁 إبراهيم عادل 🤍🖤#نادي_الجزيرة — نادي الجزيرة (@aljazirafc) July 22, 2025 The classy winger came close to a switch to Europe last year, undergoing a medical with La Liga outfit Getafe before the deal collapsed at the last minute. Nonetheless, Adel enjoyed a stellar season with Pyramids FC, netting 15 goals and providing 12 assists in 35 appearances. Since arriving from Port Said second tier Al-Merrikh in 2020, he has scored 48 goals and registered 23 assists across 169 games for the Egyptian side. During his tenure, Adel played a pivotal role in securing Pyramids' first-ever Egypt Cup and CAF Champions League titles in consecutive seasons. On the international stage, Adel has earned 14 senior caps and scored twice for the Pharaohs, most memorably a spectacular long-range strike against Mauritania that sealed Egypt's place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He also featured at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, scoring three goals in the latter tournament. Al-Jazira finished seventh in the 2023-24 UAE Pro League with 37 points but claimed the UAE League Cup. Athletic Bilbao beat Atletico Madrid to Areso signing - World

Athletic Bilbao signed Osasuna right-back Jesus Areso on Tuesday despite reports Atletico Madrid had agreed a deal for the Spaniard. "Athletic and Osasuna have reached a deal for the transfer of the full-back Jesus Areso, who signs for the red-and-whites until June 30, 2031," said Athletic in a statement. Areso, 26, played for Athletic's reserve side until 2021, when he joined Osasuna, and his return cost the Basque side up to 12 million euros ($14 million), according to Spanish reports. Tennis: French Open sensation Boisson withdraws injured from Montreal - Omni sports

Roland Garros semi-finalist Lois Boisson announced Tuesday her withdrawal from the WTA 1000 event in Montreal due to a left adductor muscle injury, as the list of high-profile absentees from the Canadian Open continues to grow. "I (did) an echography this morning following the pain that I had on my left adductor during the tournament in Hamburg and it appears that I need a little bit more time to rest and heal it properly," world number 44 Boisson posted on social media. "I am very disappointed to miss the @obnmontreal... It was not an easy decision but I always put my health as a priority." The injury blow comes days after the 22-year-old backed up her performances at last month's French Open by winning her first tour-level event on the clay in Hamburg and breaking into the world's top 50. Ranked 361st in the world before Roland Garros, Boisson created a sensation by reaching the semi-finals of the Grand Slam tournament, beating top 10 players Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva in the process. The Canadian Open has already seen a raft of big names withdraw from the women's and men's draws. Aryna Sabalenka and Zheng Qinwen will both miss the WTA event in Montreal, while Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will not be in ATP action in Toronto. The Montreal tournament runs from July 27-August 7, and is one of the principal warm-up events ahead of the US Open on the hard courts of New York at the end of the summer.
